Alligator Records artist: Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials - Slideways - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Slideways , from Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials and it's terrific! Opening with Bad All By Myself , Lil' Ed on lead guitar and vocal, gets things rocking right off the bat. With Michael Garrett playing a strong rhythm line reinforced by James "Pookie" Young and Kelly Littleton on drums, this is a great opener. The Flirt In The Car Wash Skirt is a great blues rocker with raucous slide work by Lil' Ed and Ben Levin on piano really gets this track boogieing. Vital rhythm guitar work by Garrett and a rock solid bottom makes this one of my favorites on the release. Elmore James flavored, 13th Street And Trouble , is a strong track with a pounding bottom and super piano work by Levin. Lil' Ed has this track by the short hairs and is really shaking it. Cooking! Laid back Chicago blues , More Time , has solid pacing and features Lil' Ed upfront on lead vocal. Garrett showcases his lead gui...

I started a quest to find terrific jazz and blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

The Mighty Cash Cats - The Ballad of Johnny and June - New release review

Image
I just received the newest release, The Ballad of Johnny and June from The Mighty Cash Cats , a nostalgic trip through American folk, country and rock music through the eyes of The Mighty Cash Cats as Johnny and June Carter Cash. Opening with Carl Perkins' Long-Legged Guitar Pickin' Man , you can definitely hear the influences of the man in black in vocal and arrangement, really nicely adorned by Oliver Thin on chicken picken guitar. Title track, The Ballad of Johnny and June has the feel of midwest rocker with flavors of Seger and Frey. Although not mentally transported, Michael and Leticia nicely capture the spirit of Johnny and June on this track. Merle Travis' Sixteen Tons is a blend of Tennessee Ernie Ford, The Stray Cats and Johnny Cash. Jimmy Calire's addition on B3 and Leticia's bass work are tight. Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe is up next, again capturing the spirit of Johnny and June on a classic track. 40 Shades of Green is my favorite track on ...

Americana Made - The Mighty Cash Cats - New Release Review

Image
I just got the chance to listen to Americana Made by The Mighty Cash Cats - Michael J. & Leticia. This is an unusual recording covering Johnny Cash's career from Sun Records to the Rick Ruben American Recordings. Decked out in black and using Cash's vocal inflections, Michael J. and Leticia plus the addition to a few tunes by Hank Williams, Tim Hardin and Carl Perkins as well as two original numbers. The band, in addition to Michael J. Smith on vocal, guitar, Hammond and bass; Leticia Blumette on vocal, bass and guitar and strongly supported by Jarold Davis on lead guitars and vocals; and Justin Young on drums. The tunes included are Jackson, Tennessee Flattop Box, Ghost Riders in The Sky, No More Lonely Days and Empty Nights, Long Legged Guitar Picking Man, If I Were A Carpenter, Jambalaya, Wildwood Flower and The Dancer. The tribute is well throughout and performed. Leticia's vocals are particularly clear and interesting on Jambalaya. Need some Cash... here you go! If...
