Overton Music artist: Russ Green - Stone Cold - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Stone Cold , from Russ Green , and it's a driving blues rocker. Opening with Lint Redux , you are immediately in the middle of a swampy blues with modern effects. With a firm foot stomp by Felix Pollard on drums and Vic Jackson on bass Russ Green on harmonica and vocals really has the earthy feel. Giles Corey on slide gives the track great grease and Green's harp work is strong. Excellent opener. 12 Feet of Water opens with a terrific harmonica aria before grinding into a super drum driven romp. With the feel that I can only describe as Hill Country , Green delivers such soulful vocals, comforted by Joe Monroe on keys, this track just grabs you. Green's harmonica is like a shuddering wind blowing through you with the thumping bass of Vic Jackson and Vince Agwada on guitar. Excellent! Easy going shuffle, Nobody Knows has a smooth, supple melody with backing acoustic guitar, minimal drum work and melodic ha...
CD submissions accepted! Guest writers always welcome!!

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Real Gone Records artist: Ron Spencer Band - Into The Blue - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Into The Blue , from Ron Spencer Band and it's got a great feel. Opening with rocker, Closer To The Bone , Mark Gibson has the lead vocal spot and Ron Spencer revs up his guitar with great tone on guitar. Bob Purdy on bass set a solid foundation with Ross Moe on drums and Dan "Cato" Eaton does a real nice job on piano. Addicted To You is a cool, laid back swamp rocker with low slung vocal lines. This track has a great feel. One of my favorite tracks on the release is So Wrong with its tight Latin rhythms and warm guitar tones. Very nice. It's Time , has a cool T-Bone Walker feel and Gibson's vocals are really nice. Spencer shows his had at blues guitar -" T-Bone style" and he does a really nice job. Eaton gets a real chance to show off on rock 'n roller, Fine Fine Woman with it boogie beat and Gibson of course leads the charge with excellent vocals. Wrapping the release is another L...

Real Gone Records artist: Jesse Ed Davis - Red Dirt Boogie - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Red Dirt Boogie by Jesse Ed Davis newly released by Real Gone Music and it's a real nice slice of early 70's rock. Davis was on the who's who list of musicians with Clapton, Leon, George Harrison, Taj Mahal, the Dominoes, you name it. This release opens with Every Night Is Saturday Night from his self titled solo release. With it's communal party feel, it could easily be a part of the Mad Dogs with it's driving drum beat, New Orleans style trumpet and clarinet. Red Dirt Boogie has the swampy sound of Dr John and the vocal styling of Leon Russell. Further On Down The Road was co written by Taj Mahal and it definitely has his flavor (Think Ain't Gwine To Whistle Dixie). Davis sets up some of his best vocals on the release and has solid warm backing vocals Merry Clayton, Gloria Jones and Bobby Jones as wekk as sweet sax by Jerry Jumonvlle. Reno Street Incident has influences of both Mahal and L...

REAL GONE REVS UP FOR SUMMER WITH RONNY AND THE DAYTONAS 2-CD Set Featuring Their Complete Recordings Highlights June 30/July 10 Slate That Also Includes Limited-Edition Releases from the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Viscounts and Banana and the Bunch, a Deluxe Fanny Reissue and a Timely Grateful Dead Release           Nothing says Summer like surf and hot rod music, and on June 30 Real Gone Music is paying tribute to one of the greatest bands ever to come down the (turn)pike, Ronny and the Daytonas, with a 2-CD, 48-track set featuring four unreleased tracks and notes from “Ronny” himself! Being from Nashville, Ronny and the Daytonas tossed a little country twang into their surfin’ sound; our next artist, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, also turned country on its head by injecting an unapologetic hippie ethos into their country-rock sound. On July 10, we are reissuing their classic The Adventures of Panama Red album on limited edition (...

Real Gone Records: Grateful Dead - Dick's Picks Volume 12 - 6/26 & 28/74 - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest Grateful Dead release from Real Gone Records, Disk's Picks Volume 12 . Starting Disc 1 with a jam that leads into what many have labeled "the most extraordinary live version of China Cat Sunflower ever recorded". Transitioning with Mind Left Body /Jam into I Know You Rider this is an exceptional recording. Having a little fun with the Beer Barrel Polk a and then Truckin' these guys are really on a roll! Spanish Jam has a lot of fire and a certain spirit that is different from much of what I have heard throughout the other recordings. Very cool! Up next is Wharf Rat and then super closer Sugar Magnolia . The band is tight and on fire.  Disc 2 opens with Eyes Of the World , the encore from the Boston show. Needless to say it is superb. The legendary second set of the Boston show opens with the rare performance of Seastones (Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin's electronic piece). The balance of the concert as recorded includes Sugar Magno...
