Landslide Records artist: Damon Fowler & Friends - Live At The Palladium - New Relase Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live At The Palladium, by Damon Fowler & Friends and it's a smoking release. Opening with It Came Out Of Nowhere, a cool R&B infused blues track, Fowler on lead vocal and guitar is hot and heavy. I like his style and his voice. Joined by Dan Signor on keys, Justin Headley on drums, and Chuck Riley on bass, Fowler sets this one and lays his solo on the end like a pro. This is a fine opener. On Somethings Change, one of hte best Harmonica players on the planet, Jasson Ricci joins Fowler with some excellent riffs and both contributing to a energetic instrumental frenzy. Breaking into a a stretched reggae beat on Don't Feel Like Going There Today, Ricci, Fowler and Signor each have a turn at the wheel. Very nice. My favorite on the release, Tax Man, has a great blues structure ala Jeff Beck's Blues Deluxe. Fowler's vocals are excellent, coaxed along by Ricci who really lays it out there on harmonica. Fowler picks it up with tight low volume riffs but really knows how to work it, coming back with his soulful vocals. OI really like the swampy funk on Fruit Stand Lady. Fowler with Eddie Wright on guitar really sqeeze the juice out of this one. With it's double stop sound, this track is great! Wrapping the release is Sugar Shack with Fowler really laying the slide out there. After a chot solo by Signor, Fowler and Wright trade riffs, Fowler really leaning into the slide for an excellent closer.

Landslide Records - 40th Anniversary - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the newest release from Landslide Records, 40th Anniversary, a two disc compilation celebrating their 40th anniversary and a full house of great artists. Opening with Tinsley Ellis and the Heartfixers and Drivin' Woman. Ellis is a great choice to open this retrospective with his fiery guitar attack and tight rock shuffle beat. Strong opener. The Bluesbusters' track, If The Phone Don't Ring, is up next led by Little feat guitar and vocalist Paul Barrere in collaberation with Dregs keyboardist Lavitz and associated Feat personalities. This is a great track and solid addition to this release. Damon Fowler contributes Make The Best Of Your Time. Fowler was a great addition to Landslides lineup with his rugged vocal, strong rhythm and terrific slide work, I always look forward to his releases. Sean Costello was a unique talent and spectacular blues player. His contribution here is Motor Head Baby with it's slow swagger and Costello's relentless lead guitar work. If you don't know Sean, go find it now! Nappy Brown joins Ellis and the Heartfixers on Hard Luck Blues. Here you get the double whammy with Browns excellent vocals and Ellis' tasty guitar riffs, backed by strong horn work. Dave Bartholomew has a great jam on Jazz Fest in New Orleans with that funky New Orleans sound. David Earle Johnson (drums) brings a really hot Jazz Fusion sound. Partnered with John Abercrombie on guitar, Dan Wall on organ, Gary Cambell on sax these guys really fly on Route Two. Excellent! Derek Trucks Band continues in the jazz mind set with Mr. PC showcasing Trucks' world renown guitar improvisation. Mike Mattison best known for his work with Derek Trucks Band, showcases his soulful vocal work on Midnight In Harlem and it's R&B feel. Really nice. Steam Donkeys really put on the heat on Little Honky Tonks, a strong, Country and Western track with real grit. If you like this kind of music, and I do, you'll love this! Scrapomatic lays down a really hot track, Night Trains, Distant Whistles, with Mike Mattison on vocal, Paul Olsen on guitar and vocal, Dave Yoke on guitar, Ted Pecchio on bass and Tyler Greenwell on drums. Hot funky drumming, a great bass line, well blended vocals and strong lead guitar, great! Sax man Paul McCandless brings The Great Lawn, a new jazz piece featuring Steve Rodby on bass, Davidd Samuels on vibes, Ross traut on guitar and Linda Naimas on claps for an interesting instrumental diversion. Wrapping the release is Col. Bruce Hampton & The Late Bronze Age on Walking With Zambi, a driving country rocker. This is a great mix of music and a lot of hot talent on 2 cds. If you know all of the bands. it's a great mix tape and if you don't it's a great intro.

Landslide Records artist: Damon Fowler - Alafia Moon - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (March 26, 2021), Alafia Moon, from Damon Fowler and it is a healthy dose of blues rock with a plenty of slide. Opening with Live It Alone, a cool, swampy, rocker, Fowler on slide and vocal leads the way with Chuck Riley on bass, Justin Headley on drums, T.C. Carr wailing on harmonica, Mike Kach on keys, Betty Fox on backing vocals, this is a great opener. Title track, Alafia Moon is a strong, country blues ballad with a great melody and warm backing vocals. Kach's organ work gives it a rich, almost spiritual feel and backing vocals add almost a contemporary Pink Floyd feel. I really like this track with it's rich core. Light, finger picked, The Guitar, is a really cool track with just a dash of Tex-Mex. Fowler really sounds comfortable in this story telling track and it's unassuming freshness. Hip To Your Trip is a modern funky blues, built around a framework of Broonzy's Key To The Highway. With a great bass line, hot slide and funky drums, the only thing I don't like about it is over to quickly. Nice! Another favorite on the release is Taxman, a slow blues with some of Fowler's best vocals on the release and really sweet slide work to boot! Fowler plays some really tasty lead over slide on this track giving it a deep blues feel. Excellent! Funky rocker, Wanda, is guaranteed to get you dancing in your seat if not on your feet. This is a hot track and could be the radio track for the release. Wrapping the release is hot shuffle < Kicked His Ass Out with hot, Gatemouth Brown like picking, rolling into full slide work under super backing vocals. Excellent closer.

Landslide Records artist: Geoff Achison - Sovereign Town - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Sovereign Town, from Geoff Achison and it's quite good. Opening with folk rocker, Skeleton Kiss, Achison, on guitar and vocal crafts a definitely radio worthy track with solid backing by Andrew Fry on bass, Dave Clark on drums, Liam Kealy on Hammond and John McNamara on backing vocals. Title track, Sovereign Town has a real nice feel with rich warm backing vocals and a blend of finger picked and slide guitar by Achison supporting his distinctive vocals. Very nice. With a light jazzy touch, Misha Bella has a cool George Benson touch but maintaining Achison style country runs. Kealy's Hammond solo balances the track nicely making it one of my favorites on the release. Another particularly interesting track is World of Blue with fluid delivery, a strong melody, warm backing vocals, nice slide and just the right amount of Hammond. Excellent! Instrumental track, Hand of Faith, has a very soothing melody and with firm yet delicate articulate, Achison delivers this exceptional track. Wrapping the release is instrumental, Coolbardie Sunrise with tight fingerpicking in a traditional country blues style. Excellent closer for a cool release.

Landslide Records artist: Webb Wilder & The Beatnecks - Powerful Stuff! - New Relese review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Powerful Stuff!, from Webb Wilder & The Beatnecks and it's a high energy rocker. Opening with Make That Move, Wilder on lead vocal and guitar sets a quick pace and euphoric guitar mood. Backed by Jimmy Lester on drums, Donny Roberts on guitars and Kelley Looney on bass, this is a cool opener. Lost In the Shuffle is a cool "shuffling rocker" with a solid melody and with greasy guitar riffs has just the right edge to make a great radio track. My favorite on the release, I'm Wild About You Baby, is a tense rocker with a rockabilly beat and real nice slide work by Wilder. Super. Another high energy rocker, Nutbush City Limits features a great driving beat and stinging guitar riffs, pushed by Blakely on bass and Lester on drums. Revenooer Man is a great rock and roller with a country twist. No missing the chance to get a few country style riffs and keeping the Blaster style vocals, this track is quite cool. Wrapping the release is Little Richard's Lucille, with a strong driving guitar rhythms and understated drums by Lester. Wilder really gets his guitar flailing with wild bends and spontaneous. A great rocker and a super closer.

Webb Wilder & the Beatnecks Set to Unleash Some "Powerful Stuff!" April 27 on Album of Previously-Unreleased Tracks Recorded from 1985-1993 Via Landslide Records

Webb Wilder & the Beatnecks Set to Unleash Some Powerful Stuff! April 27 on Album of Previously-Unreleased Tracks Recorded from 1985-1993 Via Landslide Records

NASHVILLE, TN - Landslide Records is excited to announce an April 27 street date for its next release, Powerful Stuff!, by veteran rock and rollers, Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks.  Since 1985, Wilder and his cohorts have been cranking out their own brand of rootsy Rock and ROLL throughout the USA and the world. The band’s energy and intensity is well exemplified by the heretofore unreleased, vintage tracks contained on Powerful Stuff! A potent mixture of roots rock, Americana, blues, and British influences, the album primarily features the “original” Beatnecks: Wilder on lead vocals and guitar; Donny “The Twangler” Roberts, guitar and vocals; Denny “Cletus” Blakely, bass and vocals; and Jimmy Lester, drums.

Special guests featured on these rare, unissued tracks include the legendary Al Kooper on organ, acclaimed guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely, John Mellencamp and Storyville), and renowned bass player Willie Weeks (Eric Clapton, Gregg Allman).

Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks will perform at the official CD release party for Powerful Stuff! on Sunday, April 29, starting at 7 PM at Nashville’s Exit/In, a venue where several of the tracks on the new CD were originally recorded live in 1986. The current band lineup includes Webb Wilder – guitar, vocals; Jimmy Lester – drums; Tom Comet – bass; and Bob Williams - guitar.

Powerful Stuff! presents timeless live and studio tracks produced by R.S. “Bobby” Field, a founding member of The Beatnecks. Recorded between 1985 and 1993, the material is split equally between original songs and distinctive cover renditions, all of which inexplicably escaped release back in the day.

The title track, “Powerful Stuff,” written by Field, is an unreleased Beatnecks original that stayed in the can after The Fabulous Thunderbirds picked it up and made it one of their biggest hits.  Other original tunes appearing for the first time include “New Day,” a prescient and timely composition by Webb and Terry Anderson, and a popular concert favorite, “Animal Lover.” The band adds its own distinctive flair to raucous covers of songs by Levi and the Rockats, Sam and Dave, Johnny Paycheck, Little Richard, and Tina Turner.

“‘Lost In The Shuffle,’ a tune on the new album, kind of suggests what happened to those tracks,” said Wilder, who is thrilled to finally see them available for his “loving public” and beyond. Compiled and remixed (where possible) by Wilder and George “The Tone Chaperone” Bradfute at his Tone Chaparral studio in Madison, Tennessee, Powerful Stuff! was culled from dozens of recordings that had been carefully stored in a Nashville facility for over 30 years.

A native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and a member of the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame, Wilder and his friend since junior high, Bobby Field (producer for several earlier records), crafted their signature brand of "Mid-Atlantic" (British and American) rock and roll into their often double-time tunes which separated Wilder’s music from the pack and boasted classic influences from both sides of the pond. The band’s 1986 debut album, It Came from Nashville, a brazenly rocking bar-band rave-up that’s also available from Landslide Records, was recently named one of the top 50 all-time best Southern Rock albums by Paste Magazine.

Jumping Jack Records artist: Delta Moon - Cabbagetown - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Cabbagetown, by Delta Moon and they have a rocking sound with blues influences. Opening with Rock and Roll Girl, Tom Gray on vocal and lap steel, Mark Johnson on vocal and lap steel create a signature sound backed by Franher Joseph on vocal and bass, and Marlon Patton on drums. With a swampy feel, Just Lucky I Guess features Steven Stills like vocals and swift resonator guitar soloing. Kicking it up a few, Coolest Fools has a country rock/pop feel with a cool hook. Tandem slide work maintains a country rockin' feel throughout and nicely blended vocals give this track additional appeal. Refugees stands alone for me as the absolute best track on the release. With it's solid one bass line, slide work and spoken lead vocal, this track just rides the super groove. Excellent!  A modern take on Son House's Death Letter is totally fresh and unique. Very cool with a thumping bass and cool harp work from Jon Liebman. Title track, Cabbagetown is a cool call and response acoustic blues instrumental featuring instrumental retort between  Gray on resonator and harp and Johnson on guitar. Wrapping the release is a powerful blues rocker, Sing Together, with flavors of CCR and Stills. With rich backing vocals by Kyshona Armstrong and slick slide work, this is a super closer for a really cool release.

Landslide Records artist: Geoff Achison - Another Mile Another Minute - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release; Another Mile, Another Minute; from Geoff Achison and it's quite good. Opening with High Wire, Achison keeps the beat simple and with Richard Tankard on keys, Gerry Pantazis on drums and Roger McLachian on bass, lays down some real nice riffs on guitar backed by Susie Ahern on vocal. With it's reggae/pop feel, Working My Way Back Home has a real interesting sound, with a solid bass line, cool organ feel and colorful guitar work.  Shuffle track, I'm Gonna Ride features cool harp work by Chris Wilson and pure rock riffs from Achison. An infectious bass line by McLachian on really sets off A New Bad Habit and Sax by Paul Williamson and trumpet by Jack Howard give it a great backdrop for Achison's cool, stylist vocals.  Title track, Another Mile Another Minute has a smooth R&B feel with solid lead vocal by Achison and warm backing by Hannah Harwood, Steve Romig as well as the smooth horns of Williamson and Howard. Soul track, Dreaming I'm Awake is euphoric and has one of the most sensitive guitar solos on the release. Very nice. High stepper, Sum Peeples Got All Da Fonk is a playful track with a solid groove, and all the fixins for some funky music...organ, bass and drums. Very cool.  Make My Stand is another track with a bouncy bottom but with the inclusion of slick slide work... a jazzier approach. Wrapping the release is acoustic number, Front Porch Farewell. With the precision of a surgeon, Achison finger picks his guitar country style by with the touch of a lullaby. A very nice closer for a cool release.

Landslide Records artist: Webb Wilder - Mississippi Moderne - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, Mississippi Moderne, from Webb Wilder and it's super! Opening with a short intro, Stones In My Pathway, is a super heavy, swampy, bluesy track. If this was recorded in the early times of Son House or Lightnin' it would still sound gritty and super honest. Excellent! Rough and Tumble Guy is up next, a boogie woogie rocker with a great rhythm track. Wilder takes the lead on some rowdy guitar backed by Jimmy Lester on drums, Tom Comet rompin the bass and Bob Williams on guitar. Excellent! If It Ain't Broke, (Don't Fix It) has a much more rural and laid back feel but with just a touch of funk...boogie if you will. Backing vocals by the McCrary Sisters, Williams and Comet give it a homey feel but Wilder's vocals keep it edgy. Very nice! Only A Fool has a euro pop sound with an easy hook. Not the voice but the style, think the kinks, Todd or E. Costello. The Kinks, I Gotta Move, maintains a real 60's rock sound but with a separate signature from the original. This is a quick paced rocker with wicked guitar rock and a straight ahead drumming. Too Much Sugar For A Nickel is a great pop rocker. If I just heard the track out of context and was asked who wrote it I'd Guess Frank Black...or is that Black Francis (Or Ray and Dave). In any case, I really like it. Very nice with clever guitar riffs surrounding a slick hook and a tight execution. Conway Twitty's Lonely Blue Boy is a super low slung blues rocker. Pushed with it's country honesty, and low keys but really nicely styled guitar riffs, this track is over the top. Mississippi garage band, The One Way Street penned, Yard Dog see's plenty of daylight here with solid delivery, raggedy vocals and tight drumming. Very smart! I'm Not Just Anybody's Fool is really a nice ballad. A strong melody, Micah Hulscher lays out warm organ backing and a melodic guitar work makes this one of the strongest statements on the release. Very nice! Otis Rush's It Takes Time, has a super walking bass line but uptempo from Rush's original. With an almost jazz feel, it has new life in it's sail. You've been waiting for me to say, and he cut's the guitar loose and here it is. Wilder doesn't go nuts but he does play some really crisp, Otis Rush/Peter Green inspired and nicely executed riffs. Super! Frankie Lee Sims' Lucy Mae Blues has a primitive feel but with some more modern sounds creating a eerie tension. Wilder's vocals in echo with basic jangly blues guitar riffs, hi hat and tamborine and snare make this stripped down blues rocker special! Charlie Rich's Who Will The Next Fool Be has an easy country swing feel. Wilder's vocals morph from track to track and continuously surprise me. In this case, rich not thin but an almost Willie Nelson feel. A super nice groove with Hulscher on piano and organ and cal and response guitar work compliments the vocal lead making it one of my favorites on the release. Jimmy Reed's I'm Gonna Get My Baby has a solid boogie feel with Bob Williams adding some slick slide work over a nice rhythm guitar and bass line from George Bradfute. Super groove. Wrapping the release is the return to the beginning and a full blown Stones In My Pathway. This is a powerful recording eliciting the gritty nature of original early blues musicians. It is an excellent conclusion to a strong release of blues based music.

Webb Wilder IS "Mississippi Moderne" on New CD Coming September 25 from Landslide Records

Webb Wilder IS Mississippi Moderne on New CD Coming September 25 from Landslide Records

NASHVILLE, TN - Landslide Records is proud to announce a September 25th release date for Mississippi Moderne, the all new album from veteran roots rocker, Webb Wilder. A 2011 inductee into the Mississippi Musicians Hall Of Fame, Wilder has crafted a lively recording that pays homage to his home state through a striking set of originals, coupled with distinctive cover renditions that stretch from tunes by the Kinks to Charlie Rich and Jimmy Reed. Given superb backing from his highly accomplished and longtime bandmates, the Beatnecks (Tom Comet, bass, Bob Williams, guitar, and Jimmy Lester, drums), Mississippi Moderne captures the full flavor of Wilder’s raucous style, based on his singular baritone vocal delivery, solid guitar, a tight, punchy rhythmic foundation and some surprising touches of the heart added in as well.

Tracked at Studio 19 (originally Scotty Moore’s Music City Recorders) in Nashville and produced by Wilder, Tom Comet, Bob Williams and Joe McMahan, Mississippi Moderne represents the first new Webb Wilder album since 2009, and it shows that the man has, without question, furthered his charismatic singing style while maintaining a strong group of musicians who are well-schooled in cranking out Wilder’s unique brand of energized rock and roll music. The package also showcases Wilder’s compelling ability to write catchy melodies and lyrics, either on his own or with notable co-writers Dan Penn, John Hadley and Patrick Sweany.

The Hattiesburg, Mississippi, native first hit nationally in 1986 with the now iconic classic, It Came from Nashville, and ever since he has confounded a slew of fans and critics attempting to define and categorize his style. As 20th Century Guitar Magazine noted, Wilder is “a master at scrambling the sounds, songs and threads of country, blues, British rock, rockabilly, and the freedom and emotion of soul music.”  Wilder has always described his sound as simply “a roots band for rock fans and a rock band for roots fans.  On Mississippi Moderne, we’ve kept some of our trademark craziness, but there’s also a lot of roots solidity and some balladry to boot.”

To celebrate Mississippi Moderne, Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks will appear in Nashville on September 25th for a CD release party at the Basement East. On September 30 in Franklin, Tennessee, Webb will perform as part of a Music City Roots Benefit Concert for Tommy Womack that also includes Jason & the Scorchers, Todd Snider and Will Kimbrough & Friends at the Factory (www.musiccityroots.com). And on September 28 at 7:00 PM Central Time, Webb will be the featured interview guest on the Roots Radio Hour, streaming live on the Music City Roots app and WHPY 94.5 Hippie Radio (www.hippieradio945.com).

In addition, a full slate of bookings in the United States and overseas will follow that feature Webb Wilder in both a solo setting (including shows as special guest for Dave & Phil Alvin) as well as full-out band shows with the dynamic Beatnecks.

Landslide Records artist: Tinsley Ellis - Get It! - New Release Review

I just got a copy of the newest Tinsley Ellis release, Get It! and it's really strong! Ellis has put together a 10 track all instrumental recording and he demonstrates that you can say a lot without uttering a word. Opening with Front Street Freeze, Ellis cranks up the funk accompanied by Kevin McKendree on keys, Lynn Williams on drums and Ted Pecchio on bass. Ellis plays smokin guitar that he is known for and adds a little Albert Collins sting. Sassy Strat is another track with a funky bottom. Speaking with his own guitar voice and a bit of wah, Ellis takes a Beck, lay back and let it come to me approach on his melodic lead. McKendree keeps the flame hot with Billy Preston like richness. The Milky Way is a very solitude track with quiet drums and organ on the bottom and single line leads not unlike those seen from Dutch guitar great Jan Akkerman. This is a really nice track with a strong melody and smart use of the fretboard. Detour is a twistin' Texas infused surf track with great guitar riffs, double stops, reverb and effects. Is there beach in Texas... damn straight! This track should see a lot of airplay due to it's refreshing sound and cool beat. Anthem For A Fallen Hero is a classic guitar ballad... the kind of stuff that has made Bonamassa and Moore rich and famous. It is nicely constructed and crisply played. Get It! is a hot Texas style loping blues track with great guitar sounds. McKendree adds just the right amount of keys to Williams drumming to give Ellis a great platform to lay down the goods. This is one of the hottest tracks on the release! Fuzzbuster is a blues rock reminding me quite a bit of ZZ Top in attack but with some real great fuzzy guitar riffs. McKendree has the piano rolling and Ellis doesn't hold back on this track at all. This is definitely one not to miss with Williams keeping you on the path with simple solid beat structure. Freddy's Midnight Dream is another guitar ballad but this time with a country twist really calling to mind Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton or young Arlen Roth in composition. This is a great track with layers of key work paving the way for Ellis to show his mastery of soul, blues and country all at once. Berry Tossin' has a bit of Chuck Berry flavor mixed into a basic 12 bar structure as thought by Freddie King and then well digested in technicolor by Ellis. McKendree plays some particularly cool piano riffs on this track as well so take note. Catalunya crosses another bridge altogether... David Gilmore's brother born in Atlanta, and jammed with Santana? Ellis takes from what he hears and does an excellent job of creating his own sound from bits of life. On this track with it's Latin rhythm and searing guitar riffs, Ellis creates a sound unique to him. It is an excellent conclusion to a very strong blues guitar release. You like guitar? You like Blues? This is a real good release!

Landslide Records artist: Sean Costello - At His Best Live - New release review

I just received the new release of Sean Costello's unreleased live music recorded live in the US and Europe between 2000 and 2007. This first ever completely live album by Costello includes 11 tracks which have not been included on any of his prior releases.
This release is particularly strong and reminds us just how great a musician Sean was before his untimely death in April of 2008.
This release runs the gamut of blues styles displayed by Costello from the shuffling sound and rhythmic syncopation of T-bone Walker on "Blue Shadows" and articulation of Gatemouth Brown on Lowell Fulsoms "Reconsider Baby" or the "The Humbuckle". He also demonstrates further his diversity on jazzed/funked up soul tunes "Check it Out" and "Change My Mind". He demonstrates his renown feel on "All Your Love" and Jonnie Taylor's "Doin' My Own Thing". A few times throughout the recording I detected a deep raspiness in his voice that I don't recall hearing before.

The entire recording is very strong but you have to hold on during "Motorhead Baby" cause the soloing is outrageous.

A great ending selected for the recording is "Lucille"... Little Richard's landmark song. This is one you can't miss! It it doesn't get you moving...you're dead!!!

A portion of the royalties from the sale of this "At His Best Live" will benefit the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bi-Polar Research.
