The Yardbirds Story Pt 5: The Jimmy Page Years

Image
The Yardbirds, one of the early British purveyors of American blues music done in a contemporary fashion has a distinction of being the band that fostered the careers of three of the modern blues greatest guitar players, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Eric Clapton working numerous bands including John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream with jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Blindfaith with the addition of Steve Winwood and Ric Gretch replacing Bruce, Delaney and Bonnie, Derek and the Dominos, a band formed without the fame of the Clapton name and with featured guest Duane Allman and of course his own self named band. Jeff Beck had the Jeff Beck Group with undiscovered Rod Stewart (who was to headline the original Woodstock Festival (until Jeff decided it wasn't worth the trip), a second formation of the band with Max Middleton and Bobby Tench, Beck, Bogart and Appice formed with the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge and then various band members formed under his own name. Jimmy Pa...

Driftin' Blues - Ulrich Ellison Trio

Image
Winner of three Downbeat Awards, Ulrich Ellison is gaining international recognition as an electric guitar player whose sounds and tones are starting to attract an ever growing fan base. Critics have compared his playing with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, John McLaughlin and Mike Oldfield. Ellison´s style is fluid, melodic, and multidimensional. While his background is in classical compostion, blues and jazz, Ellison likes to extend his compositions into the realm of popular music. What underlies his music is an ethereal quality that takes the listener on a musical journey. His pieces have been performed by the UT Jazz Orchestra and the Austin Pops. Whether you see him play in an intimate club or a large open air venue, it is obvious that this guy just loves to play "live on stage". Sweat, emotion, expression, live the moment. Also of note is his distinct vocal style which compliments his guitar prowess. Recent performances have included acclaimed drumm...

Catfood Records artist: James Armstrong - Blues At The Border- new release review

Image
I just got a pre release copy of copy of James Armstrong's new release called "Blues At The Border". (Release date December 6, 2011). I've listened to the cd about 3 times and it really is good. It has a really relaxed manner about it and it has a great bluesy swing. James has a smooth voice and plays really tasty guitar riffs over a tight rhythm section. The recording features 11 tracks which were all written by Armstrong or his production affiliates. Armstrong, a native of LA was born into a blues performing family and was performing at 8 and touring at 17. He has worked with Albert Collins, Keb Mo', Cooco Montoya, Roy Brown, Chaka Khan, Ricky Lee Jones, Jan and Dean, Mitch Mitchell and Tommy Castro to name a few. James is a real entertainer! This is a recording that you should check out!

J Blackfoot 25 Nov 2011 W. Memphis Ak

Image
J. Blackfoot (born John Colbert, November 20, 1946), was an American soul singer, who was a member of The Soul Children in the late 1960s and 1970s, and subsequently had a moderately successful solo career. His biggest hit was "Taxi", which reached the charts in both the US and UK in 1984. John Colbert was born in Greenville, Mississippi, moving to Memphis, Tennessee with his family as a child. Generally known as "J." or "Jay", he acquired the nickname "Blackfoot" as a child, for his habit of walking barefoot on the tarred sidewalks. In 1965, after spending some time in Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville, he recorded a single under his own name for the small Sur-Speed label, before returning to Memphis, where he was heard singing in a street corner group by David Porter of Stax Records. After the plane crash that claimed the lives of Otis Redding and four members of The Bar-Kays, he joined the reconstituted group as lead singer, and perfor...

Dazed And Confused - The Yardbirds (Jimmy Page)

Image
The Beck-Page era Yardbirds recorded "Stroll On", a rendering of "Train Kept A-Rollin'" recorded for the Michelangelo Antonioni film Blowup, though Relf changed the lyrics and title to avoid seeking permission from the copyright holder. "Stroll On" features a twin lead-guitar break by Beck and Page. . The Beck-Page lineup recorded little else in the studio and no live recordings of the dual-lead guitar lineup have surfaced. The Beck-Page Yardbirds recorded a commercial for a milkshake product "Great Shakes" using the opening riff of "Over Under Sideways Down", featured on 1992's Little Games Sessions & More compilation. Beck, not being always the temperamental artist was fired from the band. Page took over at guitar. There was one recording made by Beck and Page with John Paul Jones on bass, Keith Moon on drums and Nicky Hopkins on piano — "Beck's Bolero", a piece inspired by Ravel's "Bolero...

All Your Love - Bobby Messano

Image
If you’ve never heard of Bobby Messano, he was born in New Jersey very close to New York City.He grew up in a time when a young guitarist could work hard, learn his craft and maybe become a guitar hero...(or at least play on a record or two) His main influences as a young guitarist were Jeff Beck,BB King,Eric Clapton,Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. He also listened to as much Beatles and R&B as he could get his hands on.Bobby played in NJ club bands from the time that he was fourteen years old, and by the mid seventies, he had become rather well known in the North Jersey area. His first big break came when Craig Leon and Seymour Stein of now famous Sire Records tried to sign him to a solo deal. Being young and maybe a lot scared, he graciously declined the offer and waited to fade into oblivion, despite his yearning to become a famous guitarist. By a strange quirk of fate (or maybe because someone was desperate) he received a call a few months later from John Scher’s office. John ...

New Recording Release; Electric Shepherd - Review

Image
I have just had the opportunity to listen to and am now attempting to review the new Electric Shepherd recording. I've seen descriptions of the cd that didn't make it seem very attractive but I've got to tell you... this is really cool. Now I'll say that with a caveat. I really have broad tastes. I've heard references to Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Airplane... you name it. I don't hear it. I hear a fresh new sound that has roots in the 60's SF sound with heavy echo and reverb but also embraces modern free form players like J Beck, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, The Mars Volta, TU, and maybe with a twist of very early Santana rhythm in an sonic driven environment. This is really quite interesting and if you're up for an adventure...this may be your ticket!Tommy Anderson on bass, Sonny Pearce on drums and Mark Nelsen on guitar and vocals “Like” Bman’s Facebook page (available in over 50 languages). New Release ; Baddest Band In The Land - The Weber Brothers - Review

Image
I just received and had the opportunity to review the newest release, "Baddest Band In The Land" by The Weber Brothers. The Weber Brothers are Ryan Weber: Upright Bass, Electric Bass, Vocals; Sam Weber: Guitar, Vocals; Shai Cookie Peer: Piano, Organ; Emmet Corndog VanEtten: Drums. This recording takes cues from many bands of the past like British rockers Badfinger and the Kinks, country rockers and arena bands... and topped off with piano licks which sound like Leon Russell is a guest artist and drum beat that tracks Bonzo. The release contains 13 original tunes, all which are precisely executed and demonstrating the Brothers own love of pop music. The common thread that runs throughout the entire recording is polish and epic execution. I believe that this recording will be well received by the music public as a whole. Bman's Exclusive Interview - Sam Hooper

Image
Bman: Hi Sam. Thanks for taking time out from your holiday to talk with me. I gotta tell you, I must live in a bubble! I picked up your recent release, " Sam Hooper Group - LIVE in Shanghai" and it blew me away! You have a musical expression of freedom that most people don't have. Have youheard that before? Sam: Hi Bman, My pleasure.  Thanks so much.  I haven't heard it described that way before.  Part of what I think you're referring to comes from thefact that that live CD was recorded at the end of a gig at the same club where we'd just played six nights a week for five months straight.  During that time we'd grown a lot as musicians and as a band.  We'd also gotten comfortable enough with each other and with the music to get free and really stretch out.  Also, since we were only a trio, we each had to play bigger and fill in spaces that would normally be covered by other instruments to give us a fuller sound.  The freedom also c...
