The Mike Bloomfield Story - part 9

Image
Michael Bernard "Mike" Bloomfield (July 28, 1943 – February 15, 1981) was an American musician, guitarist, and composer, born in Chicago, Illinois, who became one of the first popular music superstars of the 1960s to earn his reputation almost entirely on his instrumental prowess, since he rarely sung before 1969-70. Respected for his fluid guitar playing, Bloomfield knew and played with many of Chicago's blues legends even before he achieved his own fame, was one of the primary influences on the mid-to-late 1960s revival of classic Chicago and other styles of blues music. In 2003 he was ranked at number 22 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Get Facebook support for your favorite band or venue - click HERE

Bryan Lee - Blues Singer

Image
Bryan Lee (born March 16, 1943, Two Rivers, Wisconsin) is an American blues guitarist and singer based in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is also known by the nickname braille blues daddy and has been a fixture on Bourbon Street scene since the 1980s. Lee completely lost his eyesight by the age of eight. His avid interest in early rock and blues was fostered through the 1950s by late night listening sessions via the Nashville-based radio station WLAC AM, where he first encountered the sounds of Elmore James, Albert King and Albert Collins. By his late teens, Lee was playing rhythm guitar in a regional band called The Glaciers that covered Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry material. Through the 1960s, Lee's interest turned to Chicago blues and he soon found himself immersed on that scene, opening for some of his boyhood heroes. In 1979 he released his first album named Beauty Isn't Always Visual. In January 1982, Lee moved to New Orleans, eventually landing a stead...

Imitate The Sun - Chris Bergson Band - Review of New Release

Image
This new release by Chris alludes to many different influences like Ry Cooder and Al Green (conscious or not)but nothing sounds like a copy. It's fresh and cool and has a great sound. There are a couple of ballads, a number of traditional blues tunes and a few so R&B influenced that seriously could be right out of the Stax collections with horns and all. Chris has a plucky guitar style with a nice touch on the slide but can get gritty and sound authentic on the traditional blues groove with old style riffs paying respect to those that came before him. Check it out and see what you think! Write on our Facebook Wall or post your Photos of great blues events! -  Here

Head Honchos - Self Titled - New release review

Image
Starting off with one of the cornerstone song of the rock blues explosion, Goin' Down, an old Don Nix song popularized by the likes of Freddie King, Jeff beck and SRV, this cd breathes fire coming out of the gates. It has a number of original songs as well as funky covers of Neville Brothers and Pickett tunes. Rocco Calipari, lead guitarist from Howard and the White Boys plays rippin lead solos throughout making for a great listen.

Search For Robert Johnson

Image
The Search for Robert Johnson is a 1991 UK television documentary film about the legendary Delta blues musician Robert Johnson, hosted by John Hammond, and produced and directed by Chris Hunt. In it, Hammond travels through the American Deep South to pursue topics such as Johnson's birth date, place and parents, his early musical development, performances and travels, romances, his mythic "pact with the devil," his untimely murder in his late twenties, the discovery of possible offspring, and the uncertainty over where Johnson is buried. Throughout, Johnson's music is both foreground and background, from recordings of Johnson and as performed on camera by Hammond, David Honeyboy Edwards, and Johnny Shines.

Mean Old World- Terry Robb

Image
Considered one of the top acoustic blues guitarists on the West Coast, Terry Robb is also an inventive and ever-evolving American primitive master. As an heir to the late, great John Fahey’s musical legacy, Robb is an established icon in a pantheon that includes Robbie Basho, Leo Kottke, Peter Lang, John Renbourn, and Stefan Grossman. Because American primitivism, a transitional style that ranges between country blues and early 20th century string-band music, is often nuanced by dissonance and minor tunings, it is sometimes considered esoteric and obscure, appealing only to a musically intellectual elite. But Robb has distinguished himself by redefining this complex finger-picking style, using popular and traditional genres to open up and make this approach accessible to the general music-loving public. Robb is that rare talent, a musician’s musician and an enormously popular performer. Onstage, his fleet fingers, wry humor, and intense focus mesmerize audiences. The passionate ar...

Joss Stone (born Jocelyn Eve Stoker; 11 April 1987) is an English soul singer-songwriter and actress. Stone rose to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album, The Soul Sessions, which made the 2004 Mercury Prize shortlist. Both album and single each received one nomination at the 2005 Grammy Awards, while Stone herself was nominated for Best New Artist, and in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2004 was ranked fifth as a predicted breakthrough act of 2004. She became the youngest British female singer to top the UK Albums Chart in history to have her first album at number one. Stone's third album, Introducing Joss Stone, released in March 2007, achieved gold record status by the RIAA and yielded the second-ever highest debut for a Britis...

Something's Wrong - Johnny Moeller - The Moeller Brothers

Image
Johnny Moeller (born Jon Kelly Moeller, 31 October 1970, Fort Worth, Texas) is an American blues guitarist. He had early exposure to music in the home as his father played a little boogie-woogie piano and was constantly listening to music. He started playing guitar in his early teen years and soon discovered Slim Harpo and Jimmy Reed in his father's record collection. Additionally, Moeller remembers hearings lots of both ZZ Top and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Over the years Moeller's main influences have been from Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Earl King and Grant Green. Lesser, but meaningful influences come from a wide variety of other blues, soul and funk artists. He began playing in Dallas and Fort Worth blues clubs whilst still in high school. During the summers Moeller and his year and a half younger brother Jay Moeller, who was already playing drums (and is now the drummer with The Fabulous Thunderbirds), would travel from their home in Denton down to Austin to ...

Highway Bound - Lloyd Jones new release review

Image
This new release by Lloyd Jones is a great mixture of old traditional blues tunes and a few originals played in the style of Elizabeth Cotten, John Brim, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Mc Tell, Big Bill Broonzy and Mississippi john Hurt. The recording is very consistent and entertaining. I think you'll find it a good go to album if you want the old finger picking accompaniment along with Charlie Musselwhite on harp and solid singing all done acoustic style. Good job

Gamblin' Man - David "Honeyboy" Edwards

Image
David "Honeyboy" Edwards (June 28, 1915) is a Delta blues guitarist and singer from the American South. Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi. Edwards was 14 years old when he left home to travel with bluesman Big Joe Williams, beginning the life as an itinerant musician which he lead throughout the 1930s and 1940s. He performed with and was a friend of iconoclastic blues musician Robert Johnson. Honeyboy was present on the night Johnson drank poisoned whiskey which killed him, and his story has become the definitive version of Johnson's demise. Edwards knew and played with many of the leading bluesmen in the Mississippi Delta: Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Johnny Shines. He described the itinerant bluesman's life: “ On Saturday, somebody like me or Robert Johnson would go into one of these little towns, play for nickels and dimes. And sometimes, you know, you could be playin' and have such a big crowd that it would block the whole street. Then the police wo...

Though he was born in Alabama and grew into adulthood in Georgia, Lewis spent most of his life in Chicago, moving the city in the 1930s. Shiver - Too Slim and the Taildraggers

Image
This is a pretty interesting recording of blues influenced rock music. Lots of riffs, lots of grease and lots of rock. It's not a rip off of Foghat, SRV or ZZ Top. It's got it's own sound. The vocals are fitting and the groove keeps you going. If you dig the rock blues sound with a dash of tex and greasy guitar, this may be a good choice.

Hey Hey - Big Bill Broonzy

Image
Big Bill Broonzy (26 June 1898 – 15 August 1958) was a prolific American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s when he played country blues to mostly black audiences. Through the ‘30s and ‘40s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with white audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century. Broonzy copyrighted more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including both adaptations of traditional folk songs and original blues songs. As a blues composer, he was unique in that his compositions reflected the many vantage points of his rural-to-urban experiences. Get Facebook support for your favorite band or venue - click HERE

Interview/Spotlight - James Gurley

Image
James Gurley (December 22, 1939 – December 20, 2009) was an American musician. He is best known as the guitar player of Big Brother and the Holding Company, a psychedelic/acid rock band from San Francisco which was fronted by singer Janis Joplin from 1966 to 1968. James Gurley was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 22, 1939. As a boy he sometimes worked with his father who was a stunt car driver. Occasionally this work entailed performing as a human hood ornament with a helmet as his father sped through a flaming plywood wall. The stunt was popular with crowds but not with James - particularly not the day he knocked out his two front teeth and singed his hair to the point where he had to shave his head completely. At the age of nineteen James took up the guitar and began practicing long hours while listening to old Lightnin' Hopkins records. He never had a guitar lesson, preferring to learn by ear. He spent four years at Detroit's Catholic Brothers of the Holy Cross, studyin...

The title track of her sophomore release "Still The Rain" also received a 2011 BMA Nomination for BEST SONG. She won 3 Muddy Awards in 2010 including BEST FEMALE VOCALIST and BEST PERFORMANCE for the 2nd year in a row. Backed by her stellar band, this singer delivers a blistering mix of contemporary & old school blues. Sorry no mention of the band members... not listed in my sight. In my mind a lot of times the band makes the whole deal.

Tech Talk - Premier Twin 8 R (1965)

Tube configuration is a 6X4 rectifier, two 12AX7 pre-amps, (one for 1st gain stage, the other to drive the tremelo circuit), and a 7591A power tube (single ended, class A.) A pair of 8" alnico speakers, this baby absolutely barks killer harp tone. Surprising amount of bass from those two little 8's, rich, creamy overdrive, great sounding harp amp. Twin 8's "rule" for harp, except you gotta mike it for loud gigs. I'm convinced a rig made up of a dozen Premier Twin 8's cabled up in parallel would be the ultimate harp rig! He also writes songs alone, and his solo career continues to this day. His work includes the following genres: blues, delta blues, harmonica blues, and electric harmonica blues.Cotton became interested in music when he first heard Sonny Boy Williamson II on the radio. He left home with his uncle and moved to West Helena, Arkansas finding Williamson there. For many years Cotton claimed that he told Williamson that he was an orphan, and that Williamson took him in and raised him; a story he admitted in recent years is not true. Williamson did however mentor Cotton during his early years. When Williamson left the south to live with his estranged wife in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he left his band in Cotton's hands. Cotton was quoted as saying, "He just gave it to me. But I couldn't hold it together 'cause I ...

Damn Right, I Got The Blues - Scott Holt Band

Image
Holt made his first step toward musical apprenticeship when his father took him to Chicago to hear bluesman Buddy Guy. “I had never been in a club before or heard a really great guitar player like Buddy live,” Holt recounts. After a backstage meeting, the young student and venerable master stayed in touch. Over the next year or so Holt was invited on stage to jam with Guy, and then one day Guy called to invite Holt into his band. “I’d never even been in a band before,” Holt says. “I tried to get bands together in my parents’ basement in Tennessee, but it never worked out. So all of a sudden at 18 I was leaving home for Chicago with my guitar, my amp, a suitcase and my passport.” Holt played at Guy’s side for a decade. “Buddy taught me everything, from how to order at a restaurant to how to run a band and win over a crowd. He is my hero and one of my best friends. To this day, what he can do never ceases to amaze me.” And Guy remains an enthusiastic supporter of Holt. “He heard Ku...

Tech Talk - Gibson GA-40 (1957)

Image
Surprisingly, the GA-40 wasn’t Gibson’s most powerful amp of the time, contrary to the kind of firepower that you might think the powerful Les Paul Standard demanded. But remember, the Les Paul wasn’t designed to be the blues-rock and heavy-rock monster that it would prove itself to be in the mid ’60s and beyond. It was originally designed as a solidbody alternative for jazz and pop players, guitarists much like its namesake, and for this market, Gibson deemed a pair of lower-powered 6V6 output tubes and a conservative 14 to 16-watt rating absolutely adequate. Don’t believe for one second, however, that this diminutive rating means a GA-40 can’t roar when you want it to: these are real fire breathers, truly scorching when you crank them up, and a lot louder, too, than that output rating might imply. Hard Dollar - Hadden Sayers New cd review

Image
Hadden is a new artist to me so I'm reviewing this cd cold. My first impression is it would be a good cd to put on and party to. It has a pretty good rhythm section throughout and all of the songs sound different but distinct. I know that there are some pretty good tunes including the one in the video below, " Back to the Blues' along the lines of Robert Cray and my favorite, Moneyshot...an instrumental. Overall I'd say the cd is a country (real country) blues cd that will keep you listening. Enjoy

Naked Blues Vol II - K.K. Martin Ne cd Review

Image
Just received a new copy of the K.K. Martin release. Martin, who is a very adept acoustic guitarist has put together a solid cd of traditional blues tunes. His finger picking technique is a good compliment to his vocal work and I have to say it is more pleasant to listen to than a few "top name" acoustic Robert Johnson tribute cd's which although very well executed sounded over produced and lacking..well...the blues. This cd is worth the listen. I think you'll find it rewarding.

Hellhounds on My Trail - Todd Rundgren's Johnson

I gotta say this took me totally by surprise. Used to be a big Todd Rundgren fan and then it appeared he got a little bogged down in electronics. I just read in Vintage Guitar magazine that he has a new tour/cd and it's called Todd Rundgren Johnson. I have checked out a few clips on youtube and it is actually pretty cool. Check it out! Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. He has also been prolific as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians. During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren engineered and/or produced many notable albums for other acts, including Straight Up by Badfinger, Stage Fright by The Band, We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf (now ranked as the fifth biggest-selling album of all time), and Skylarking by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to Rundgren's "Time Heals" being the eighth video played on MTV, and "Change Myself" was generated...

Born in Carolina - Wes Mackey

Image
For years he traveled under the radar in search of both his personal and musical identities and now, after close to 50 years as a professional musician Mackey is finally becoming recognized in North America and is busier than he has ever performing, writing, recording and collaborating. The journey has been less than typical for a bluesman. Born and raised in rural South Carolina he learned to play the guitar from the seasoned old blues players of the Deep South and he is glad to have been part of that great bygone era. He eventually moved to Augusta, Georgia where he began working in small juke joints and dusty honky tonks and where his first “professional” gig paid 50 cents and a chicken sandwich. Soon he found himself playing in the local bands that backed up touring greats like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, Stevie Wonder and many others.
