Provogue Records/Mascot Label Group artist: Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Dirt On My Diamonds Vol. 1 - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dirt On My Diamonds Vol. 1, from Kenny Wayne Shepherd and it's a solid blues rocker with plenty of radio potential. Opening with title track, Dirt On My Diamonds, Kenny Wayne Shepherd is back with his excellent vocals, tuneful melodies showing excellent swagger. With full horn/synthesized backing, Shepherd pours on his blistering guitar solos but just enough to wet your appetite. Funky, Best of Times, had a real nice bass line that plays against a horn line and Shepherd carries the melody vocally. With his guitar pumped through a wah pedal it really ties the funky rhythm with his bluesy attitude. Another pop track with its funky salting is Man on a Mission featuring Shepherd on vocal and keyboard backing complimenting Shepherd's rhythm guitar and drums. There's no lack of talent by KWS on guitar as he plays free flowing solos reminiscent of traditional southern rock. Wrapping the release is Ease My Mind with it's bluesy ballad format. Shepherd sings a few bars of melody, followed by some of the best blues riffs on the release, complimented by organ and drums. Shepherd really does rip it up pretty good on this one making it a strong closer.

Provogue Records artist: Walter Trout - Ride - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Ride, from Walter Trout, and it's a solid rocker with solid blues roots. Opening with Ghosts, a solid blues rocker, Trout on harmonica, guitar and vocal sets a heavy tempo, beefed up by Teddy Andreadis on Hammond organ, Michael Leasure on drums and Jamie Hunting on bass. This is a heavy footed, lumbering track and Trout lays out a searing guitar solo giving the release a great start. So Many Sad Goodbyes is another solid rocker with nicely overdriven guitar tone and Trout's featured vocals with Eric Corne singing in tandum. Reinforcement by Andreadis on Hammond gives the track a rich sound and the strong snare work of Leasure paves the way for another of Trout's slicing guitar solos. The strongest blues number on the release is Waiting For The Dawn with Trout leading the way, playing melodic lead on guitar. Folding his vocals nicely into the mix, warmed by the undertone of Andreadis' Hammond, this track is all about Trout's ability to squeeze his unique blues out of his strat and he certainly can do that. Very nice. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Better Days Ahead with Trout really laying his guitar open and letting the blues fly. With Andreadis on organ, the thump of Hunting on bass and powerful drumming by Leasure, Trout wailing the lyrics and his guitar showing full emotion. Excellent! Another cool track is snappy rocker, Leave It All Behind, with Trout feeding rockabilly style riffs, Anthony Grisham on rhythm guitar, rolling Wurlitzer work by Andreadis, and strong horn support by Aaron Liddard on sax. Wrapping the release is radio style track, Destiny, with Trout showing his softest vocals, backed by Corne, and warm guitar riffs, blended with Andreadis on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, Leasure on drums and Hunting on bass. Solid closer for another solid release by Trout.

Provogue Records artist: Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Trouble Is ... 25 - New Release Review (CD/DVD)

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Trouble Is...25, from Kenny Wayne Shepherd and it's great to hear. A release and reinterpretation of his second release, Trouble Is, Trouble Is ...25 sounds pretty fresh. Opening with Slow Ride, KWS really gets the program started with great vocals,  high energy blues riffs, and excellent sustain. With Chris Layton on drums, Kevin McCormick on bass and Reese Wynans on keys, this is a strong opener. Laid back, Everything Is Broken, anchored by Layton, has great drive and KWS shows all of the southern guitar spunk he has accumulated during his career. (Long) Gone has terrific Texas style swagger with hot guitar riffs and the addition of harmonica on this track really pumps it up. Classic, Somehow, Somewhere, Someday is just slow (fast) enough to really hit the groove. Wynans keyboard adds real tension and KWS's guitar work is stinging. Wrapping the release is Bob Dylan's fabulous Ballad of a Thin Man and KWS really knows how to work it. His vocals are soulful and believable and his responding guitar riffs scream. Wynans' organ and piano add another dimension. This is an excellent closer for a really strong redo by Shepherd. I'm checking out the concert DVD later tonight.

Provogue artist: Eric Bibb: Dear America - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dear America, from Eric Bibb and it may be his best in years. Opening with Whole Lotta Lovin' with it's rolling acoustic guitar riff and backing instrumentation by Ron Carter on bass and Glen Scott on keys this track had a very friendly warmness. Shaneeka Simon joins Bibb and Tommy Sims on lead vocal, and teamed with Steffan Astner on slide guitar gives this track strong appeal. Slower, lumbering Whole World's Got The Blues features a nice appearance by Eric Gales who lights up his electric guitar and Sims on bass, and Glen Scott on drums fill out the bottom. A modern take on the delta style blues, title track, Dear America pairs Bibbs acoustic guitar and vocal over Chuck Anthony on electric guitar, Scott on drums and percussion, Christer Lyssarides on mandola and Simon and Big Daddy Wilson on backing vocals. Strong ballad, Emmett's Ghost plays to Bibb's strength in songwriting, vocal and acoustic guitar. With a super melody, and message, Bibb delivers one of the best tracks on the release. Another upmix blues track, Talkin' 'Bout A Train fuses traditional blues with just a light tough of modern neo soul. Harmonica wiz Billy Branch steps up and delivers over hot drum beat and some great backing vocals by Scott. Funky! Wrapping the release is One-Ness of Love with the silky vocals of Lisa Mills paired with Bibb's own warm lead vocals. Violin work by David Davidson and David Angell, Scott on piano and Sims on guitar, make this a strong closer.

Provogue Records artist: Robin Trower - Coming Closer To The Day - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Coming Closer To The Day, from Robin Trower and I quite like it. The unearthly soaring riffs of Trower are missing but a soulful, nicely phrased blues player with continued sensitivity is here. Opening with Diving Bell, a lumbering blues rocker, Trower handles bass, guitar and vocal and does it with style. His rhythm guitar is chorded and distorted and his lead work, slicing and overdriven. His sense for the blues is strong. On title track, Coming Closer To The Day, has a light Latin rhythm and airy guitar lead and with upper and lower fretboard contrast, this is a really solid track. The Perfect Wrong is a gritty blues track with cool vocals and a strong drum lead and signature blues riffs by Trower giving it a good blast of steam. Little Girl Blue is one of my favorite tracks on the release is a quiet, ballad like structure but with excellent guitar lead over warm chords throughout. Very, very nice. Don't Ever Change is another real nice track with a calming but bouncing rhythm. Trower is a master of floating interesting lead work on the chords and this track is a prime example. His vocals are solid and unobtrusive. Wrapping the release is funky, Take Me With You. Trower lays down an excellent bass line and a wealth of rich chords leaving a wide open hole to fill with lead. This guy is a master at layering lead over chord over rhythm and this track is a super closer for a really nice release.

Provogue artist: Walter Trout - Survivor Blues - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Survivor Blues, from Walter Trout and it's his most mature and cohesive release to date. Opening with powerful slow blues number, Me, My Guitar and the Blues Trout is back locked and loaded. I love his command of the volume swell, using it like an old master, making his guitar cry like a baby and his prasing is magical. With Michael Leasure on drums, Johnny Griparic on bass and Skip Edwards on keys, this is a terrific opener. On Woman Don't Lie, it's a slink funky beat that gives this track traction.Trading lead vocal with Sugaray Rayford and adding Teddy Andreadis on Wurlitzer really sets this one up or a guitar slam and Trout is all over it. Gone are the days of cramming every note into one measure and real feel and biting riffs carry this track high. Shuffle track, Please Love Me has great feel and tension with relaxed riffs with excellent punctuation work on a heavily pumped up BB King like style. Red Sun is a drum driven blues rocker with excellent bass lines by Griparic and relentless guitar soloing by Trout. very strong. Elmore James' Something Inside Of Me is one of my favorite tracks on the release with both sensuous blues attack and explosive note full barrages giving the track really nice dynamics. Very nice. Otis Rush's It Takes Time has super pace and allows Trout space to lay down some really nice solo lines. There's no question that he's laying it all out here. Robbie Krieger (The Doors) is featured on slide on Mississippi Fred McDowell's Goin' Down To The River and lays down smooth, mellow and cohesive blues riffs. Very nice. Wrapping the release is J.B. Lenoir's God's Word and Trout sings the words like he wrote them. Sounding very personal and focused while singing the lyrics he puts his shoulder into the guitar solo, driving hard and soaring with reckless abandon. Excellent closer for a very strong release.

Mascot Label Group artist: Koch Marshall Trio - Toby Arrives - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Toby Arrives, from Koch Marshall Trio and I really like it! Opening with loose shuffle and title track, Toby Arrives, Greg Koch on guitar, Dylan Koch on drums and Toby Lee Marshall on Hammond set the corner stone for this latest release. This is a tight trio with feature strength all round. Funk Meat has a rich bottom provided by Marshall's organ and Greg's funky guitar lead is nicely enhanced by Dylan's tight drumming. Heed The Boogaloo has a driving bass line similar to a Manzarek riff setting a strong foundation for Greg to dig in with adventurous and nicely flowing guitar lead. His float from rock to jazz influenced lead is very nice.  One of my favorite tracks on the release is jazz rock fusion endeavor, Mysterioso, with understated bass and organ lines and a beautiful exploration in chorded melody by Greg and East Indian influenced bending/slide. Very nice. Marshall takes the helm for a solid ride on organ as well with Greg playing primarily bass lines and Dylan's tight drums support. Quick paced shuffle, Enter The Rats, is really snappy with pace that would satisfy Gatemouth Brown. Greg's solos are fluid and inspired and Marshall's Hammond lead is really nice. Boogie Yourself Drade is a hot track with driving bass lines and foot stomping guitar lead. Marshall starts low with poise before building to a real frenzy on Hammond leading to the final summation by the trio. Excellent! Wrapping the release is Sin Repent Repeat with hot slide work played vocal style for melody. Powerful Hammond work supplementing Greg and a great beat by Dylan make this an excellent closer for a really solid release.

Koch Marshall Trio To Release Toby Arrives on 2/23/18

MASCOT LABEL GROUP LAUNCHES PLAYERS CLUB IMPRINT WITH RELEASE

OF KOCH MARSHALL TRIO ALBUM TOBY ARRIVES ON FEBRUARY 23, 2018

The Koch-Marshall Trio Are American Guitarist Greg Koch, His Son Dylan Koch On

Drums and Hammond B3 Specialist Toby Lee Marshall

New York, NY --- Mascot Label Group has announced the release of Koch Marshall Trio’s Toby Arrives on February 23, 2018.  This will be the first album on the new imprint THE PLAYERS CLUB.  At the heart of this organ trio is a blues sensibility - but Koch's compositions are an amalgam of rock, funk, jazz and country served up with heavy grooves and dynamic improvisations delivered with no small dose of humor and occasional wild abandon.

The trio blends the explosive guitar manipulations of Greg, the groove-centric, power-pocket playing of his son Dylan on drums (who share many telepathic musical moments) and the glorious, Hammond organ stylings of the uber-talented Toby Marshall, Greg’s compositions are properly portrayed in the blues drenched, funk, chicken-fried, gospely jazz-rock panorama in which they were conceived. Their first release, “Toby Arrives” the first moments of their unexpected musical partnership captured at an extemporaneous jam session earlier in the year.

“So we went over there…the drums and B-3 were already set up and mic’ed. I sat down with my guitar and said, ‘Let’s just do a shuffle in G.’ And as soon as I heard it back I said, ‘We’re releasing this!’ So the very first notes we ever played is that first song you hear on the album, totally unrehearsed. And just from that very first tune I was like, ‘Holy shit! This is not your grandfather’s organ trio!’” Greg Koch

“Toby had actually retired from music,” Koch says of the 39-year-old Hammond B-3 ace. “For the last several years he’s been working for a farm, driving a semi and taking crops to the Twin Cities from River Falls. He had two young kids so he decided to stop touring to help raise the kids. For Toby, it was kind of like that scene in The Godfather where Michael Corleone says, ‘Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!’ But now he’s so excited to be playing in this trio because this is just such a perfect format for him to let his freak flag fly. It’s the perfect combination of this kind of churchy, bluesy, funky, jazzy, rock, chicken-pickin’ thing, and he fits right in.”

Jonny Lang & Black Stone Cherry

JONNY LANG EXTENDS SIGNS WORLD TOUR

Twenty-Five New North American Shows Added

Tickets On Sale This Week

Signs To Be Released On September 8th In North America

Los Angeles, CA --- Jonny Lang’s brand new studio album, Signs, will be released in North America on September 8th via SayRai / Concord Records.  The album (his sixth major label release) is his first in four years. The European release for Signs will be on August 25 via Provogue Records / Mascot Label Group.

The new album is available to pre-order here: http://amazon.com/dp/B071FPWNS6.  All pre-orders will include both “Bitter End” and “Make It Move” as instant gratification tracks.

This morning, twenty-five new shows in North America have been added to Jonny’s World Tour in support of Signs.  Tickets for most of these shows will go on sale this week.  VIP tickets will be available starting this Tuesday via www.jonnylang.com

Anyone who originally discovered Jonny Lang through his searing instrumental work will revel in the huge guitar tones and go for broke solos on Signs, while those who have appreciated his growth as an honest and passionate songwriter will find that honesty and passion unabated. Though he long ago left blues purism behind, Lang has never abandoned its spirit of universal catharsis through the relating of personal trials. Signs reaffirms his commitment to the blues and the guitar without sacrificing the modern approach that has made him such a singular artist.

It is hard to believe that at only 36 years old Jonny Lang has already had a successful career for two decades. Easier to believe when you learn he released his first platinum record at 15—an age when many young people are just beginning to play music. Lie to Me revealed a talent that transcended the crop of blues prodigies floating around in the late Nineties. No flashy re-hasher of classic blues licks, even at that early age Lang was a full-blown artist with a style of his own. Also, setting Lang apart from the wunderkind crowd was a 15-year-old voice that sounded like a weathered soul shouter. Actual life experience was yet to come, and has been subsequently chronicled in a series of five uniformly excellent recordings.

Since the release of his debut album, Grammy Award winning Jonny Lang has built a reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation. The path Lang has been on has brought him the opportunity to support or perform with some of the most respected legends in music.  He has shared the stage with everyone from The Rolling Stones and B.B. King to Aerosmith and Buddy Guy, who he continues to tour with today.

Jack Broadbent and Guthrie Brown have been confirmed as direct support on a majority of the appearances scheduled for August through October in North America. Both artists will appear solo.  For appearances in Spokane on November 27 through January as announced below, support will be announced in the coming weeks.

Guthrie Brown is a Nashville transplant by way of Montana who began playing the guitar at age six. By the age of seventeen, he left high school for Nashville to pursue his dream of being a professional recording artist. Now at twenty-two Guthrie has toured the country relentlessly, signed a publishing deal with BMG and is currently recording his first full length album with GRAMMY® Award winning producer, Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Dawes, Of Monsters and Men, James Bay).  For more information http://www.guthriebrownmusic.com/

Jack Broadbent was hailed “The new master of the slide guitar” by the Montreux Jazz Festival, and “The real thang” by the legendary Bootsy Collins.  He has spent the past year wowing international audiences with his unique blend of virtuosic acoustic and slide guitar, and poignant folk and blues inspired vocals. Born and raised in rural England, Jack grew up listening to artists such as John Lee Hooker, Peter Green, Robert Johnson, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, to name a few. These legends of rock, blues, roots and folk influenced his distinctive song writing, singing and performance style, which have a depth and heart that defies strict musical genres. Broadbent‘s performances exude a warmth, humor and energy that has electrified audiences worldwide. For more detail: http://www.jackbroadbent.co.uk or https://www.facebook.com/JackBroadbentMusic.
