Eddie Ate Dynamite - Jason Vivone and the Billy Bats - New Release review

Image
I just received the newest release, Eddie Ate Dynamite (January 28, 2014) from Jason Vivone and the Billy Bat s and it's a modern Louis Jordan with a twist. Opening with Cut Those Apron Strings , Vivone lets off a full swing number featuring bopping backing vocals from Paula Crawford and Joanna Berkebile as well as Bryan Redmond on sax and Chad Boydston on trumpet. Placebo has an unusual beat and a composition that is a part Zappa, part Little Feat and part Captain Beefhart with particularly cool slide work from Vivone and bass from Jeremy Clark. Mean opens with a haunting vocal lead from Crawford. BB King like blues riffs permeate the trance like melody and Matt Bustamante keeps it tight on drums. Title track, Eddie Ate Dynamite is a loose slide guitar led track with swing like rhythm. It's obvious that this band is serious but their music is intended to be a lot of fun. Analog has a standard blues style and turnaround but is very simple format with vocal, bass and drum...

Driving Wheel - Foghat

Image
Foghat is a British rock band that had their peak success in the 1970s. Their style can be described as "blues-rock" or boogie-rock, dominated by electric and electric slide guitar. The band has achieved 8 gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record. The band had far more success in the United States than home in Britain. Rod Price on guitar/slide guitar joined after he left the Black Cat Bones in December 1970. The new lineup was named "Foghat" (a nonsense word from a childhood game played by Peverett and his brother) in January 1971. Their 1972 album, Foghat was produced by Dave Edmunds and had a cover of Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You", which received much airplay, especially on FM stations. The band's second self-titled album was also known as Rock and Roll for its cover photo of a rock and a bread roll, and it went gold. Energized came out in 1974, followed by Rock and Roll Outlaws and Fool for the City in 1975...

Voodoo Child - Hunter & the Dirty Jacks

Image
Hunter & The Dirty Jacks are a very entertaining and versatile rock & roll band from Los Angeles, California. Blues and roots rock with a vintage sound and modern edge… originals, covers, full electric and rocked to the roof on Sunset Blvd., or all acoustic in a serene setting… both have been done to extreme success. Hunter & The Dirty Jacks comprise a virtual all-star cast of Los Angeles and Orange County-area musicians that have been playing locally and regionally for over ten years apiece. Fronted by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Hunter Ackerman, and anchored by Jon Siembieda and Carmelo Bonaventura on guitar, Aaron Barnes on bass, and Brian Lara on drums, the Dirty Jacks put forth an extremely high energy, emotionally compelling performance coupled with a rare combination of soulful originals and tasty covers. The sound is rock and roll with a bluesy core, ala the Black Keys, Rolling Stones, Black Crowes, and Jet. The band is very seasoned for all players bei...

Brian Cober - Austin Wired - New Release review

Image
I just received the newest release, Austin Wired (February 11, 2014)from Brian Cober and it is quite different. From uptempo country to blues and Latin, this is a cool release. Opening with country style rocker, What Will Come , Cober leads his trio of mates into a rabel rousing rukus of sliding fun. Robert Johnson's Preachin' The Blues is given the hard driving beat with train like percussion provided by Tom Lewis. Cober isn't shy to show he knows his way around the slide and this is a super track with plenty of action. I'm A Bluesman Baby has an unusual rhythm pattern and a catchy melody making it a good possible for radio play. Clever use of slide against a subdued rhythm is the key to this track. Woulda Coulda Shoulda has a springy pop sound but evolves into a slow blues like interlude with Big Ben Richardson on bass and Cober on slide doing some innovative stuff. Cool. Nuestro Viento is a spanish style track with a haunting melody. With only simple backing...

Blind Pig Artist: Damon Fowler - Sounds Of Home - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release (January 21, 2014) Sounds Of Home , from Damon Fowler and it's really super. Opening with a swamp funky blues, Thought I Had It All , with fat but fleet slide riffs Fowler shows beef on the strings  and Chuck Riley reinforces the meat on bass. James McKnight is tight on drums and Fowler is off to a great start with a cool melody and strong vocals. Nice! Title track, Sounds Of Home , is a blues rocker with a fairly sterile vocal lead but a kick butt guitar riff in contrast. Interesting. Trouble has a R&B/jazz feel to it. Laid back and snappy, Fowler does it easy with short bursts of guitar riffs. Quite cool. Spark is a country rocker with a catchy melody. Authentic telecountry riffs float the track and Eagles like vocal harmonies make it a solid radio number. Old Fools, Bar Stools and Me just smells like an old dive bar... I mean I can smell the tube amp that Fowler is driving to tube distortion (Think Hot Blue and Righteous). This is ce...

An Eye for an Eye - JOHN MAYALL'S BLUESBREAKERS featuring Mick Taylor & John McVie

Image
A six-piece lineup—consisting of Mayall, Mick Taylor as lead guitarist, John McVie still on bass, Hughie Flint or Hartley on drums, and Rip Kant and Chris Mercer on saxophones—recorded the album Crusade on 11 and 12 July 1967. These Bluesbreakers spent most of the year touring abroad, and Mayall taped the shows on a portable recorder. At the end of the tour, he had over sixty hours of tapes, which he edited into an album in two volumes: Diary of a Band, Vols. 1 & 2, released in February 1968. Meanwhile, a few lineup changes had occurred: McVie had departed and was replaced by Paul Williams, who himself soon quit to join Alan Price and was replaced by Keith Tillman; Dick Heckstall-Smith had taken the sax spot. Following a U.S. tour, there were more lineup changes, starting with the troublesome bass position. First Mayall replaced bassist Tillman with 15-year-old Andy Fraser. Within six weeks, though, Fraser left to join Free and was replaced by Tony Reeves, previously a member of...

James Armstrong Talks to Guitar Angels on New Catfood Records CD, Coming February 8 Follow-Up to His Critically-Acclaimed Label Debut Is His Most-Personal Album to-Date EL PASO, TX – Catfood Records announces a February 18 release date for Guitar Angels , the latest album from contemporary blues singer/guitarist James Armstrong, and follow-up to his acclaimed label debut, Blues at the Border . “This new CD bears the stamp of James Armstrong throughout, along with the assistance of his good friend, Michael Ross, as producer,” says Catfood Records head Bob Trenchard. “Various musicians were used in the making of the album and it was recorded at three different studios, but the common thread is James Armstrong’s unique talent on every song. He is a true original in his songwriting, guitar playing and vocals.” The nine original songs on Guitar Angels are bolstered by the inclusion of two stellar covers: a wonderful re-working of the Eagles hit, ...

Blind Pig Records artist: Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues - Blues Shock - New release review

Image
I just received the newest release, Blues Shock , from Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues and it's a real butt kicker. Opening with Sons of Blues , a blues/R&B/funk mixture, Branch has a modern sound with solid vocals and harp work. With horns blazing (The Chicago Horns featuring Bill McFarland on trombone, Hank Ford on sax and Kenny Anderson on trumpet) this track is made to get you on your feet. On Willie Dixon's Chicago boogie, Crazy Mixed Up World , Branch lays down some real nice harp riffs and Sumito Ariyoshi is tight on piano. Blues Shock is a blend of temtations and Charlie Daniels. Country soul? This would be the most practical radio track so far with a catchy melody and slide riffs from Dan Carelli. Branch gets loose on harp and Ariyoshi is chasing. Dog House is a cool slinky blues track. Both Branch and Ronnie Baker Brooks take the opportunity to lay down some great riffs on this track. Very nice. Function At The Junction has a strong R&B flavor and bac...

Show me the way - Dani Dorchin

Image
I am Dani Dorchin, an israeli musician and song writer, currently performing as a one man band, playing energetic, groovy, bluesy songs on guitar, harmonica and foot drums. My debut album, released January 2014, was recorded live in a studio in Tel Aviv in an attempt to capture the raw energy of a live show. No overdubs were used. All my favorite albums were recorded that way and this is my way of connecting to that tradition and to feel like I'm doing something real. I hope it works. The one man band project is my first solo effort, coming after years of playing harmonica with top Israeli acts, such as Asaf Avidan, Black Bruises, Lunacidal Tendencies and The Greenbaums, to name a few. Recently I have been honored to open for and play with blues greats Rev. KM Williams and LC Ulmer on their 2013 Israeli tours, an experience I have never even imagined possible when picking up guitar and harmonica in my mid twenties. Growing up on a kibbutz in northern Israel, a stone...

New Mike Bloomfield Multi-Disc Retrospective

Image
Mark Pucci Media              I was privileged to hear an advance of the wonderful new 3 CD/1 DVD Michael Bloomfield set, "From His Head to His Heart to His Hands," coming out Feb. 4 from Sony/Legacy Recordings. Lovingly produced by Mike's longtime friend & cohort, Al Koo per, this new set is a treasure trove of all the great Bloomfield music we remember, and a lot we've never heard before, including his "audition" for then-Columbia Records A&R head John Hammond Sr., plus many previously unreleased cuts, including a live track from the 1980 Bob Dylan concert in San Francisco. In between, there's all the great music Bloomfield gave us on his solo albums, with the Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, Super Sessions & tracks with Muddy Waters, Janis Joplin, etc. The DVD gives great insight into what made Bloomfield tick, and why he was so special. I got a chance to see/hear him play live ...

Sugar Brown - Sugar Brown's Sad Day - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release (March 4, 2014), Sugar Brown's Sad Day , from Sugar Brown and I really like it. Opening with Elmore James' Fishman's Blues , SB and Bharath Rajakumar on guitar capture a bit of the rawness of Hound Dog Taylor accompanied only by Ben Caissie on drums. Great opener! Next up is Bo Diddley based track, Before The Law . Featuring SB on vocal and guitar and Rajakumar on harp as well as Caissie on drums and maracas. Another original, Sad Day , sounds like it is out of the Morganfield soung book and solid down and dirty blues. With cool vocals and slide riffs from SB and tight harp work from Rajakumar this is a great track. With a solid Sonny Boy Williamson sound, Grim Reaper smells like Chicago. SB leads his troops like he was born in the back of a Southside bar and Rajakumar doesn't hold back on harp. Zak Izbinsky also adds guitar work on this track. Very cool! Jimmy Rogers track Act Like You Love Me has a great simple boogie beat and cl...

Ain't No Tellin - Tevis Hodge Jr.

Image
Born in Virginia, Tevis was exposed to Blues music at an early age. Due to his African-American heritage, and his love for the music, he is compelled to continue the traditions of his people. He has been playing music for 18 years and has played the blues for more than 10 years. Tevis is inspired to keep true to the traditions and techniques of the musicians of yesterday for an authentic experience, while at the same time accenting his own original flare and interpretations, placing himself among the many original blues musicians of the past 80 years. His songwriting coincides with the traditions of yesterday, which keeps an authentic flow from song to song, weather it be his own material, or an old traditional tune. This is where he shines as an artist, being more than a re-creator of the old, he is a contributor to the new in the vein of yesterday. Tevis Hodge Jr now resides in Portland, Oregon where he performs with various band configurations, and as a solo act in the Portland ar...

Crossroads Blues - Mississippi Marshall

Image
Mississippi Marshall was raised in the Mississippi Delta down around Sunflower and Bolivar County. His music roots date back to before he was a teenager traveling around the delta playing with his dad’s band. Marshall has since developed his own delta thumbing guitar style that is uniquely his own. When you hear it, you know it’s Mississippi Marshall. His songwriting and vocal styling is reminiscent of the seasoned bluesmen who influenced him from a young age.   If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, -  ”LIKE” ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! I’m looking for great talent and trying to grow the audience for your favorite band!

Black Hen Music artist: Steve Dawson - Rattlesnake Cage - New Release Review

Image
I have just received the newest release, Rattlesnake Cage , by Steve Dawson and it's excellent! Opening with Blind Thomas At The Crime Scene Dawson wastes no time showing that clean finger picked acoustic music without a lot of showboating is alive and well. If you like Leo Kottke or Gary Davis, you're bound to appreciate this first number. Excellent! Flophouse Oratory is a fast paced country style blues track on slide acoustic guitar reminiscent again of Kottke. I really like this track and it's clean excellent execution. The Medicine Show Comes To Avalon , a cool rag trck with a carousel melody is very sweet and well executed. Swapping over to resonator for Rattlesnake Cage, Dawson retains his finger picking rudiment but is more aggressive as demanded by the instrument and adds a very nice sliding component. Lighthouse Avenue I believe is played on a (Michael Dunn) Weissenborn ... and a sweet melody through such a warm instrument with beautiful harmonics. Butterfly...
