Sounds Of Freedom/Come Fly With Me - Devil Blues

Image
Devil Blues are a blues outfit from Białystok, Poland. The band was co-founded by Sebastian Kozlowski, a very talented guitarist. He plays in Devil Blues with Krzysiek Gorczak (vocal), Kamil Lickiewicz (drums) and Jacek Kaczynski (bass guitar). The band’s music corresponds closely to the modern sound of blues rock. Apart from playing the standards by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmi Hendrix, or BB King they perform many of their own pieces. Year 2006 was extremely successful for the band as it won most competitions they participated in and attained wide recognition of the critics and fans. Their debut album “Democratic session) was also released in 2006. “Twój Blues” magazine’s readers chose the band a “discovery of the year”. On the 30th of 2008 the band played a live gig in studio Rembrandt of Bialystok Polish Radio and the registered material was released on the album entitled: “Alive”. 1. Cold Cold Feeling - John Slaughter Blues Band

Image
Chris Barber’s bands have almost always had a guitarist (as opposed to a banjoist) since Alexis Korner was a band member in 1949. In the 1950s American stars such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, and Brownie McGhee (of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee) all played guitar with the band, as did Lonnie Donegan, Johnny Duncan, and Dick Bishop in the Skiffle Group. By the early 1960s, however, Chris realised he needed a permanent blues guitarist, and set about finding one. At about the same time a young musician was starting out on his hoped-for career, first playing five-string banjo, as his brother wanted a banjo player in his own traditional jazz band. A year later John Slaughter switched to guitar, and started to learn to play in a friend’s front room. The group’s drummer knew John Mayall (of Bluesbreakers fame) and John was asked to deputise in Mayall’s band one night, when the regular guitarist was ill. John remembers that he was not very well that night, but… Chris telephoned...

Little Red Rooster - LUCY ZIRINS

Image
“As a 12-year-old it was so hard to comprehend the death of my lovely uncle Chris, aged just 41. An accordion player like my granddad, he was learning to play acoustic guitar. When his stuff was cleared out, the guitar and his books and CD tutorials were about to be skipped and I asked if I could have them. I guess I learnt to play guitar to keep his memory alive.” Roll the clock forward to 2008 and the confused young girl who first picked up a guitar just four years ago is now an apprehensive 16-year-old, stepping out onto King Rollo’s Acoustic Stage at the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival in Colne. By the time she steps down from that stage half an hour later, Lucy’s life will have been transformed. As Alan White of earlyblues.com wrote after the event: “I saw Lucy for the first time at the Colne R&B Festival 2008 and all I can say is… ‘Wow!’ This young lady will go far – such a natural talent for the blues in one so young”. Lucy Zirins At The 2011 Great British Blue...

Yellow Dog Records artist: The Soul of John Black - A Sunshine State of Mind - New Release Review

Image
I just received the new release, A Sunshine State Of Mind , from  The Soul of John Black and it's really enjoyable. John A. Bigham, playing most of the parts as singer, songwriter and instrumentalist really delivers a nice package here. Opening with Magic Woman a rock/R&B style track, JB provides a solid package with a catchy hook and snappy beat. Echoing his voice with layers of backing vocals and lead guitar melody, this is a track that easily find it's way to the airwaves. Beautiful Day is a great soul track with a certain Al Green feel... excellent! East LA Lady has an uptempo club beat but not venturing far from the soul thread established by Marvin Gaye. Higher Power is another soul ballad again with an Al Green style structure. No real question where influences come from here. My thoughts, listen to masters to make masterful music. Johnny Bear (Give It To Me) , is another high energy dance track with R&B rhythms. I know that I make references to legendary ...

Catfish Blues - David "Honeyboy" Edwards

Image
David "Honeyboy" Edwards (June 28, 1915 – August 29, 2011) was a Delta blues guitarist and singer from the American South. Edwards was born in Shaw, Mississippi. Edwards was 14 years old when he left home to travel with blues man Big Joe Williams, beginning life as an itinerant musician which he led throughout the 1930s and 1940s. He performed with famed blues musician Robert Johnson with whom he developed a close friendship. Honeyboy was present on the night Johnson drank poisoned whiskey which killed him, and his story has become the definitive version of Johnson's demise. As well as Johnson, Edwards knew and played with many of the leading bluesmen in the Mississippi Delta, which included Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Johnny Shines. He described the itinerant bluesman's life: On Saturday, somebody like me or Robert Johnson would go into one of these little towns, play for nickels and dimes. And sometimes, you know, you could be playin' and have such ...

Blues and Trouble - Grand Marquis - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release (June 25, 2013), Blues and Trouble from Grand Marquis. Grand Marquis is Bryan Redmond on lead vocal and sax, Chad Boydston on trumpet, Ryan Wurtz on guitar, Ben Ruth on bass and sousaphone and Lisa McKenzie on drums and washboard. Opening with Bed of Nails , the band wastes no time establishing a strong instrumental presence with horns and slide guitar. Redmond has a very distinctive singing style reminiscent of earlier times and this track is jam packed full. I really like it! Every Day's The Same has a strong New Orleans jazz rhythm, again horn heavy on bottom. Redmond unleashes a nice sax solo followed by Boydston on trumpet and leading up to Wurtz on guitar. A bluesy R&B style track, Reputation gets a heavy dramatic treatment from Redmond on vocals before laying down a nice sax solo and Wurtz riffs off a real nice guitar solo as well. Empire Of Dirt is a really cool funky track with horn lead and popping drum accents. Boydston plays ...
