I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Brown Cow Productions artist: The Jimmys - Live From Transylvania - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live from Transylvania, from The Jimmys and I really like it. Opening with Jacqui Juice, the Jimmys are smoking from the start. With this hot shuffle instrumental, the band members get a chance to blow out the pipes right up front starting with Perry Weber on guitar, followed by Charley Wagner on trumpet, Pete Ross on sax and Jimmy Voegeli on Hammond riding high on the backs of Mauro Magellan on drums and John Wartenweiler on bass. Excellent! Boogie track, I Wonder features Voegeli on lead vocal and the excellent work of Darren Sterud on trombone over an ultra tight band who play together like an oiled machine. Nice! Rocker, You Can't Hurt Me Anymore, has more of a driving beat with strong vocals and solid solos by Weber on guitar and Voegeli on piano. Hell Or Heaven has a much easier sound with stronger radio appeal like a Chicago balance and nicely blended vocals. Another shuffle track with a pop twist, Love Will Find A Way, has a cool piano boogie vein with super work from Wagner's trumpet and hot riffs from Weber on guitar. Cold Women has a real nice swing and Wagner, Ross and Sterud roll together nicely. Ross steps up with a really warm sax solo on this one nicely showcasing his talents and Weber's guitar lines are fluid and stinging. Very nice! Slowing way down, Lonesome Whistle Blues is a really inviting track along the lines of T-Bone Walker or Ronnie Earl. Weber plays a really sweet intro blending nicely into the mix with BB King like accents and a great throaty performance by Sterud on trombone followed by Wagner on trumpet and again Weber. Excellent! With a lot of swing the gang is back on You Say You Will. Breaking into full shuffle Weber takes a nice long stroll followed by Streud. Very nice! With a hot Latin rhythm, Lose That Woman really rides on the super drumming by Magellen. Great vocal blends, super piano work and hot sax and guitar solos give this track plenty of traction. Wrapping the release is "The Band's" Ophelia which is an absolutely terrific track. Using the Band's basic timing with moderate instrumental improvisation, this track really hums with a snappy solo by Magellen. A great New Orleans style closer for a fun release.

RJ Ray Entertainment, Inc., artist: Ray Goren - Save My Soul - New release Review

I just received the newest release, Save My Soul, from Ray Goren and it's quite good. Opening with Stop, Goren on lead vocal and guitar steps up with a poppy blues rocker and a really soulful voice. I need to compare his vocals to someone? OK...Stevie Wonder. Yeah, the kid can sing and has nice phrasing. Matching his solid vocals with a mean streak on the guitar gives Goran the double whammy, swacking this track right at the radio hard! Save My Soul is a bit rockier with solid drum works from Rob Humphreys and an explosive guitar solo by Goren showing his chops. On ballad, Can't Live Like This, Goren stretches out vocally, showing his soul roots. Real nice radio track. I Need You Here To Stay is my favorite track on the release with a modern R&B feel and traces of D'Angelo syncopation in vocal delivery. Masterful guitar riffs flow giving weight to the instrumentation. Excellent! Wrapping the release is Rise Together actually has the feel of an earlier era of Wonder and his pop/soul mastery with a modern polish. Can't argue with success. This release has a lot of strengths and not many weaknesses. Goren is proving to be a tasteful guitarist with good song writing capabilities and a strong voice. Nice job!

D.A. Foster's "The Real Thing" Releases Today

D.A. Foster ~ The Real Thing
Shaboo/VizzTone
01/27/2015

"Four decades in R&B music. Now it's his time. He's the real thing...."
Mike Finnigan
We're doing some additional work for D.A. Foster above and beyond the work being undertaken by VizzTone. Please reply if you would like a review copy.

D.A. Foster learned to sing the blues from some of the greats, up front and personal. Starting at age 19 and all through his 20's (1971-1982), he was hands-on co-owner of the legendary Connecticut roadhouse, the Shaboo Inn. The Shaboo introduced newcomers like Aerosmith, the Police, Hall & Oates, Journey, ACDC, Cheap Trick, Dire Straits and Elvis Costello, and hosted blues greats by the week — Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, James Cotton, Koko Taylor, B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, Bonnie Raitt, and more. When many of these blues legends discovered D.A.'s natural vocal talents, they mentored him and invited him to cut his chops onstage with them.

In 1979 D.A. formed his own band, the Shaboo Allstars. Matt Murphy was just coming off the Blues Brothers movie and jumped at the opportunity to be the guitar player in the band. Foster credits Matt Murphy for launching the band with a license to work anywhere, and they toured the US for the next two years. In 1982 the Shaboo closed its doors, and the legendary Harvey Brooks began a five-year run with the band, during which they did a 7-night run opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan Meanwhile, D.A. continued working as a talent buyer and started a music production company.

In D.A.'s 35-plus year bandleader career, many notables have joined him onstage — Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, Dan Aykroyd, Maceo Parker, Buddy Guy, Mike Finnigan, Kal David, and countless others... and he has a long support history with B.B. King.

D.A. Foster is THE REAL THING — a deep blues & R&B singer of the first order, making timeless music with longtime friends, producers Tony Braunagel and Mike Finnigan, their phenomenal, Grammy award-winning Phantom Blues Band, and a few other very special people.
