Landslide Records A Tribute to Sean Costello - Various Artists - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent Landslide Records Tribute to Sean Costello and it's really cool. Opening with Same Old Game, Albert Castiglia puts up a rumbling 2 step and lays down some real nice guitar work for an excellent opener. Steve Marriner brings How In The Devil with it's perfect shuffle beat great vocals and harp work. Title track, Don't Pass Me By has an almost spiritual feel with Victor Wainwright leading the way. This is an excellent blues ballad with great tension and stinging guitar work. Bob Margolin's guitar work on Low Life Blues is really outstanding with super Muddy Waters like slide and riffs. I always love the Mississippi All Stars and their rural approach and their treatment of Father is no different. With fat slide work and excellent vocals over a basic essential drum beat and keys make the track my favorite on the release. Debbie Davies brings shuffle track, Don't Be Reckless With My Heart and does a great job with strong vocals and slick Davies riffs. Wrapping the release is Oliver Wood and Amy Helm on Feel Like I Ain't Got A Home, a great soulful number with raw, freewheeling guitar work. This is a solid tribute release and great music.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Deb Ryder - Enjoy The Ride - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Enjoy The Ride, from Deb Ryder and is has a great feel. Opening with high stepper, A Storm's Coming, Deb Ryder is back sounding as powerful as ever. Johnny Lee Schell and Coco Montoya on lead guitar plays nicely off of the steady beat of Ric Ryder on bass, Mike Finnigan on keys and Tony Braunagel on drums. Exceptional ballad, For The Last Time, is a terrific showcase for Ryder's voice and also features Finnigan on vocal as well with the sweet guitar lead of Montoya. What You Want From Me blends New Orleans feel with pure gospel vocals from Maxanne lewis, Ricky Nelson, Leslie Smith and Kudisan Kai Regalot. Very nice. Got To Let It Go has a real nice BB King style groove featuring Cain and Ryder on a cool vocal duet and slick guitar lead. Sweet Sweet Love has a tight Latin beat with nice piano work by Finnigan and featuring fat guitar riffs by Debbie Davies. Wrapping the release is Red Line featuring the strong harp work of Pieter van Der Pluijm. With Schell on bass and lead guitar, this is a solid closer for a solid release.

Rip Cat Records artist: Alastair Greene - Dream Train - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dream Train, from Alastair Greene and it's a smokin' rocker. Opening with title track, Dream Train, Greene on lead vocal and guitar, joined by Jim Rankin on bass and Austin Beede on drums really hit the road hard including fiery slide work by Greene. Big Bad Wolf is a great boogie rocker with grinding guitar rhythm and slashing solos. Excellent! Billy Gibbons penned, Nome Zayne  has a heavy bottom and cool pinched guitar harmonics. One of my favorite tracks on the release is blues ballad, Another Lie, featuring features Walter Trout on guitar and Mike Finnigan on organ and some of the best Greene guitar riffs on tape in a while. Excellent! Acoustic instrumental, Song For Rufus, shows Greene's guitar virtuosity with serious intent. An exceptional piece of recording and playing. Dare Devil is a cool 12 bar number with a nice solo from Dennis Gruenling on harp, Mike Finnigan on organ and of course Greene on guitar for one of the most balanced tracks on the release. Blues guitar super star, Debbie Davies joins Greene on funky rocker Grateful Swagger with both artists really ripping some great riffs. Tight bottom instrumental... very cool! A beautiful instrumental tune, Iowa shows colors of electric guitar in lead soloing over tom tom. This is a very nice presentation and a nice showcase for sensitivity and guitar craft. Thick power rocker, Down To Memphis,  adds super guitarist Mike Zito with a lot of girth. Very nice. Wrapping the release is jazz fused, Lucky 13, with snappy drums, a driving beat and fluid guitar runs. This is a great track to wrap a really solid release.

Number 7 Records artist: Jay Stollman with Debbie Davies - Room For One More - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Room For One More, from Jay Stollman with Debbie Davies and it's a romper. Opening with Walter Trout's Ride 'Til I'm Satisfied with Johnny Mennonna on bass and Tommy Nagy on drums drive a hard beat and with swagger to spare, Stollman on vocal and Debbie Davies on lead guitar blaze a great track. I'm Done is a straight up rocker with solid vocals from Stollman and includes some real nice slide work from Andy Abel and super keys from Matt Zeiner. Johnny Winter's Tired Of Tryin' has a heap of Johnnny's feel in it and remnants from Muddy Waters. I really like Stollman's vocals on this track and paired with Kevan Totoian on harp and Davies on lead guitar a regular Chicago style treat. Luther Johnson' Lonesome In My Bedroom is a terrific track showing the best of Stollman, Davies and Zeiner. A great slower blues track, Stollman has nice feel and Davies really gets a hold on the fretboard and rips some of her nicest lines that I have heard in a while. Very cool! Eddie Miller's, I'd rather Be Drinking Muddy Water takes a really nice shuffle and standout walking bass line by Scott Spray lays a super foundation for Davies to step out. This is a really nice showcase of her work and something that I'm really pleased to be presenting. Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come is a track that measures a vocalist's depth and I can say Stollman holds his own in a fine rendition of this classic. Backed by Zeiner on organ and dressed by a nicely articulated guitar solo from Jeremy Goldsmith this track really hums. Jr Walker track, Pucker Up Buttercup has that great 60's funk feel with Scott Spray hammering the bass and Davies laying in some fine blues riffs punching it up. Chuck Berry's Back To Memphis has it's distinctive Berry feel and Davies gets the double stops just right. Stollman leads the way and Zeiner on piano and organ rids high on a tight bass line by Spray. Rockin! Tumble has a real cool Latin blues feel and Davies gets a couple of really cool sounds riffing out on this number. Organ work by Zeiner creates great feel and Stollman sits nicely in the groove. Possibly my favorite track on the release. Can't Slow Down is a straight on rocker (like Don Nix's Goin' Down) and this band is up to the task. Andy Abel on lead and slide guitar joined by Spray on bass and Nagy on drums makes this a tight little rocker. Lonnie Johnson's Another Night To Cry gets a cool, slinky makeover with Abel just laying back in the pocket, counter punching with nice guitar riffs. Stollman has a unique quality to his voice making it somewhat addicting. It's cool when he does something really difficult because you see his strength. Climbing out like a tarantula after his prey, Abel steps up and devours the solo on this track. Nice! Country funk is the story on Devil In Disguise with a bit of an Elvin Bishop feel. Totoian is back on harp, paired with Davies, Spray and Nagy. A crisp little number gives Totoian a nice spot to show his stuff and Davies rips a nice hole in it herself. Love it! A bit of Louisiana funk on Love Me & Leave Me features a nice story telling posture by Stollman and spot on piano work by Zeiner. Davies is really hitting the line on this release and this track is no exception, complimented nicely by slide work by Abel giving it an almost George/Barrere/Payne/Hayward feel. Excellent! Wrapping the release is title track, Room For One More, a soulful acoustic number. Stollman gets one more chance to show his super vocals backed by warm acoustic slide work of Abel. This is a tight release and one well worth checking out!

VizzTone Label Group artist: Debbie Davies - Love Spin - New release review

I just received a copy of the newest release (4/21/15), Love Spin, from Debbie Davies and she rips as always! Opening with Life Of The Party, Davies has a little of the Albert King funky sting in her guitar with Paul Opalach on organ, Wilbo Wright on bass and Don Castagno on drums. Title track Love Spin, still holds a light funk but with a bit more country funk along the lines of Elvin Bishop. Opalach lays out a real nice lap steel solo and Davies hits right back with a fine articulate solo of her own. On ballad Let The Heartaches Begin, super sax man joins Davies on on lead vocal and throws out a healthy sax solo. Davies lays down one of the nicest guitar solos on the release... controlled but sweet. Don't Change It Up has a solid bottom by Scotty Spray on bass and is joined by Jay Stollman on vocals. Another number with a funky rhythm, this track has solid commercial potential. Davies plays some hot plucky lead on this number heating things up nicely. Shuffle track, It's All Blues has a nice easy sway and with Dana Robbins reinforcing the back with a nice sax line, Davies steps up with short crisp guitar riffs. Talk Real Slow has a cool groove with lightly inlayed lap steel effects. Davies gets some otherworldly sounds from her guitar on this track making it a definite standout. Boogie track, I'm Not Cheatin' Yet, features a really hot sax solo from Robbins and Dave Keyes on boogie piano. Vocal duet by Davies on this track coupled with the instrumental solo trading makes it my favorite on the release. Two Twenty-Five-Year-Olds has a country blues rhythm (T For Texas) and a stinging Texas style guitar solo. Davies continues to mature as a guitar player and her skills are ice pick sharp. Jazzy track, A Darker Side Of Me, is lightly accompanied by Castagno on brushes, with Davies playing a richer part of the fretboard venturing more into Duke or Earl territory. Very nice! With a blend of Willie Dixon and Freddie King, Davies brings out I Get The Blues So Easy, a guitar shuffle with Hanck blowing out his sax. Davies cuts loose with one of her hurricane solos on this track and coaxing Hanck into a shared spotlight. Excellent! Wrapping the release is Way Back Down, featuring Davies on slide guitar. With a Rollin and Tumblin basis and hot slide work you couldn't ask for a better closer.

Delta Groove Music artist: Terry Hanck Band - Gotta Bring It On Home To You - New Release review

I just received the newest release (April 15, 2014), Gotta Bring It On Home To You, from Terry Hanck Band and it's a party. Opening with Elvin Bishops Right Now Is The Hour, featuring Hanck on lead vocal and hot sax. This is a great track with a lot of punch from Bob Welsh on piano and Johnny Cat Soubrand on guitar. Next up is Maxwell Davis' Whole Lotta Lovin', and Hanck really reinforces that he isn't just a sax player with fine vocals. Soubrand again steps up with some hot guitar riffs but this track from the day it was written is all about the sax. Butch Cousins really creates a hot swing on drums and Tim Wagar keeps it steady on bass. Pins and Needles is a straight up R&B style rocker with Kid Andersen laying down some chicken pickin on guitar. Doug James adds to the sax heat on this track. Peace Of Mind is a smokey stylized blues number with welsh and Soubrand setting the pace, Soubrand really turning on the heat on this particular number with a crisp solo. Hanck of course won't let you down and steps up with excellent phrasing of his own on sax. Excellent! T's Groove is a rolling boogie instrumental allowing Jim Pugh (organ), Kid Andersen (guitar) and of course himself shine in the spotlight for another excellent romp. My Last Teardrop has a strong New Orleans R&B feel. Hanck really handles the vocal lead well and James again steps up to support the band with nice sax work. Excellent sax phrasing is the name of the game and this track has it. The track breaks loose into a galloping boogie letting Soubrand loose for a quick rip and Hanck steps it up for super sax to wrap the track. Walt Aldridge's There's No Getting Over Me is up next with a real pop feel. Hanck takes center stage for a clean sax solo and his vocal work is supported by nicely orchestrated organ work by Kid Andersen, clavinet work from Lorenzo Farrell and backing vocals from Lisa Leu Andersen. Tommy Ridgley's Jam Up is a great New Orleans instrumental rocker with racing sax work from Hanck and James. Bob Welsh is strong on keys and Soubrand hits it square on guitar. Hot track! Title track, Gotta Bring It On Home To You has a firm R&B lope and Hanck shares vocals with Debbie Davies. Soubrand, Andersen and Davies all contribute nice guitar solos on this track. Wrapping the release is Don Robey's One Horse Town, a fast paced R&B style track with nice guitar riffs from Soubrand and full horn work from James and Hanck. This is actually a real happy release and one that should receive broad attention.

Addicted - Gina Sicilia, Debbie Davies

Young Philadelphia songstress Gina Sicilia exploded onto the scene in 2007, as her debut CD, ALLOW ME TO CONFESS, was met with joyous acclaim by fans and critics alike. She was heralded as a distinctive new voice in the Blues, as well as an insightful songwriter and interpreter of neglected classics in the Rhythm & Blues canon. In 2008 she was nominated for “Best New Artist Debut” at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee, just as her sophomore release HEY SUGAR proved her also to be a legitimate contender in the worlds of Classic Country and Americana. With her new 2011 release, Can't Control Myself, Gina broadens her stylistic palette, infusing even more Soul and Americana into her bedrock influences of Blues and R&B. This CD features seven new Gina Sicilia compositions, as well as three choice covers borrowed from Bobby Bland, Stevie Wonder, and Ike & Tina Turner. Gina’s singing and songwriting continue to break new ground, showing remarkable depth, power, and seemingly unstoppable growth. Can't Control Myself was produced and engineered by Gina’s label mate, the insanely talented Dave Gross, who also played every instrumental track on the record except for trumpet, sax, and one lap-steel track. Now 25 years old, the genre-defying Gina Sicilia continues to smash pigeonholes into kindling and redefine the boundaries of soulful music.
