Chance of Rain - Peter Karp & Sue Foley

Image
Gifted singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist and American troubadour, Peter Karp, is a master songsmith with an art for spinning true-to-life emotions, humor, and candor. With an upbringing that was equal parts southern Alabama and the swamps of New Jersey, Karp¹s music is fueled bythe Yankee-Rebel juxtaposition. He first caught national attention with help from Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who recorded and toured with Karp on his first label release "The Turning Point." Karp further established himself on the national scene as a critically acclaimed songwriter, and accomplished guitarist and pianist with the release of his Blind Pig debut entitled "Shadows and Cracks." On the road across the U.S. and Canada, Karp repeatedly transfixes his live audiences. Critics compare his songwriting to John Hiatt and John Prine, with impressive guitar and slide licks infused by his love of Freddie King and Elmore James. Peter Karp personifies the amorphous Americana sou...

Delmark Records Artist: John and Sylvia Embry - Troubles - New release review

Image
I just received the new release, Troubles , from John and Sylvia Embry and it's great! Some of the tracks included were originally released on Razor Records over 20 years ago but none ever released on CD and 5 tracks are previously unreleased altogether. Opening with Wonder Why , a a great slice of Chicago with Sylvia on vocal and bass and Johnny Guitar Embry on guitar. Slyvia has one of thise stellar voices and John knows how to get your attention on guitar. Backing the Embrys are Iceman Robinson on rhythm guitar and Dino Alverez on drums. Title track Troubles is a great track with John stepping up on the intro with chilling riffs and Sylvia really belting out on this slower blues number. John continues riff as the track goes on making you wonder why he isn't a household name. Excellent. On Brook Benton's Lie To Me , the Embrys lay down a cool shuffle bed and Sylvia uses her superior vocal skills to hold the track in the palm of her hand. John stretches out on guitar, ...

Bob Lanza Blues Band - "Til The Pain is Gone - New release Review

Image
I just received the newest release (January 14, 2014), ' Til The Pain Is Gone , from Bob Lanza Blues Band and it's quite good. Opening with Maude , Lanza shows his fine abilities as a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. Backed by Reverend Sandy Joren (bass), Noel Sagerman (drums)and David "Snakeman" Runyan on harp, Lanza sets a solid groove andshows real flair on his riffs. Ed "Doc" Wall adds cool organ work on this track as well adding warmth to the bottom. Next up is I'll Take Care Of You , a slow blues number with stinging good guitar riffs and smokin tone. Lanza uses really nice guitar phrasing to emphasize his vocals and Doc adds understated organ t push Lanza's guitar work. Nice! On title track, 'Til The Pain Is Gone , an uptempo shuffle track with rock tendencies gives Doc a cool opening for harp and grinding Texas style guitar riffs to push the track to a hard driver. Snake Byte is a slick shuffle track with a cool swing. With Snakeman ...

Delmark Artist: Magic Sam - Live At The Avant Garde - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Live At the Avant Garde , from Magic Sam and it's terrific! This is a rare recording from 1968 and we are fortunate to have this turn up and become available. Opening with Freddie King's San-Ho-Zay , Sam is really cutting the groove. A master of phrasing and with clear tone this track is bright and alive. Don't Want No Woman is a cool up paced shuffle track with Sam on vocal with his classic guitar retort followed by Big Mojo Elem on bass and Bob Richey on drums. Capturing Sam at his best this is a great track. BB King's I Need You So Bad is classic with a mixture of Sam, King and Walker riffs shows the diversity of his style. On Junior Parker's Feelin' Good , Sam takes the boogie to a new level. This is an excellent track and you can just feel the electricity in the club. In Lowell Fulson's It's All Your Fault Baby , Sam milks the blues out of a great blues track with nice tremolo effects. You Belong To Me is a ...

Update on Matthew Curry!

Image
BLOOMINGTON — For most 18-year-olds, graduating from high school would ranks as the Big Life Experience of the Year. For Bloomington’s Matthew Curry, being handed his diploma with Bloomington High School’s Class of 2013 last string was just one in a series. The veteran blues prodigy is putting a capper on his amazing ’13 by headlining this year’s New Year’s Eve at the Castle party at 8 p.m. Tuesday, along with musical cronies the Turncoats and Kyle Yap. It’s Curry’s second NYE in a row headlining at the Castle — still, he notes, his favorite musical space. That’s saying something, since 2013 saw the singer-guitarist performing in major venues during his first national tour, opening for rock legends Foreigner in arena spaces and playing a flurry of summer blues fests, from the Chicago Blues Festival to the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival. “I love the Castle,” he says. “It’s so historic and not so huge like, say, the Coliseum (U.S. Cellular) … you get to be mor...

SY KLOPPS BLUES BAND

Image
The Artist known as Sy Klopps started out as a fictional "recluse prodigy" musician. It was all just a trick played on booking agents by Herbie Herbert, the successful rock and roll "Personal Manager". It was during the relationship building part of phone conversations with fellow music business people, where poking fun and gaming was always expected, that the legend of Sy Klopps was born. Ironically, Herbie decided to become Sy Klopps. Actually bring Klopps to life. The real legend of Sy Klopps started when all Herbie's connections with famous musician friends to jam, gig and record with made it doable and even more importantly, fun. Herbie retired from managment at the tail end of 1993 and jumped headlong into Sy Klopps. It became his passion. He built his own state of the art commercially competitive recording studio and recorded his first album, "Walter Ego". "Walter Ego" was released in 1993 on Guitar Recordings Classic Cuts label. Gi...
