Overton Music artist: Russ Green - Stone Cold - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Stone Cold , from Russ Green , and it's a driving blues rocker. Opening with Lint Redux , you are immediately in the middle of a swampy blues with modern effects. With a firm foot stomp by Felix Pollard on drums and Vic Jackson on bass Russ Green on harmonica and vocals really has the earthy feel. Giles Corey on slide gives the track great grease and Green's harp work is strong. Excellent opener. 12 Feet of Water opens with a terrific harmonica aria before grinding into a super drum driven romp. With the feel that I can only describe as Hill Country , Green delivers such soulful vocals, comforted by Joe Monroe on keys, this track just grabs you. Green's harmonica is like a shuddering wind blowing through you with the thumping bass of Vic Jackson and Vince Agwada on guitar. Excellent! Easy going shuffle, Nobody Knows has a smooth, supple melody with backing acoustic guitar, minimal drum work and melodic ha...
CD submissions accepted! Guest writers always welcome!!

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Joe Flip - Old Soul Live - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Old Soul Live , rom Joe Flip and it cranks. Opening with Steve Ray Vaughan's Pride and Joy , Joe Flip shows he's got the chops to make Vaughan proud. Not sliding far from SRV's original arrangement this is a solid opener. On original track, Just Friends , Flip really gets things rocking, Chuck Berry style with driving guitar lead and vocal, Trent Boldt on bass, Mike DuBois on drums and Adam Daniel on keys. Freddie King's I'm Tore Down is up next with a solid shuffle rhythm. Daniel lays down a cool electric piano solo and Flip rips a cool guitar solo of his own. On Elmore James' The Sky Is Crying , Flip leans toward the Albert King/ SRV arrangement with a warm organ solo by Daniel and a ripping solo by Flip. Just Got Paid is the best of four ZZ Top covers with plenty of grind by Flip on guitar and tight drums work by DuBois. Wrapping the release is Hendrix's Voodoo Chile giving Flip plenty of ...

Loud Folk Records artist: Joe Flip - Home Sweet Home - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Home Sweet Home , from Joe Flip and it's a cool mix or country rock and blues. Opening with title track, Home Sweet Home, Joe Flip on guitar and vocal leads this way on contemporary countrified rocker. With Tim Boldt on bass, Mike Dubois on drums, Toby Marshall on piano, and with Swanny Rose on backing vocals this is a super opener. Jimi Swing is a terrific blues rocker with a heavy bottom with strong guitar riffs by Flip and a tight bottom courtesy on Marshall on organ, Boldt on bass and Dubois on drums. Possibly my favorite track on the release. Krapkicker, Anna Lee , features Flip playing a ever growing guitar melody, both picking and on slide, over a cool country beat and Marshall on organ. Very cool. Put Your Lovin' On Me is a cool laid back, blues rocker with a country sting. With Marshall holding the beef on organ, Flip is free to jam the melody on lead guitar. SRV's Lenny gets a real nice remake mai...

Tony & Joe - Tin Can Tunes - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Tin Can Tunes , from Tony & Joe (Tony Cuchetti and Joe Flip) and it's a cool retro blues rocker. Opening with stripped down, Mess Around , Tony has the lead vocal, acoustic guitar, and percussion and Joe holds tight on his famous Hayburner oil can guitar. Good opener. With a laid back tempo somewhat like JJ Cale, IJ has a cool melody and super underlying guitar lead. Six Feet Underground has a cool jazzy rhythm and is a nice showcase for Tony's pop vocals. Down Home Girl is a sultry ballad with warm vocals and bluesy electric guitar lead. Wrapping the release is real nice Hayburner guitar/harmonica (guest harmonica Indiana Sfair) cover of Amazing Grace . This is a very nice closer for a cool release.   If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page!
