I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

MC Records artist: The Lee Boys - Live On The East Coast - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live On The East Coast, from the Lee Boys and it's terrific! Opening with funk laden spiritual track, In The Morning, Derrick and Keith Lee on lead vocal, Alvin Lee on guitar, Chris Johnson on screaming pedal steel, Alvin Cordy Jr, on funky bass and Earl Walker on drums. Excellent opener! On blues shuffle, Don't Let The Devil Ride, the band really gets humming with Johnson really winding it up. This band is tight. On classic R&B track, I'll Take You There, Derrick and Keith really get into a nice groove with a solid bottom by Cordy who also takes a nice walk of his own, leading to an extended guitar jam. Very nice. Alvin lays in some real nice riffs under the nicely harmonizing vocals of Derrick and Keith. Rick Lollar on lead guitar gives Testify a little smoke over a simmering hot vocal lead and driving bass runs of Cordy and of course the ever present pedal soloing of Johnson. Very cool! Wrapping the release is blues classic, You Got To Move done with strong gospel lines over a rock beat. Derrick and Keith sing in harmony and with a driving beat and with a flurry of guitar by Alvin and the addition of Isaac Corbett on harmonica this is a solid closer for a super release.

M.C. Records artists: Guy Davis & Fabrizio Poggi - Sonny & Brownie's Last Train - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sonny & Brownie's Last Train, by Guy Davis &  Fabrizio Poggi. This is a full helping of traditional style acoustic blues featuring Guy Davis on vocal and guitar and Fabrizio Poggi on harmonica. Opening with the Davis penned title track, Sonny & Brownie's Last Train, Davis sets a snappy guitar rhythm, singing and accompanying himself on guitar. On Robert Pete Williams' Louise Louise, Guy slips into Williams' shoes and sings one of my favorite tracks on the release, with underlying harp and guitar. Very nice. On Sonny Terry classic, Hooray Hooray These Women Is Killing Me, Davis really captures the spirit of Sonny with his enthusiasm and Poggi's soulful harp.  On Big Joe Williams' Baby Please Don't Go Back To New Orleans, Davis really digs in for a super guitar intro and Davis and Poggi's work are tops.  On Elizabeth Cotten's Freight Train, Davis and Poggi stay with the theme of this release performing a tight rendition of Cotten's trademark tune. On Brownie McGee original, Evil Hearted Me, Davis delivers on vocal and Poggi harp  for another of my favorites on the release.  Written by Sonny, Brownie and Brownies wife Ruth, Walk On is Brownie and Ruth's tune and a perfect track to cement the cohesion of the pair. Wrapping the release  is Midnight Special, well known track performed by many performers. Davis's vocals and guitar is tight and Poggi's harp work is vibrant giving this track the perfect feel as a closer.

Tommy Malone's Texas Swing

Tommy Malone Ready To Rock Texas

Dates With Subdudes Coming Up

Northport N.Y. - Tommy Malone will be taking his trio will to Texas starting Thursday June 19. He'll make stops in San Antonio, Houston and Austin.  Also, Tommy Malone and the Subdudes will be on the east coast from June 25-28. Scroll down for the details.

On June 19 Tommy will pay a visit to KNBT in New Braunfels, TX. Look for his interview/performance to start at about 1PM Central Time. You can listen live right here; http://radionb.com/knbt

Did you get a chance to check out Tommy Malone on Mountain Stage last week with Keb Mo, Joan Osborne and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band? Well if you missed it or want to hear it again, you can by clicking the logo.

On April 29, M.C. Records released Tommy Malone's second solo effort for the label, Poor Boy.  Tommy co-produced the recording with his longtime musical friend Ray Ganucheau in New Orleans. Ray was the engineer for the Subdudes' "Primitive Streak" and Tommy's first solo recording, "Soul Heavy." You can listen to the new recording via Airplay Direct by clicking the cover.

We want to thank the 30 + stations who have added Poor Boy and the dozens more who are playing it. Currently it's No. 28 this week on The Americana Music Charts.  You can view the entire chart right here: http://www.americanaradio.org/ama/displaychart_beforetracks.asp?mode=lw&dtkey=

Tommy Malone's Poor Boy is the No. 4 album on this week on the Roots Music Reports Top 10 Roots Rock Albums.  Click the logo for more!

Tommy was on the Americana Music Show with Calvin Powers. Tommy Malone plays tracks from Poor Boy and talks about the Subdudes reunion, reading the Society Page, and how everyone has a Katrina story. Click the photo to hear the Podcast.

Poor Boy is getting serious reviews!

This third solo release and second on M.C. Records by Tommy Malone, front-man for the popular New Orleans bluesy-rock band, The Subdudes, offers a soothing, laid-back feel and a dash of Southern charm.
The Toledo Blade

"Poor Boy" mines the Americana vein with sophistication and grit. Its songs run the gamut from layered, Beatleish psych-pop to rock-infused soul, with a consistent thread of eloquent, gut-level storytelling skill.
The Times Picayune

What raises his personal bar on Poor Boy is the confident comfort that is a part of each track, and the album as a whole. The Alternate Root

Tommy Malone makes music that alternately soothes and fires up the soul. He’s always been able to do that, and it’s clear on Poor Boy that it’s become second nature for him. Something Else

With Poor Boy, Tommy Malone has released another album full of great songs complete with excellent guitar work and singing that should extend his stellar musical reputation beyond the cognoscenti and to the general public, where it deserves to be. OffBeat

You'll learn a lot about Tommy Malone s world after hearing his third, and arguably finest solo album, Poor Boy. Americana Boogie

Tommy Malone has a bunch of dates solo and with the Subdudes.

Tommy Malone is not only one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, he’s a superb guitarist and a magnificent vocalist who animates every corner of his compositions. Over the past 40 years Malone has been at the center of some of the most storied and often star-crossed bands in Louisiana history, beginning with the family band formed with two of his brothers, Dustwoofie. Malone went on to help develop the eccentric songwriters’ collective the Continental Drifters before becoming a charter member of the still-beloved subdudes. Along the way he played in the well regarded one-off groups Tiny Town and Monkey Ranch as well as in a duo with his older brother Dave from the Radiators, the Malone Brothers. Poor Boy marks the third solo recording in his storied career.
