I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

ANDY T-NICK NIXON BAND RELEASE DEBUTS ON BILLBOARD CHART!

Numbers Man, the latest studio album from the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band, debuted this week at #9 on the Billboard blues sales chart.
Andy and Nick have become one of the most acclaimed duos in the blues.  Andy T’s jazz-tinged guitar style is influenced by T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Magic Sam, and Albert Collins among others, yet it remains his own. The velvet-voiced Nixon, part of Nashville’s thriving blues and R&B scene in the 60’s and 70’s, sings in a style that recalls Jimmy Witherspoon and Billy Eckstine. Even though he’s now in his 70’s, Nixon’s voice still has all the power and energy of a man half his age and it’s crystal clear that this man was born to sing the blues.

As Blues Underground Network said, “Simply put, Andy T and James ‘Nick’ Nixon have quickly risen to the top of many people's lists of Great Collaborations.”

The previous two releases by the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band, produced by noted Texas guitarist Anson Funderburgh,  were critically acclaimed, with both garnering coveted Blues Music Award nominations
Elmore magazine said of Numbers Man, "Anson Funderburgh again produces and this time adds the Texas Horns as well as Kim Wilson on one track. Andy T plays a clean guitar, mostly in the style of T-Bone Walker while 74-year-old Nixon is as good a blues singer as any. This band just gets better with each recording."

Said Andy, "We are thrilled to debut on the Billboard Blues Chart with such an amazing group of artists. Many thanks to Blind Pig Records for their support."

BLIND PIG ARTISTS FEATURED AT THE CHICAGO BLUES FESTIVAL

Blind Pig Records will be well represented this month at the 32nd Annual Chicago Blues Festival in Grant Park, with performances by the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band, The Cash Box Kings, Shawn Holt and the Teardrops, and Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues.

ANDY T-NICK NIXON BAND
Andy T’s jazz-tinged guitar style is influenced by T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Magic Sam, and Albert Collins among others, yet it remains his own. Andy has toured internationally with blues greats Guitar Shorty and Smokey Wilson, and has performed with a long list of major blues artists around the country.

The velvet-voiced Nixon, whose singing recalls Jimmy Witherspoon and Billy Eckstine, was part of Nashville’s thriving blues scene in the 60’s, was a longtime member of The New Imperials, recorded for Chess Records in the 70’s and has performed with many of the top blues and R&B artists in the world.

Blind Pig Records will release the new album by the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band, entitled Numbers Game, on August 28th.

THE CASH BOX KINGS
Award-winning fan favorites, The Cash Box Kings continue their mission of carrying on the spirit of the 1940's and 50's post-war Chicago blues sound as well as the Delta blues music of the 20's and 30's.  Living Blues said they are simply "one of the best blues bands in the land."
Fronted by vocalist Oscar Wilson and harp player Joe Nosek, these illustrious torchbearers also add a bravado, energy and freshness to the mix that results in a distinctive musical experience. They showcase the music of Chess Records and Sun Records while adding a healthy dose of original music that captures the essence of early Memphis and Chicago blues sounds. As No Depression put it, "The ghosts of Muddy Waters, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins and Little Walter must be smiling."
The Cash Box Kings' new Blind Pig release, Holding Court, is currently the most played record in the country at blues radio, topping the Roots Music Report's blues radio chart for the last four weeks.  To watch their new video, please click HERE.

SHAWN HOLT AND THE TEARDROPS
Shawn Holt is the son of the late legendary blues master, Magic Slim. The high energy, hard-driving sound of the Teardrops is still alive and well with Shawn, a chip off the old block, fronting his old man's band. Shawn's booming vocal presence is more than a little reminiscent of his father's, and his guitar playing, while similar to Slim's, exhibits a broader mix of classic and contemporary influences.
The band's Blind Pig release, Daddy Told Me, won the "Best New Artist Debut" Blues Music Award, as well as the Blues Blast Music Award in the same category.

BILLY BRANCH AND THE SONS OF BLUES
Over a career spanning close to forty years now, three-time Grammy nominee Billy Branch has become one of the blues’ most eloquent spokespersons and an ardent evangelist and teacher of the blues, not to mention an award-winning veteran artist on the Chicago, national and international music scenes.
Branch will perform with his band, the Sons of Blues, at 5:00 pm on Sunday. They'll perform songs from their Blind Pig release entitled Blues Shock, a fascinating mix of daring, and full-bodied new compositions and fresh-sounding standards that followers have long savored at their live shows.  Living Blues said the CD "provides ample proof that Branch's unique blend of rootsy integrity and exploratory zeal remains potent."  To watch a video of the title track, please click HERE.

After that set, Branch will join members of Willie Dixon's family for a musical tribute to that Chicago blues icon.  Billy toured with Dixon’s All-Stars for about six years.  “I can’t over-stress how influential he was,” says Branch. “He ate, slept, talked blues all the time. He was deeply, very, very proud that he was a blues man and that his people were the inventors of blues.”

Delta Groove Music artist: Andy T - Nick Nixon Band - Livin' It Up - New release Review

I just received the newest release (June 17, 2014), Livin' It Up, from Andy T - Nick Nixon Band and it really hits the spot. Opening with Baby Right Now, a cool 12 bar number highlights Nick Nixon on vocals and Andy T with some sweet guitar riffs. On Best In Town, a Jimmy Reed like tune, Christian Dozzler steps in with a cool harp solo and Larry Van Loon provides solid piano work in support of Nick and Andy. Delbert McClinton's Livin' It Down, a light Latin twist give this track just the right amount of spice. Bassist Sam Persons adds rhythm guitar on this track and Ron Jones beefs things up a bit on sax. Jim Klinger keep a tight rhythm on drums and Nixon really does a nice job on the vocals on this track. T - Bone Walker's, My Baby Is Now On My Mind, gives Andy a really nice format to play some tasty T-Bone inspired riffs. Dossler takes the piano role on this track pushing Andy just enough to get him swinging. Very nice! Good Man is a deep Texas blues and Andy is diggin in from the first note playing some of the bluest guitar riffs on the release. Nixon has great voice and complimented by Van loon on piano, this track is perfect for highlighting his style. Excellent! One Note Shuffle is a great romp featuring Dana Robbins on sax and Van loon on B3. Andy steps up laying down some really nice riffs for a really cool, easy going instrumental. Back Down South is a low slung blues number with hot vocals from Nixon and stinging guitar riffs from Andy. Ron Jones adds a roundness to the overall track as well as a cool solo with his solid sax work. Boogie rocker, Last To Leave, features Dozzler on slick piano riffs, some hot horn work from Robbins and Andy lays down some tasty guitar riffs supporting Nixon with his powerful vocals. On Let's Say It's For Good, an easy swing track, Van Loon and Andy each lay down some really nice licks. Snake In The Grass has a funky beat and Nixon gets right in the groove. Van Loon on B3 does a really nice job and Andy plays more slashing style riffs on rhythm guitar before laying out a cool funky guitar solo grabbing it up tight. Spiritually infused, Whatever You Had You Ain't Got It No More is a really cool track and not only are Nixons vocals powerful, I really like the effects created by Jones on sax. Andy stands tall with his guitar followed by a really cool sax solo from Robbins. On R&B track, Oh Baby, the band is steppin high and Andy gets right on the top with pure style. This track is particularly well suited for Nixon's vocal style. Robbins puts up a full sax solo adding to the muster on this track. Wrapping the track is Love At First Sight, a soul style ballad, featuring heartfelt vocals by Nixon, gospel style piano work from Van loon and nice sax soloing from Dana Robbins. This is a solid release which is quite soothing.

Delta Groove Music artist: Andy T- Nick Nixon Band - Drink Drank Drunk - New release Review

I just received the highly anticipated Andy T - Nick Nixon Band release, Drink Drank Drunk and it's a scorcher! Opening with Midnight Hour, Nick Nixon shows why he is highly regarded as a top vocalist. A Texas swing blues, this track features hot guitar riffs by Andy T and Ron Jones on sax. Don't Touch Me Baby, a classic R&B style blues again spotlights Nixon on vocals with really sweet filler leads by Andy T. Andy holds back on the chance to just blow out every note in the neck and perfectly tweaks out an incredibly soulful solo. The title track, Drink Drank Drunk, has a really nice groove and features Jones again on sax. Andy plays a really tasty solo on this track  showing his flair for dynamics rather than constant filler. Have You Seen My Monkey opens with Christian Dozzler on accordion giving it a definite Louisiana flare. This is a comical track painting graphic imagery but again featuring hot riffs from Andy T on guitar and excellent vocals from Nixon. This is bound to be a crowd favorite. Dos Danos opens with Jones playing a sax melody and setting the mood for guest guitarist Anson Funderburgh to lay down a hot instrumental track with John Garza (bass), Dozzler (piano), John Street (organ) and Danny Cochran (drums). No End To The Blues opens with a hot riff from Andy playing in what I'd term as BB King style with Nixon sharing the mike with Markey. Andy plays some of the tastiest riffs on the recording on this track with Steve Mackey (bass), Kevin McKendree (piano),Larry van Loon (organ) and Jim Klingler (drums). On Hi Heel Sneakers, Funderburgh joins the crew again with some hot riffs of his own but really only in a complimentary manner to Nixon's voice. Another favorite from the recording, Life Is Too Short, finds Nixon really singing from the heart and Andy playing some of that guitar that makes you nod your head on the off beat because it just catches you in "that spot"! You Look So Good adds Brian "Hash Brown" Calway on harp and again joined by Funderburgh the band cranks out a real sweet Texas blues number. Wrapping up the recording is Ray Charles' I've Got A Woman. Not many people could pull off a Ray Charles track without it sounding stale but Nixon sounds great and the addition of Dozzler on accordion gives the song a party feel. It's a little early in the year to start to talk much of "Bman's Best of Yea"r list, but this will definitely be a candidate!

DELTA GROOVE “BLUES STIMULUS PROGRAM” WINNERS!
Delta Groove Music is very pleased to announce the participants in their first annual Blues Stimulus Program, an opportunity for blues talent around the world to become members of the successful Delta Groove Family.  Over the last decade, Delta Groove Music has set the new standard for producing, promoting, and booking exciting blues and roots music talent.  Now they’re sharing in their success by inviting emerging blues acts to submit their recordings for review, and each year Delta Groove will choose two U.S. and one foreign blues act to come on board with one of the biggest success stories in blues in this millennium!

After much careful review and painstaking consideration over the last several months, the producers and talent scouts at Delta Groove have chosen the Nashville-based Andy T and Nick Nixon Band, and Portland, Oregon’s Kevin Selfe as this year’s U.S. participants in the Blues Stimulus Program.

Guitarist Andy T and singer/guitarist Nixon are both veteran blues players who enjoyed long and successful careers on their own for years before joining forces to create one of the most dynamic and soulful blues bands in Nashville – a town with no shortage of great musicians.  Andy T’s fiery yet tasteful guitar provides the perfect backdrop to Nixon’s deeply bluesy, church-schooled vocals, an appealing combination that caught the attention of Texas blues guitar legend Anson Funderburgh, who produced and guests on their debut CD for Delta Groove.

Virginia native Kevin Selfe is one of the most exciting and tasteful young blues guitarists and singers on the scene today, with that golden combination of reverence for the masters and the fire and passion of an artist from a new generation, out to write his own chapter in the blues history books.  Selfe has been on the scene since 1997, and appeared on numerous CDs with The Fat Daddy Band and Little Roger and The Cheap Thrills.  In 2005 he formed Kevin Selfe & The Tornadoes in his native Roanoke, VA, eventually relocating to the other side of the country in Portland, OR.  Since then he’s continued to hone and perfect his own unique sound, using his mastery of traditional blues as a springboard into his own exciting blend of cutting edge attitude and original songs that speak to several generations of roots music and blues fans.

The debut CDs on Delta Groove by Andy T - Nick Nixon Band “Drink Drank Drunk”, and Kevin Selfe “Long Walk Home”, are scheduled for release by Delta Groove in February of 2013.
