Overton Music artist: Russ Green - Stone Cold - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Stone Cold , from Russ Green , and it's a driving blues rocker. Opening with Lint Redux , you are immediately in the middle of a swampy blues with modern effects. With a firm foot stomp by Felix Pollard on drums and Vic Jackson on bass Russ Green on harmonica and vocals really has the earthy feel. Giles Corey on slide gives the track great grease and Green's harp work is strong. Excellent opener. 12 Feet of Water opens with a terrific harmonica aria before grinding into a super drum driven romp. With the feel that I can only describe as Hill Country , Green delivers such soulful vocals, comforted by Joe Monroe on keys, this track just grabs you. Green's harmonica is like a shuddering wind blowing through you with the thumping bass of Vic Jackson and Vince Agwada on guitar. Excellent! Easy going shuffle, Nobody Knows has a smooth, supple melody with backing acoustic guitar, minimal drum work and melodic ha...
CD submissions accepted! Guest writers always welcome!!

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Hunnia Records artist: Dionne Bennett - Sugar Hip Ya Ya - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sugar Hip Ya Ya , from Dionne Bennett and it's an energetic performance of Rhythm and Blues. Opening with Clarence Carter's Tell Mama , often associated with Etta James or Janis Joplin. With Bennett's powerful vocals and Tamas Sovsri on trumpet, Zoltan Albert on sax, Laszlo Borsodi on guitar, Matysas Premrcz on B3, Attila Herr on bass and Lajos Gyenge on drums this is a solid opener. On title track, Sugar Hip Ya Ya , the horn section is really pumping out a dark vibe and Little G Weevil lays down some really tactile guitar solo lines. Bennett really strokes this track giving it a great feel. Funky, Yes We Can Can has a terrific drum/bass/ horn fabric that gives Bennett a great stage for her vocal delivery. Backed by Jonathan Andelic and Rita Foris on vocals, and a short but crisp guitar solo by Borsodi, this track is smoking. Soul track, Don't Fall For Love , showcases Bennett's vocals in a different ...

Blue Lotus Recordings artist: Ms Zeno the Mojo Queen - Back In Love - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Back In Love, by Ms Zeno the Mojo Queen and it's powerful! Opening with a super, romping, R&B track, Back In Love , Zeno not only shows her powerful voice but her excellent sense of rhythm and phrasing. Backed by Roland Johnson on vocal, Mark Hochberg on viola, Abbie Steiling on violin, Andy Hainz on cello, Dustin Shrum on trumpet, Kevin O'Conner on drums and guitar and Paul Neihaus on bass, keys and horns, this is a super opener. In My Shoes is a terrific soul track which draws comparison to Gladys Knight and Aretha. That is serious treading territory and I think that Zeno deserves the comparison. Excellent! Slowing things down on Willie Brown , with more of a soulful blues feel, Zeno has an earthy delta feel, with harp work by Brandon Santini and guitar by Little G Weevil. Very nice. Mojo Queen has a cool new Orleans funky feel and Zeno really gets in the slot, pumped up by Tom Martin on accordion and ...

VizzTone Label Group artist: Little G Weevil - Something Poppin' - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Something Poppin' , from Little G Weevil and it's really different. Opening with high energy rocker, Here I Come Knocking , Little G leads the way on vocal and guitar, joined by Daniel Harper on drums, Marton Pfeff on bass, Laci Borsodi on rhythm guitar, Matyas Premecz on keys, and Danny Del Toro on harp. Very cool. With a distinctive R&B feel, title track, Something Poppin' shows a slinky side with thick vocals by Little G and cool backing vocals by Rebeka Easley Ellis and Sharika Allen Brown on backing vocals. With cool guitar riffs and a solid bass line, this is a cool track. Really cool R&B track, When You Want Me To Deal With This , is one of my favorites on the release featuring super vocals by Little G and a strong bass line by Pfeff. Premecz's key work sparkles and Little G lays in some real nice guitar riffs. You Can't Say Nothing has a real nice instrumental interlude featuring ...
