Overton Music artist: Russ Green - Stone Cold - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Stone Cold , from Russ Green , and it's a driving blues rocker. Opening with Lint Redux , you are immediately in the middle of a swampy blues with modern effects. With a firm foot stomp by Felix Pollard on drums and Vic Jackson on bass Russ Green on harmonica and vocals really has the earthy feel. Giles Corey on slide gives the track great grease and Green's harp work is strong. Excellent opener. 12 Feet of Water opens with a terrific harmonica aria before grinding into a super drum driven romp. With the feel that I can only describe as Hill Country , Green delivers such soulful vocals, comforted by Joe Monroe on keys, this track just grabs you. Green's harmonica is like a shuddering wind blowing through you with the thumping bass of Vic Jackson and Vince Agwada on guitar. Excellent! Easy going shuffle, Nobody Knows has a smooth, supple melody with backing acoustic guitar, minimal drum work and melodic ha...

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Universal Music Group artist: Nine Below Zero - Third Degree - New Release Review

I just received the most recent release, Third Degree, from Nine Below Zero, and it's quite entertaining. This release is made up of two sessions, Third Degree Original Release: Simon Boswell Sessions and Glyn Johns' Third Degree Alternative Production: Recorded At Turn Up-Down Studios. Opening with 11+11, 9 Below Zero is full force into alt rock with bright pop vocals. Wipe Away Your Kiss continues in the pop rock vein firmly establishing this band as a pop rock machine. Why Can't We Be What We Want To Be shows flecks of the earlier work with hints of harp and guitar but it's full ahead pop rock. Tearful Eye has the hook and the beat. This is the best track on the release with strong melodic feel. True Love Is A Crime gets a little bit of the punk edge but retains the polish of a pop band. A cool rocker. Sugarbeat really makes power pop it's motto. A strong pop track it is the catchiest track on the release. Easy Street SE17 has a bit of ska to it reatining it's pop flavor. You Can't Say Yes and You Can't Say No hits the rock highway as a closer for side one of this 2 disc release. With all guns firing but retaining a lot of melody and hook, Nine Below Zero is a full fledged pop band. The second disc, Glyn Johns' Alternative Production has a bit more edge and spontaneity. Adding three additional tracks, Why Don't You Try Me Tonight, Mama Talk To Your Daughter and Johnny Weekend the band not only gives the release a totally different flavor but also creates a lot more intensity from a rockers standpoint.
