How Does It Feel - D'Angelo

Image
Michael Eugene Archer (born February 11, 1974), better known by his stage name D'Angelo, is an American R&B and neo soul singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is known for his production and songwriting talents as much as for his vocal abilities, and often draws comparisons to his influences, Marvin Gaye, and Prince. D'Angelo was one of the most influential artists during the rise of the neo-soul movement. D'Angelo was born Michael Eugene Archer, in Richmond, Virginia on February 11, 1974, to a Pentecostal preacher father, and a mother he described as "powerful." He was raised in an entirely Pentecostal family. Strict, they forbade interaction with other church members. His time deep within Pentecostalism left Archer with several notable memories, including seeing his 9-year-old-brother catch the Holy Ghost. He would later recall one of his memories as a 12-year-old: "I saw this one lady, she used to catch demons. She used t...

Baby Don't You Know - Roy Milton

Image
Roy Milton (July 31, 1907 – September 18, 1983) was an American R&B singer, drummer and bandleader. Milton's grandmother was a Chickasaw. He was born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma and grew up on an Indian reservation before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He joined the Ernie Fields band in the late 1920s as singer and, later, drummer. Moving to Los Angeles, California in 1933, he formed his own band, the Solid Senders, with Camille Howard on piano. He performed in local clubs and began recording in the 1940s, his first release being "Milton's Boogie" on his own record label. His big break came in 1946, when his "R. M. Blues", on the new Juke Box label, became a hit, reaching # 2 on the Billboard R&B chart and #20 on the pop chart. Its success helped establish Art Rupe’s company, which he shortly afterwards renamed Specialty Records. Milton and his band became a major touring attraction, and he continued to record successfully for Specialty Records through the la...

Blues Deluxe - Joe Bonamassa

Image
I believe that this song was written by Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart. It was on Jeff's first release, "Truth" and it's a killer song. Nice job by Joe here! Joe Bonamassa (born May 8, 1977 in New York, USA) is an American blues rock guitarist and singer. Unlike other successful blues-rock guitarists, Bonamassa has cited his influences as being British and Irish blues acts, rather than American acts. Within the blues genre, hearing the traditional blues players, as with Guitar Slim, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and all the traditional American blues players, (with the exception of B.B. King), comparing the music in the United States to the "European" versions of the blues, Bonamassa found the English blues, fostered by notable musicians such as the Jeff Beck Group, Eric Clapton, and the Irish blues player Rory Gallagher to be far more interesting to him than the original Delta blues players.[1] In an interview in Guitarist magazine (issue 265), he cited the thre...

Stop and Listen Blues - Sam Chatmon

Image
Sam Chatmon (January 10, 1897 - February 2, 1983) was a Delta blues guitarist and singer. He was a member of the Mississippi Sheiks and may have been Charlie Patton's half brother. Chatmon was born in Bolton, Mississippi. Chatmon's family was well-known in Mississippi for their musical talents; Chatmon was a member of the family's string band when he was young. He performed on a regular basis for white audiences in the 1900s. The Chatmon band played rags, ballads, and popular dance tunes. Two of Sam's brothers, fiddler Lonnie Chatmon and guitarist Bo Carter, performed with guitarist Walter Vinson as the Mississippi Sheiks. Chatmon played the banjo, mandolin, and harmonica in addition to the guitar. He performed at parties and on street corners throughout Mississippi for small pay and tips. In the 1930s he recorded both with the Sheiks, as well as with sibling Lonnie as the Chatman Brothers. Chatmon moved to Hollandale, Mississippi in the early 1940s and worked on planta...

I'm Gonna Live Anyhow Until I Die (1959) - Alan Lomax

Image
Miles Pratcher, vocal and guitar; Bob Pratcher, fiddle. Recorded by Alan Lomax in Como, Mississippi. September 22, 1959. From "I'm Gonna Live Anyhow Until I Die," one of five albums commemorating the 50th anniversary of Lomax's "Southern Journey" field recording trip. Released in 2011 digitally by Global Jukebox (GJ 1005) and on LP by Mississippi Records (MR 065). The Pratcher brothers were neighbors of bluesman Fred McDowell in Como, and also farmers, but were of an earlier musical generation. Miles and Bob were repositories of the raggy country dance music that would have been heard at picnics and other social occasions in the fin-de-siecle Mississippi Hill Country. Lomax wrote of this performance in 1978 that he "always thought of this genre as a bluesy ballad in ragtime," lying chronologically and stylistically "between black square dance music and the first true instrumental blues." "I'm Going to Live Anyhow Until I Die...

First Time I Met The Blues - Buddy Guy

Image
Born and raised in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Guy began learning guitar on a two string diddley bow he made. Later he was given a Harmony acoustic guitar, which, decades later in Guy's lengthy career was donated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the early '50s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of Muddy Waters. In 1958, a competition with West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush gave Guy a record contract. Soon afterwards he recorded for Cobra Records. He recorded sessions with Junior Wells for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. Guy’s early career was supposedly held back by both conservative business choices made by his record company (Chess Records) and "the scorn, diminishments and petty subterfuge from a few jealous rivals"[citation needed]. Chess, Guy’s record label from 1959 to 1968, refused to record Buddy Guy’s novel style that was similar to ...

Tribute to Elmore - Sunnyland Slim & Eddie Taylor

Image
Eddie Taylor (January 29, 1923 – December 25, 1985) was an American blues guitarist and singer. Born Edward Taylor in Benoit, Mississippi, as a boy Taylor taught himself to play the guitar. He spent his early years playing at venues around Leland, Mississippi, where he taught his friend Jimmy Reed to play guitar. With a guitar style deeply rooted in the Mississippi Delta tradition, in 1949 Taylor moved to Chicago. While Taylor never achieved the stardom of some of his compatriots in the Chicago Blues scene, he nevertheless was an integral part of that era and is especially noted as a main accompanist for Jimmy Reed as well as working with John Lee Hooker, Big Walter Horton and others. Taylor's own records "Big Town Playboy" and "Bad Boy" on Vee Jay Records became local hits in the 1950s. Taylor's son Eddie Taylor Jr. is a blues guitarist in Chicago, his stepson Larry Taylor is a blues drummer and vocalist, and his daughter Demetria is a blues vocalist in Chi...

Low Down Dirty Blues - Big James Montgomery

Image
The Chicago Playboys first saw the light of day as the back-up band for Chicago blues and soul singer Little Johnny Christian, and the name has been carried forward by two of his former brass men who came together with other like-minded and talented musicians to create a unique Chicago-rooted, horn-heavy sound. The Playboys have now developed into a disciplined unit that is drawing comparisons to James Brown's former rhythm-intensive backing band, and are tearing up packed houses at home and across both seas. They continue to put the Chicago Playboys' name up on some of the biggest marquees and festival stages in the world. Big James Montgomery and Charlie Kimble first teamed up around 1990 and accompanied Johnny Christian throughout the early 1990s and backed him on his 1993 recording on the Big Boy label. "Little Milton gave me my start," recalls trombonist Montgomery, who served two years with the legendary Milton and then a stint in the band of singular guitar ...

Tech Talk - Traynor YBA 1

Image
One of my personal favorites... of course I have one! Dual pairs of inputs, dual volume controls, bass, treble, high and low (mid) range expanders, also good for guitar - tubes were 2 6CA7 outputs and three 12AX7A's in the preamp (early models had 7027A o/ps and a 5AR4 rectifier). Originally named "Dynabass" (1963-64), this was Pete Traynor's first amp design. Bass Masters were often used for guitar and worked very well in that role. Later, the basic electronics would be incorporated into several of Yorkville's Traynor products. Power 45 Watts Sine Wave @ 8 Ohms

The Rooftop Recordings - David Philips - New release review

Image
I just completed a few listens of the new David Philips recording. The recording is focused and quiet. Grab a cup of coffee, a news paper and enjoy a quiet day. David Philips lives in a roof top apartment at the top of a block of flats in Barcelona, Spain. When it came time to record these songs, he decided to record at home. He set up a few mics in the room that leads on to the same roof terrace where he likes to write his music. The songs are stripped down to the bare bones, just voice, a guitar (be it regular 6 string Acoustic, 3 string Cigar Box Guitar, 4 string Ukulele or Lap style Dobro), a little harmonica now and then and maybe some foot stomping. No overdubs, just live, one take and if you listen carefully you'll hear in the background a soundscape created by the people and creatures David shares his environment with, just like any other day up there on the roof. Tracklisting 1. Help Me To Forget 2. You Didn’t Make Me 3. Our Own Hands 4. Raised In The N...

Going Up The Country - Johnny Woods

Image
Johnny Woods (November 1, 1917 – February 1, 1990) was a blues singer and harmonica player in the North Mississippi style. Woods was born in a small Mississippi town called Looxahoma, just west of Mississippi Highway 35. His harmonica playing first gained notoriety in the 1960s as a duet partner with fellow blues revival discovery guitarist/singer Mississippi Fred McDowell. They recorded together first for George Mitchell in 1967, for Chris Strachwitz's Arhoolie Records (King of the Country Blues V2), Swingmaster (Blues of Johnny Woods) and in 1972 for Tom Pomposello and Fred Seibert on Oblivion Records (Mississippi Harmonica). Stylistically, Woods' music sprang from the same North Mississippi Fife and drum blues band tradition as McDowell's. However, personal problems and plagues kept him rooted in the Delta, primarily working as a farm hand and sharecropper. After McDowell's death in July 1973, Woods faded away until George Mitchell paired him again with another late ...

Every Day I Have The Blues - Katie Webster & Gatemouth Brown

Image
Katie Webster (born Kathryn Jewel Thorne, January 11, 1936 – September 5, 1999) was an American boogie-woogie pianist. She is acknowledged as one of the most important blues artists of her generation. Until the 1980s this boisterous singer and pianist was known only to record collectors, as an obscure but prolific session musician behind Louisiana musicians on the Excello and Goldband record labels, such as Lightnin' Slim and Lonesome Sundown. Webster also played piano with Otis Redding in the 1960s, but after his death went into semi-retirement. But in the 1980s she was repeatedly booked for European tours and recorded albums for the German record label, Ornament Records. To balance these solo efforts, she cut You Know That's Right with the band Hot Links, and the album that established her in the United States; The Swamp Boogie Queen with guest spots by Bonnie Raitt and Robert Cray. Her latter fame got her spots at both the San Francisco Blues Festival and Long Beach Blue...

Bloodshot Records release: Not So Loud : An Acoustic Evening - Bottle Rockets - Review

Image
I just reviewed the new to be released Bottle Rockets recording. It's a stretch to call it blues but more roots music but it is well done and enjoyable. RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 16, 2011 The Bottle Rockets have been making some of the most incisive, literate and lighter-raising American music for going on eighteen years now. And some of the loudest, with a reputation built on a rough and tumble snarl honed by a thousand nights on stages around the world. But that only speaks to part of the story of the Bottle Rockets. So many bands, when you unplug the amps, you find that the emperor has no clothes, that the songs collapse in the quiet; it was the thrill of the tables rattling and ears ringing that sold the goods; the cold of the beer, the heat of the moment. Not So Loud, recorded in an acoustic setting at a 19th century schoolhouse in their home base of St. Louis, reveals a body of work steeped in the history of, and fitting easily into, the finest traditions of American folk music....

Joe Savage is one of the four muleskinners--along with Walter Brown, William S. Hart, and Bill Gordon--that Alan Lomax interviews in the film about his experiences working as a laborer building the massive levee systems so prominent throughout Mississippi. Savage, who spent several years in the Parchman State Penitentiary, also speaks on film about the brutality he faced while serving time and sings several blues songs capturing his emotions. See Lomax's book The Land Where the Blues Began, Chapter 5, pp. 235-55; Chapter 6, pp.257.

Bad News: The Blue Voodoo

Ted "Teddy J " Tosoff Vocals/Guitars/Voodoo magic Old enough to know better.....Older than I’d wish to share, besides family and friends, music is my lifeblood. Playing, recording and writing music is all I've really known and cared for. I guess for me this thing called The Blue Voodoo is a musical soul cleansing and the sum of all we have done. It’s the one thing that pushes me to succeed while keeping the road of life an interesting bit of pavement to ride on. Don´t Throw Your Love On Me So Strong - MOJO BLUES BAND

Vienna, Austria based Chicago blues style band. Sorry I couldn't translate. Signify - Strummindog - New recording review

Image
I have had the chance to review the new release by Strumming Dog. This is swamp music sung by a swamp dog. Dave Galanin (a.k.a. “Strummindog”) was born and raised in the small town of Sitka, Alaska. His “day job” is an international exhibiting visual artist; categorized as a Pacific NW Coast Silver Carver. Basically a self taught musician, Dave has played guitar for almost 40 years. His love of “Delta Blues” style predominates what he has played for the past 8 years. He is influenced by Son House, Charly Patton, Mance Lipscombe, Robert Johnson, Bukka White and all the greats of the past. He has attended blues workshops taught by Louisiana Red, Guy Davis, Corey Harris, & Paul Rishell. It is in the Poverty Bay of New Zealand that “Strummindog” is making a name for himself. Dave has opened for Paul Ubana Jones and Lil’ Ian Goodsman. This music is raw and wooly and good for your soul.

Whistlin' Alex Moore

Image
Whistlin' Alex Moore (November 22, 1899 – January 20, 1989) was an American blues pianist, singer and whistler. He is best remembered for his recordings of "Across The Atlantic Ocean" and "Black Eyed Peas and Hog Jowls." He learned the piano before, in 1916, entering the United States Army. His overall sound during the 1920s combined elements of the blues, ragtime, barrelhouse boogie, and stride. The same decade saw Moore acquire his nickname, based upon a whistle he made while playing the piano In 1929, he made his debut recordings for Columbia Records. The records he made did not sell in great quantities, and Moore did not record again until 1937, when he issued a few sides on Decca Records. It was 1951 before Moore recorded again with RPM/Kent. However, throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Moore performed in clubs in Dalla...

Rob & Joni happen to be the one of biggest fans and supporters of blues music I know. They are constantly throwng parties ...
