I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Men Are Like Potato Chips, by Anni Piper and it's a solid blues rocker. Opening with Devil Bride, Brian Foxworth really set a solid drum rhythm giving Anni Piper on vocal and bass a great platform for her chugging rocker. Ted Swanson lays in some nicely stylized guitar work and Jimi Bott rounds out the band on percussion. Sassy, title track, Men Are Like Potato Chips, has a vintage blues style lead by Chris Shuttleworth on tuba and Steve Kerin on keys giving the full range to Piper on lead vocal. I do like Shuttleworth's tuba solo on this one. Cheetah, is my favorite track on the release is tasty guitar work by Swanson, and strong drum beat by Foxworth, John Dover contributing a tight trumpet lead and of course smooth lead vocal by Piper. Thunderous drums by Foxworth open Match With A Sasquatch rocking with Piper's vocals and Tim Langford and the track picks up a hot James Brown funky drum rhythm. Wrapping the release is driving rocker, F.I.G.J.A.M. featuring Annie and Flynn Piper on harmonized lead vocals and a jamming bottom courtesy Foxworth on drums and Swanson on guitars. Rocking closer.

The colorful
bassist-vocalist who fronts the Anni Piper Band released More Guitars
Than Friends to critical acclaim and worldwide airplay this past
February. The album features the hit single "Wonder Woman," nominated
for awards in both the U.S. and her country of origin, Australia, from
which she moved approximately two years ago. Recently married, Piper now
calls Cocoa, FL her home.
Some Recent Reviews of "More Guitars Than
Friends"
"An entertaining album with some fine comic songs, a
good vocalist, and solid musicianship."
BLUES BLAST
"A strong addition to Anni Piper’s catalog. Though a
departure from her more popular Texas Blues, and swing music that her
fans have come to expect, it is a good record that stands up well to
repeated listening. Piper's ability to write songs in genres other than
the blues has grown with each new release, as has the emotional maturity
of her singing."
"The sultry bass-playing blues-woman from Down Under
offers a wry line in her lyrical story-telling. Piper’s voice provides a
smooth and soulful feel, mixed up with a coquettish twinkle in “I’m Lost
Without You.” She gives a raucous earthy feel to “Paper Bag,” which
demonstrates her vocal dexterity, and has a great saxophone solo from
Charlie De Chant (Hall & Oates band)."
NATIONAL BLUES REVUE
"More Guitars Than Friends puts Piper’s
considerable musical talents and smart songwriting on full display....a
captivating mix of blues, rock and soul that features her deep and sultry
vocals and her formidable skills on the bass
guitar." BLUES BYTES
The ten-song disc, the first to be released on Piper's own
Sugar Daddy Records imprint, is a lively potpourri of sounds. "All
the original songs on the album were written since I moved to the US
about a year ago", states Piper. More Guitars Than Friends
was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Solar Studio (using exclusively
solar power) in Orlando, FL.
Anni Piper - often referred to as
"Australia's First Lady of the Blues" - blends deep, sexy
vocals with a high-energy bass playing style (often barefoot), making for
a thoroughly enjoyable live experience. Anni first started playing
electric guitar at age twelve, but switched to bass two years
later. In 2004 Piper released Jailbait, which earned her
"Best New Talent"at the 2005 Australian Blues Music Awards.
Subsequent album releases include 2007's Texas Hold 'Em, 2009's Two's
Company (which reached #1 on the Australian Roots music chart and #21
on the Living Blues chart), 2010's Chasin' Tail (released by Blues
Leaf Records), and 2013's Split Second, a duet effort with Nicole
Hart.

"MORE GUITARS THAN FRIENDS": MEDIA QUOTES
"The appeal of Piper’s music is not hard to find. Her
voice has a quality and attitude about it that exudes fun, something that
overflows on album spotlight track “Paper
Bag.” AXS.COM
"More Guitars Than Friends from Anni Piper may be her
best effort to date. Piper shows once again that she has the pipes for
the lead
vocalist".
BMANS BLUES REPORT
"Piper is a good songwriter...sensual vocals are
combined with Dave Kury’s rockin guitar. Anni Piper is difficult to
categorize but one thing is clear: She's a great
entertainer." MAKING A SCENE
"This collection of tracks features tongue in cheek
lyrics, a couple heartfelt blues tracks, and some cool rock-a-billy.
“Just A Little Bit” is another lyrical masterpiece that demonstrates how
well Piper can take her music seriously without forgetting to add a little
fun to music."
