Overton Music artist: Russ Green - Stone Cold - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Stone Cold , from Russ Green , and it's a driving blues rocker. Opening with Lint Redux , you are immediately in the middle of a swampy blues with modern effects. With a firm foot stomp by Felix Pollard on drums and Vic Jackson on bass Russ Green on harmonica and vocals really has the earthy feel. Giles Corey on slide gives the track great grease and Green's harp work is strong. Excellent opener. 12 Feet of Water opens with a terrific harmonica aria before grinding into a super drum driven romp. With the feel that I can only describe as Hill Country , Green delivers such soulful vocals, comforted by Joe Monroe on keys, this track just grabs you. Green's harmonica is like a shuddering wind blowing through you with the thumping bass of Vic Jackson and Vince Agwada on guitar. Excellent! Easy going shuffle, Nobody Knows has a smooth, supple melody with backing acoustic guitar, minimal drum work and melodic ha...

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Universal Music Group artist: Nine Below Zero - Third Degree - New Release Review

Image
I just received the most recent release, Third Degree , from Nine Below Zero , and it's quite entertaining. This release is made up of two sessions, Third Degree Original Release: Simon Boswell Sessions and Glyn Johns' Third Degree Alternative Production: Recorded At Turn Up-Down Studios. Opening with 11+11 , 9 Below Zero is full force into alt rock with bright pop vocals. Wipe Away Your Kiss continues in the pop rock vein firmly establishing this band as a pop rock machine. Why Can't We Be What We Want To Be shows flecks of the earlier work with hints of harp and guitar but it's full ahead pop rock. Tearful Eye has the hook and the beat. This is the best track on the release with strong melodic feel. True Love Is A Crime gets a little bit of the punk edge but retains the polish of a pop band. A cool rocker. Sugarbeat really makes power pop it's motto. A strong pop track it is the catchiest track on the release. Easy Street SE17 has a bit of ska to it reatinin...

9 Below Zero - Don't Point Your Finger - New Release Review

Image
Now and again I receive super releases from earlier years modified or released to new audiences and this is one of them. Don't Point Your Finger from 9 Below Zero is a hot release that never stops. Opening with One Way Street is a terrific blues infused rock track with the melodic qualities of Ozark Mountain Dare Devils and the attitude of J. Geils band. Super! Doghouse is a quick rocker a la Chuck Berry. This band has mastered the ability to mix punk, blues and rock to come up with a sound of thie own and it's terrific. Mark Feltham really rips the harp on this track and Dennis Greaves is right on his tail. Helen is a straight up rocker with a cool hook just waiting for radio play. Ain't Coming Back is a bar style boogie withnice slide work from guitarist Greaves. Bassist Peter Clark and Drummer Stix Burkey keep it simple for lead vocals from Feltham and Greaves. Cool track. I Won't Lie , is a punky rocker with pop edge. Harp and guitar riffs bring the track t...
