Real Gone Music - The Mamas and the Papas - The Complete Singles 50th Anniversary Collection - New release review

Image
I just had the opportunities to review one of the best pop collections ever assembled and it's terrific. That's right...I'm talking about the Mamas and the Papas and The Complete Singles 50th Anniversary Collection . Sure, this collection has all of the radio tracks, Go Where You Wanna Go , California Dreamin' , Monday Monday , I Saw Her Again , Words of Love (a terrific sleeper featuring Mama Cass), Dancing in the Street , the huge... Dedicated To The One I Love , Twelve Thirty , the dynamic Dream A Little Dream of Me , but also Mama Cass solo tracks including Make Your Own Kind Of Music ! All this and 22 pages of liner notes by Ed Osborne, some great photos and 53 tracks should keep you happy for a long while. Made during a time when the hippie movement was just beginning and the drug culture was an experimentation, a masterful compilation of singles by great writers and singers, John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty and Mama Cass Elliot.   If ...

Queen Delphine & the Crown Jewels - Come And Get It - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Come and Get It , by Queen Delphine & The Crown Jewels and it's got style. Opening with My Cat Got Nine Lives , a cool shuffle track features Queen on lead vocal accompanied by Norman Hamilton on harp, Lester "Lammy" Johnson on bass, Steven Weakley on guitar and Keith Strong. With a polished strut, Queen lays down a good opener. On I'm A Woman , Lammy drives the track with a strong bass line and Delphine gives it a healthy vocal oomph backed by Ezra Bufford on keys. Very cool. What Would I Do has a light airy feel with Delphine's vocals floating on a bed of keys and light percussion. Strong radio style track. R&B track with pop styling and Gospel overtones, Kindness For Weakness , is springy and solid. Bufford adds a real nice key solo adding a cool edge. Wrapping the release is Lammy's Blues , an instrumental blues with a bit of funk. With a solid bass line from Lammy, Hamilton plays harp and lead guitar over a...

Ruf Records artist: Royal Southern Brotherhood - The Royal Gospel - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, The Royal Gospel , from Royal Southern Brotherhood , and it's their best yet! Opening with Where's There's Smoke There's Fire , this band is hot. Tyrone Vaughan "smokes" the guitar strings with a vicious guitar solo and Norman Caesar's B3 ride is very effective. Darrell Phillips bass work, Bart Walker on guitar and Cyril Neville on percussion with Yonrico Scott on drums makes this a spectacular opener. I've Seen Enough To Know is a cool R&B style track with light funky guitar work and a great bass line. Blood Is Thicker Than Water has a super slinky, funky groove with reggae like vocals. An infectious percussion groove and slick guitar tips this one. A really cool track and one of my favorites on the release. R&B/gospel style, I Wonder Why really has a solid bass groove with nicely woven fabric of guitar , percussion, organ and vocals. Excellent! Cyril's fingerprints are on the writing of I'm Com...
