Vizztone Label Group artist: Kevin Selfe - Buy My Soul Back - New release review

I just received the newest release, Buy My Soul Back, from Kevin Selfe and it really gets down. Opening with rockin' blues track, Picking Empty Pockets, Selfe leads the way on vocal and guitar. His clever turnaround riffs and wild solo is highlighted by a super sax solo by Peter Moss and supported by Allen Markel on bass, James Pace on organ, Steve Kerin on piano and Jimi Bott on drums. Great opener. Chicago style blues shuffle, Fixed It Til It's Broke, features Mitch Kashmar with some great harp work and a great bass lead by Willie J. Campbell. Title track, Buy My Soul Back, has a R&B feel with solid horn backing from Joe McCarthy on trumpet, Chris Mercer on tenor sax and Brad Ulrich on bari sax. Pace provides a nice bed of organ and Selfe handles the lead vocals nicely, backed by Lisa Mann and also lays in some really nicely styled guitar riffs giving the track a bit of a sting. Digging My Own Grave has a old blues feel with a grungy blues guitar riff under the driving vocal and drums. Selfe cuts loose with some tasty slide guitar riffs but still remains in the primitive blues style. Very nice. Bluesy ballad, All Partied Out, has definite radio clues with a catchy melody and solid horn backing. Selfe does cut loose with a real nice guitar stinger of a solo giving the track a definite tension. Very nice! Rocker, Keep Pushing Or Die Trying, is driven by Allen Markel on bass and features some real nice key work from Kerin on piano as well as a country influenced guitar solo by Selfe. Blues funk, Albert King style is up next on Bluesman Without The Blues. With funky guitar riffs and horns this track really moves. Selfe takes a real nice guitar lead in support to Sugaray Rayford on lead vocal. This is an excellent track and Bott really shines on this track. Every once in a while there is a track that I just don't like and this next one is it. I may be one of the only humans on the planet that doesn't love Bruce Springsteen but there it is. His I'm On Fire is next and Selfe does an interesting alteration to it making it sound a bit less processed and with harp compliments of Kashmar and the more country acoustic guitar treatment by Selfe, it has a less pop and more wholesome feel. Boogie track, Don't Tear Me Down, has a real nice upbeat accent giving it a bit of a lope. Gene Taylor's piano work nicely accents a really soulful sax solo. Keeping the track well grounded, Selfe lays in some stylized, double stop accented, guitar lines complimented by Mercer and Ulrich on sax. Very nice! Double Dipping has a easy country feel with country blues guitar riffs and simple backing by Campbell on bass, Taylor on piano,Bott on drums and Moss on Bari. Virginia Farm has a really basic rural blues feel with only Selfe accompanying his on vocal on acoustic slide guitar. Very cool! Texas style shuffle, Pig Pickin' is a particularly cool instrumental with Campbell on bass, Bott on drums, Pace on organ and Selfe on guitar. Almost breaking into a jazz feel Pace and Selfe each take nice solo's making this one of my favorite tracks on the release. Wrapping the release is Starting Up At The Bottom, a revival style track featuring Selfe on lead vocal and guitar, Kerin on piano, Markel on bass and Bott on drums. Pace takes a cool organ solo and Lisa Mann's backing vocals add substantially to the overall spiritual feel of the track. Great closer.

Cascade Blues Association Hall

Blues Blast
Award Nominee

Kevin Selfe has cemented his reputation as a masterful, dyed-through, true bluesman with his new release, Buy My Soul Back on the VizzTone Label.  This latest collection of songs reveals an unwavering dedication to the traditional blues school, and yields yet another deft homage to empty wallets, ne-er-do-wells, and the enduring theme of love's rapid melt. Selfe's transformation into a leading voice on the American blues scene was realized after landing on the Billboard and Living Blues Charts with his 2013 release, Long Walk Home.

Oft lauded for a traditional melodic sensibility broadcast through razor sharp guitar, Selfe's songwriting awakens, revealing an enriched sense of story telling, autobiography, and revelation.   Audiences from Virginia to Oregon, Selfe's former and current homes, thrill at his commitment to the role of high octane blues entertainer on the live stage -- where this new companion of songs was inspired, refined, and perfected.  Selfe's shows are part blues revival, part force of nature.

The list of blues stalwarts joining Selfe on Buy My Soul Back reads like a contemporary blues primer:  Sugaray Rayford, Jimi Bott, Mitch Kashmar, Lisa Mann, Gene Taylor, James Pace, Willie J. Campbell and host of others.  All combine to join forces with Selfe in a rich tapestry of traditional grooves seemingly forged in the speak-easies of mid-century Chicago, the Mississippi Delta, and rural Texas.  The tributes are authentic.  The energy is palpable.  The musicianship is extraordinary.  True blues fans will rejoice.

KEVIN SELFE "LONG WALK HOME" In a world of teenage guitar prodigies, Kevin Selfe learned to play the guitar at a relatively late age while studying Meteorology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. "I had plenty of time to practice in my dorm room," Kevin explains, "because my major was not real popular with the ladies." His roommate – who also played bass - introduced Kevin to this whole new world of music that he wasn't aware of. While everybody else was into the grunge thing, Selfe was listening to Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Elmore James. It was like this big light suddenly went on in his head. After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Meteorology in 1995, Selfe felt like there was something missing, something else calling him. It was then that he decided to abandon a potential career as a weatherman, and pursue the music that now consumed his soul, the blues.
In 1997 at the age of 23, Selfe joined the regionally popular Fat Daddy Band based out of his hometown of Roanoke, VA. During his tenure with them, the band won the Charlotte Blues Society's 2001 Talent Competition and was a finalist at the Blues Foundation's 2002 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. After spending 6 busy years touring the South and recording 3 CDs, Kevin left Fat Daddy and joined forces with fellow Virginia bluesman Rodger Crowder, forming Little Rodger and the Cheap Thrills in 2003. Over the next 2 years Kevin continued touring, regularly performing at some of the nation's best blues clubs. In early 2005, Kevin decided it was time to pursue a solo career and formed his own group, Kevin Selfe and The Tornadoes. The band quickly became known as one of the tightest and most energetic blues outfits around. Selfe relocated to the blues hotbed of Portland, OR in February 2007 and assembled a West Coast version of The Tornadoes.
In five short years Kevin Selfe and The Tornadoes have become a Northwest favorite, having been inducted into the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame in late 2012, as well as becoming an eight-time Muddy Awards recipient, including prestigious awards for Traditional Blues Act of the Year (2012, 2011, 2010) and Contemporary Blues Act of The Year (2009). In early 2011, the band welcomed legendary blues drummer and 14-time Blues Music Award nominee Jimi Bott, whose own home studio was utilized for Selfe's Delta Groove debut. "Long Walk Home" features 11 original compositions demonstrating Selfe's musical depth and diversity with forays into West Coast, Texas, Chicago and Delta blues, along with top-notch support by veteran blues and roots musicians including Delta Groove labelmate Mitch Kashmar on vocals and harmonica, Gene Taylor (The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Blasters) on piano, Allen Markel (The Insomniacs) on bass, Jimi Bott (Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, The Mannish Boys) on drums, and Doug James (Roomful of Blues, Jimmie Vaughan) on baritone sax.

"Selfe plays with rare thoughtfulness and taste…his clean tone and deep well of approaches keep things fresh." - Blues Revue Magazine
"They have originality of lyrics, individuality of playing their chosen instruments and a collective output which ranks at the best of the modern era in blues" - Blues Matters Magazine
"Kevin draws the crowds to the band with fiery fretwork that gets
"wanna-be" guitar heroes excited and professionals listening closely."

– Greg Johnson, President, Cascade Blues Association

Delta Groove Music artist: Kevin Selfe - Long Walk Home - New Release Review

I just received a copy of soon to be released (February 19, 2013 on Delta Groove Records) Long Walk Home by Kevin Selve. This is a really cool release with a variety of blues styles covered. The release opens with Duct Tape On My Soul, a nice loping blues track with plenty of T-Bone Walker influenced guitar riffs. Selfe takes advantage of this rhythm and lays down some really sweet solos. Mama Didn't Raise No Fool gets a bit more of a Chicago tempo featuring Mitch Kashmar on harp as well as stinging fretwork from Selfe. Selfe also has a hot voice for this style of music and blends nicely with his band. One of my favorites on the release, Moving Day Blues, has a slow T-Bone walker style setup with piano by Gene Taylor and great horn work by Joe McCarthy (trumpet), Chris Mercer (Tenor Sax), Brad Ulrich (Bari sax) and particularly hot riffs from Selfe.... dig those double stops, hot off tempo riffs and soulful bends. Smokin!!!! Last Crossroad is a lighter acoustic style blues with a running rhythm and slide. Dancing Girl opens with a ZZ Top riff and then opens into a very traditional sounding Chicago stye blues track. This is a really strong track. I particularly like Selfe's guitar work on this track. He has a strong style of his own and his solos are intense and provoking. Midnight Creeper opens with some nice open tuned slide work. Developing into a rocking blues track Selfe continues to show the diversity of his songwriting. Walking Funny is a fast "jump" blues again backed by Jimi Bott on drums who adds a specific brightness. Taylor again on piano and the horn section really drive Selfe on classic jump blues riffs. This is a hot track! Second Box On The Left, a loping blues track, opens with with sweet guitar riffs and again allows plenty of space for smooth vocals and guitar by Selfe but also features some nice horn backing and soloing. Put Me Back In Jail is a slide "free for all" along the lines of Hound Dog Taylor. Overall this is a really strong recording and one that I'm certain will be well received.

DELTA GROOVE “BLUES STIMULUS PROGRAM” WINNERS!

DELTA GROOVE “BLUES STIMULUS PROGRAM” WINNERS!
Delta Groove Music is very pleased to announce the participants in their first annual Blues Stimulus Program, an opportunity for blues talent around the world to become members of the successful Delta Groove Family.  Over the last decade, Delta Groove Music has set the new standard for producing, promoting, and booking exciting blues and roots music talent.  Now they’re sharing in their success by inviting emerging blues acts to submit their recordings for review, and each year Delta Groove will choose two U.S. and one foreign blues act to come on board with one of the biggest success stories in blues in this millennium!

After much careful review and painstaking consideration over the last several months, the producers and talent scouts at Delta Groove have chosen the Nashville-based Andy T and Nick Nixon Band, and Portland, Oregon’s Kevin Selfe as this year’s U.S. participants in the Blues Stimulus Program.

Guitarist Andy T and singer/guitarist Nixon are both veteran blues players who enjoyed long and successful careers on their own for years before joining forces to create one of the most dynamic and soulful blues bands in Nashville – a town with no shortage of great musicians.  Andy T’s fiery yet tasteful guitar provides the perfect backdrop to Nixon’s deeply bluesy, church-schooled vocals, an appealing combination that caught the attention of Texas blues guitar legend Anson Funderburgh, who produced and guests on their debut CD for Delta Groove.

Virginia native Kevin Selfe is one of the most exciting and tasteful young blues guitarists and singers on the scene today, with that golden combination of reverence for the masters and the fire and passion of an artist from a new generation, out to write his own chapter in the blues history books.  Selfe has been on the scene since 1997, and appeared on numerous CDs with The Fat Daddy Band and Little Roger and The Cheap Thrills.  In 2005 he formed Kevin Selfe & The Tornadoes in his native Roanoke, VA, eventually relocating to the other side of the country in Portland, OR.  Since then he’s continued to hone and perfect his own unique sound, using his mastery of traditional blues as a springboard into his own exciting blend of cutting edge attitude and original songs that speak to several generations of roots music and blues fans.

The debut CDs on Delta Groove by Andy T - Nick Nixon Band “Drink Drank Drunk”, and Kevin Selfe “Long Walk Home”, are scheduled for release by Delta Groove in February of 2013.
