I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Randy Chortkoff has passed. My thoughts are with his family.

Randy Chortkoff, founder, president and CEO of Delta Groove Productions, passed away today at 8:40am in Los Angeles at the age of 65.
A highly successful entrepreneur outside of the music business, Chortkoff simultaneously followed his true passion as a music producer, performer, and promoter for two decades before founding Delta Groove Productions almost 15 years ago. Delta Groove was his labor of love, a culmination of a lifelong devotion to traditional blues and roots music. Through his vision and leadership, the company quickly rose to its current position as an industry leader, encompassing Delta Groove Records, Eclecto-Groove Records, No Respect Records, Festivals Exclusive Booking Agency, independent artist and event promotions and management, and more.
Ever the astute businessman, in recent months Randy oversaw the planning and arrangements for Delta Groove Productions and its affiliates to continue to flourish and carry his passion onward after his passing, under the leadership of longtime associates Jeff Fleenor and Tammie Barnum, and the rest of the talented and devoted Delta Groove team.
Randy leaves behind children Jessica, Taylor and Joshua, an extended family of Delta Groove musicians whose lives he touched, and a worldwide network of music lovers who both shared and benefited from his passion for music.

Randy was also was the leader of top blues band The Mannish Boys.

Few blues acts have perfected the tricky maneuver of honoring the storied history of the Blues, while at the same time keeping the music up-to-date, as well as Delta Groove’s The Mannish Boys. It’s a balancing act that they’ve honed over the course of six highly-acclaimed CD releases and countless nights gigging on concert stages around the world. Conceived as an all-star showcase for the cream of the west coast blues crop, The Mannish Boys have stayed true to that vision. They’ve continually evolved through the years, seeking out and spotlighting the talents of true Blues legends in a setting that stays true to the deep roots of genre, providing them with the support required to excite today’s blues audiences.
Their newest release on Delta Groove marks a number of firsts for The Mannish Boys. “Double Dynamite”, as the title suggests, serves up a double dose of The Mannish Boys on a two CD set, allowing them to really stretch out and feature more special guests and sounds than on any of their previous releases. Especially notable is new featured vocalist Sugaray Rayford, a soulful, gospel-inflected singer, originally from Texas, who has been little known outside of his current home base in Southern California until now. Also along for the ride this time, and adding variety and depth in the vocal department, are veterans James “Icepick” Harman, Mike Finnigan (who in the ‘60s played keyboards on Jimi Hendrix’s “Electric Ladyland” LP, among many other accomplishments in his long career), and Jackie Payne, plus long-time Mannish Boys frontman Finis Tasby. The band’s regular guitarists Kirk Fletcher and Frank Goldwasser also take turns in front of the vocal mic, as does The Mannish Boys harp playing honcho Randy Chortkoff. And as a special treat this time out, Mud Morganfield, oldest son of the undisputed king of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, also contributes as a guest vocalist, bringing a south side Chicago blues unrivaled by any living vocalist. Other special guests on this amazing release include harmonica aces Rod Piazza, Jason Ricci and Bob Corritore, and guitarists Elvin Bishop, Junior Watson, Nathan James, and Kid Ramos, all backed by the hard-swinging rhythm section of Jimi Bott and Willie J. Campbell, plus an array of other very special musicians.

The Mannish Boys - Wrapped Up & Ready

From the beginnings of the band six CDs ago, Randy Chortkoff has worked like the ringmaster of a three-ring circus, keeping one of the tighest all-around blues bands in the world today busy in the center ring, while performing amazing feats of coordination around them by spotlighting countless guest stars on each and every release. As a result the Mannish Boys have featured some of the best and brightest names in blues today, from the most seasoned veterans to the most exciting young talent, all carefully mixed and matched to field teams of artists perfectly in synch with one another on each song they take on. It wasn't at all unusual for past releases to feature three or four different guitarists, and a full cast of all-star guest soloists. But this time out, the plan was different: scale things down, simplify, strip everything down to just the fundamentals. However... as you now know, they've never been known to do anything halfway, so that plan went out the window on day one.
The result is the latest Mannish Boys extravaganza, complete with an all-star guest lineup worthy of most full-blown blues festivals. And much like a perfect wedding, there's something old, something new, something borrowed, and plenty of blues(s). The core band is led by a powerhouse vocalist and front man Sugaray Rayford, and features the double-barreled guitar firepower of Kirk "Eli" Fletcher and Franck Goldwasser, anchored by the skin-tight rhythm section of bassist Willie J. Campbell and drummer Jimi Bott. Chortkoff himself contributes harp and vocals as needed, and right there you've already got one of the best lineups in the business. But of course, that's only half the story.
Among those making guest appearances are the sultry singer Candye Kane (helped out by her amazing guitarist Laura Chavez), Bay Area great - by way of New York and Chicago - Steve Freund, blazing young guitarist Monster Mike Welch, and piano master Fred Kaplan. Blues harmonica fans will also find plenty to enjoy as three guests are also on hand to help hold down harp duties: Delta Groove recording artist Bob Corritore, teenage phenomenon Jacob "Walters" Huffman, and the great Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Also notable on this release is the return of guitarist Kid Ramos, one of the leading blues guitarists of his generation, who has been off the scene for the last couple of years dealing with serious health issues. And that's not all, folks... also on hand are bass player Bill Stuve and drummer Dave Kida, both veterans of Rod Piazza's Mighty Flyers, French import Nico Duportal on guitar, a full array of background singers including promising newcomer Trenda Fox, and much more. So - no halfway measures here. But just what you'd expect from the Mannish Boys: an exciting tour through the very best that blues has to offer in the 21st century.

The Line Up Keeps Growing!
We're thrilled to announce more artists for the 17th Annual Doheny Blues Festival! Don't miss a weekend of Blues on the Beach, May 17 & 18 at
Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California!

Joining the line up are...

BUDDY GUY: Legendary guitarist, Buddy Guy, is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago's fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city's halcyon days of electric blues. He has received 6 Grammy Awards, 28 Blues Music Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. Rolling Stone ranked him in the top 25 of its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

ROSIE FLORES: (Performing with James Intveld) The Rockabilly Filly, Rosie Flores, took flight in SoCal and has been a major figure in the Los Angeles, Austin and Nashville music scenes. She blends rockabilly, honky tonk, jazz, and Western swing along with traditional influences from her Tex-Mex heritage. Rosie's solo recordings have found homes on both the Billboard and Gavin charts and are featured in seven motion pictures.

JAMES INTVELD: (Performing with Rosie Flores) A native of Los Angeles, James Intveld is a multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter and actor.  He's in high demand for his skills as a player; as adept at the slap bass, slide, steel, and drums as on guitar. Continuously cast in movies, TV and videos, James was the singing voice of Johnny Depp's character in the John Waters film Cry Baby. Intveld plays his own brand of rockabilly and his live performances will have you rockin' out at the beach!

THE MANNISH BOYS REVUE: Few blues acts have perfected the tricky maneuver of honoring the storied history of the Blues, while at the same time keeping the music up-to-date, as well as The Mannish Boys.  It's a balancing act that they've honed over the course of six highly-acclaimed CD releases and countless nights gigging on concert stages around the world. Conceived as an all-star showcase for the cream of the west coast blues crop, The Mannish Boys have stayed true to that vision.

KID RAMOS: (Performing with The Mannish Boys) If David "Kid" Ramos had gone into the family business with his mother and step-father, he might be a professional opera singer today; to the eternal thanks of blues fans around the world, Kid Ramos decided to march to a different drummer. From his time with The Fabulous Thunderbirds to his solo career, Ramos has become one of the most exciting, powerful blues guitarists in the business. Kid Ramos will be honored this Saturday at the Orange County Music Awards - click here for more details.

SUGARAY RAYFORD:
(Performing with The Mannish Boys) Texas born Caron "Sugaray" Rayford began his musical career at the age of 7 singing & playing drums in church, and his gospel influence can be heard and felt in his music. In 2011, Sugaray became one of the lead vocalists for the Mannish Boys and sang lead vocals on Double Dynamite, the Mannish Boys CD that won Best Traditional Blues Album in May 2013 at the Blues Music Awards. When Sugaray belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it. The excitement is palpable when he takes the stage; he is a superb vocalist and entertainer.
