Powertrain - Four Day Creep

Image
Powertrain effectively meshes the diverse influences of its members to create their unique blend of melodic metal, classic rock and power pop. The music stirs memories of the classic guitar and Hammond-driven hard rock of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, the airy prog of Pink Floyd, the 80’s power metal of Dio and Iron Maiden, or the modern feel and moodiness of Alice In Chains. Though their diverse rock sound is not easy to pigeonhole into any one genre, Powertrain is consistently defined by their strong musicianship and tight, melodic songwriting. Powertrain can trace its roots back to Heir Apparent’s European tour in the fall of 2006, which featured a touring lineup that included bassist Bobby Ferkovich, drummer Jeffrey McCormack, and Op Sakiya on keys. Shortly after that tour concluded, McCormack and Ferkovich joined Dead Prjct, a solo endeavor of Fifth Angel lead guitarist Kendall Bechtel. Dead Prjct proved to be short-lived however, and Ferkovich and Sakiya again banded together al...

The Way You Do - Josh Smith

Image
Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Before he was 1, his family relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. At age 3, he received his first guitar and at 6, he started taking guitar lessons. Josh was exposed to the blues at an early age. He listened to a variety of artists, such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and T-Bone Walker. He also started going to concerts, including the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. By 12, Josh was playing at established professional blues jams in South Florida, such as Musicians Exchange Café in Fort Lauderdale and Club M in Hollywood, FL. When Josh was 13, the Rhino Cats, house band at Club M, asked him to be the lead guitarist. Musicians Exchange owner Don Cohen was so taken aback by the talent of this young musician that he offered to help manage and develop Josh’s career. The Café was renowned for bringing in the best national touring blues bands...

"jass/blues" - Vince Maccarone's Los Variants - New Release review

Image
I just received the newest release, jass/blues , from Vince Maccarone's Los Variants and it's quite cool. Opening with Percy Mayfield's Stranger In My Own Home Town , drummer Maccarone puts a New Orleans type spin on the track with Latin rhythm and Paul Reddick on vocals and harp taking a nice lead line. Rob Gusevs also takes a really nice piano stretch on this track as well. On Stone Hooker , Claire Doyle has the mic and really adds a hot edge. Sean Pinchin smokes the strings of his resonator for a super display of fluid grease. Christopher Plock also adds some cool bari sax on the bottom. On Charles Brown's Black Night Is Falling , John Mays takes the mic and really lays down a nice track. Nicely articulated guitar work from Mike Branton is icing on the cake of this superbly executed classic also featuring smooth piano work again from Gusevs and horn work from Bill Prouten, Sean o'Conner and Neil Brathwaite. Maccarone pulls out a traditional western theme with ...

I Am The Blues - Michael Packer - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, I Am The Blues , from Michael Packer and it looks at the blues from a number of different angles. This release is a mixture of dialogue and related tracks composing a musical book. Opening with a dialogue, Packer sets the stage for a New York, almost Lou Reed style approach at the blues. Uncle M is a simple country style blues with vocals and acoustic guitar. A sound of having been there along with the perfect vocal backing makes this a pretty cool track. Bad Time Jackson is more of a swing style electric track. Addition of percussion, violin and keys show a different side of Packer with a good sense of construction. I Can't Keep From Crying is one of my favorite tracks from the 70's. Packer does an updated version of this track extending the rhythm structure and giving it more of a street sound. I'm In Love has a funky night sound with a super bass line. The harp work on this track is really quite clean and the vocal harmonies ar...

Blues Guitarist Dan McKinnon Releases New CD As Sharp As Possible

Image
Blues Guitarist Dan McKinnon Releases New CD As Sharp As Possible November 19, 2013          Mixing equal parts musical scholar, businessman and tattooed rock n’ roll rebel, Toronto guitarist Dan McKinnon is not your average bluesman. While his music is rooted in blues styles ranging from traditional, country and electric, McKinnon has also publicly declared his love for glam rock, fusion, hard bop, and heavy metal. It is this mélange of musical influences that has created the sound that McKinnon is known for and presents on his new CD As Sharp As Possible . His self-titled debut E.P. was released in early 2012 to glowing reviews and widespread airplay across North America - including regular positions on the Roots Music Report charts . “Dan McKinnon is certainly ready for the spotlight. His debut EP shines a light on the wide spectrum of sounds he can create. From the slow and soulful to the edgy solo...

Coventus, The Eye Of The Heart - Norine Braun - New Release Review - Ellis James, guest writer

Image
I just received the newest release, Coventus, The Eye Of The Heart , from Norine Braun . The opening track, Lightning Strikes Twice displays an nterplay between smooth guitar, keyboard and wonderfully comforting and well trained voice elicit memories and best relaxing elements of “It’s a Beautiful Day”, Brian Auger with restrained hints of Santana and touches of techno-digital drumming courtesy of Adam Popowitz result in a what I’d call background for the perfect love affair. On How Would We Know , a reggae beat mixed with an almost Smooth Jazz guitar foundation provide foundation for Braun’s voice and fun lyrics. Playful change-up in the pace makes this tune more fun than cruising in a convertible on an ideal first day of Spring. Dizzy is a pleasant up-tempo tune. What strikes me is that Ms. Braun’s voice is a comforting treat to the ear. This listener was naturally relaxed yet not bored while listening to this set of songs. Just as the listener can pigeon-hole the genre of thi...

Southern Hospitality - new video!

Image
NEW SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY VIDEO "Kind Lies & Whiskey" "Well, I've got scars, from cars, b ars and women. And I feel, Lord, I've earned them all." Great lyrics, from a great song, from a great band.  The song, "Kind Lies & Whiskey," exemplifies the compelling mix of Southern soul, rootsy rock, and swampy blues of Southern Hospitality that has critics comparing the group to the Allman Brothers, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker, Dr. John, and Willie Nelson. Led by a trio of young virtuosos - Damon Fowler (composer of "Kind Lies") on lap steel, JP Soars on guitar, and Victor Wainwright on keyboards - Southern Hospitality is taking the Americana and roots music world by storm with their "neo-postmodern Southern rock" with echoes of Muscle Shoals and Macon. Elmore magazine said of the tune, "Tracks like Fowler's 'Kind Lies & Whiskey' breathe new life into southern rock 4...
