Rare Robert Johnson Recording Uncovered Robert Johnson  PITTSBURGH (AP) - A record store owner has found what he calls "the holy grail of 78s" in a box of old albums he picked up for $50. Jerry Weber said he discovered a copy of the second song ever recorded by Mississippi blues legend Robert Johnson, "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom," put to disc two years before Johnson's mysterious death in 1938 at age 27. The rarity, whose value Weber pegged at $6,000 to $12,000, was tucked in a collection of otherwise worthless, water-damaged old platters that sat in a hallway at Jerry's Records for days before anyone looked at them. "I saw one 30 years ago that was broke," Weber told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "and I saw one that a friend of mine found and let me hold before he sold it. Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) was an American blues singer and musician. His landmark recordings from 1936–37 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that have influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend, including a Faustian myth. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson enjoyed little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. His records sold poorly during his lifetime, and it was only after the first reissue of his recordings on LP in 1961 that his work reached a wider audience. Johnson is now recognized as a master of the blues, particularly of the Mississippi Delta blues style. In 1936, blues man Robert Johnson recorded a series of songs for a wad of cash -- with no residuals and no ownership of the recordings. Johnson's music has inspired rock and blues musicians ever since. A new short film dramatic film re-imagines this moment at the rock bottom of the Great Depression, when a down-and-out record man discovers an unknown young blues musician. Crossing dangerous race lines, they forge an uneasy alliance which changes both their lives forever. This project grew from a seed of generosity, when award-winning playwright Willy Holtzman gave actor/director Robert Brink the adaptation rights to his play, San Antonio Sunset. After several screenplay drafts with co-writer Talvin Wilks, Brink shot test footage of the action with different actors.
