💿 ALBUM REVIEW: Ryan Barry - If I Did Not Speak Out

Ryan Barry is an up-and-coming U.S. jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and bandleader who has fast become a fixture of the highly competitive New York City jazz scene. He first fell in love with jazz and organic improvisation while playing in his university big band, a passion that eventually drove him to move straight to the heart of NYC in 2021. Since then, he has cut his teeth busking in Central Park, cutting late-night jam sessions at iconic institutions like Smalls, and playing city staple venues like Fiction and Maison Cafe Kitsuné. Since 2020, Ryan has studied closely under famed instructor Mike Tucker, cultivating a lyrical, velvety, and spacious hard-bop sound on the tenor horn that mirrors the legendary influence of icons like Sonny Stitt and Dexter Gordon. He found early streaming success when he signed with G² Records & Publishing and released a soulful bossa nova cover of "I Love How You Love Me," which blew up on Spotify's official All New Jazz playlist and pulled in over 110,000 streams. Following a three-year hiatus dedicated to deep jazz theory study and the subsequent release of his 2025 holiday collection A Very Barry Christmas, Ryan has returned to the forefront of modern jazz with his highly anticipated 2026 quintet record, If I Did Not Speak Out.

The Deep Dive
Opening with Billy Reid's, I'll Close My Eyes, with Ryan Barry laying down the melody on tenor sax , joined by Jacob Melsha who really sails on trombone. Charles Colizza on guitar, really drives the bop with fleet fingered fret work and with Chris Smith on bass and Matty Grattan on drums, this is an excellent opener. Original, Hold Me Close, has a solid Latin vibe with Grattan setting the line and Barry on sax and Colizza on guitar really digging on. Another masterful trombone solo from Melsha and a rich solo by Barry fleshes out the track nicely. On, Meredith Willson's, Till There Was You, Barry takes the lead with pure melody, joined by Melsha on trombone for some joined and alternated soloing. Colizza on guitar stays under the melody but delivers some rich chord shapes before taking a smooth, eloquent guitar solo and Melsha rejoins with some nicely melodic trombone work of his own making this classic much more than was originally conceived. Wrapping the release is title track, If I Did Not Speak Out with a cool, bopping rhythm. Barry lays down some of his most intense work on the release here chased by Colizza on guitar. Melsha really hangs it out there with some hot riffs handing off to Smith, Colizza and Grattan who grind it out nicely before rejoining and wrapping it all up neatly for a strong closer.

The album carries a sophisticated yet highly accessible energy, bridging traditional hard bop with smooth, modern warmth. It balances fiery, high-intensity moments of improvisation against deep, groove-heavy pockets that feel both intimate and expansive. Ultimately, it sounds like a tight, seasoned live band having a blast in a late-night room, delivering a sound that is incredibly soulful and easy to get lost in.

Bman's Verdict

This project captures a remarkably soulful late-night atmosphere, effortlessly blending cool melodic warmth with sharp, high-intensity swing improvisation.
