I just received a copy of the newest release, Michissippi Mick , from Mick Kolassa and it's got a lot of personality. Opening with New Beale Street Blues , vocalist/guitarist Mick Kolassa plays it easy but spunky with a nice rolling blues track featuring Eric Hughes on harp. Blues Are All Around You is a blues rocker featuring particularly stiff guitar riffs from Jeff Jensen backed by Chris Stephenson on organ, Bill Ruffino on bass and Doug McMinn on drums. Classic blues track, The Letter , has a slow easy pace and Kolassa and backing vocalist Reba Russell do a really nice job reworking this track. Stephenson really fills out the spiritual nature created by the vocalists. Nice job! One of personal favorites on the release, Reefer Man , has a ramblin' country sound with a light bouncy feel. Harvey Dalton Arnold Releases Outlaw March 4th!  HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (February 26, 2014) - Outlaw , the debut solo album from Harvey Dalton Arnold, offers a new take on traditional blues music. The album will be released March 4th, and a CD Release Party will be held at the High Tide Lounge in Carolina Beach on March 1st. Harvey Arnold was the left-handed bass player for the Outlaws from 1976 to 1980. He was known for writing songs, taking the lead on vocals, and providing harmonies for the Southern rockers. Surprisingly, he did not grow up in a musical family. I just received the most recent release, Cheat'n Man from Patti Parks . Parks is a dynamic singer with a tight band. Opening with Baby Don't You Know a swing tune, with healthy hor work from Gerry Youngman (trumpet), Nick Salamone (tenor sax), Bob Miers (trombone) and Paul Vanacore (bari sax). On slower paced ballad, Happy You're Mine , Salamone again steps up with to fluid sax runs. On boogie track, Back Off , Sam Guarino, Carol Jean Swist and Pete Holguin add cool backing vocals and Charles Buffamonte lays down a nice guitar solo. Carol Jean Swist adds a nice bed of piano and Mike Phelps keeps the botton particularly tight on drums. It Ain't Right is a slower Texas style blues with some of the hottest guitar work on the release. Buffamonte really rips it up on this track... take note. Siblings Danielle, Kris and Nick Schnebelen grew up with the Blues. Their parents, Bob and Lisa, were active in the thriving Kansas City Blues scene, playing in local bands and competing in the Kansas City Blues Challenge. Bob and Lisa’s band didn’t make it to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis — but their kids did. When TUF arrived in Memphis for the 2008 IBC they were followed by huge, wildly enthusiastic throngs of hometown supporters, eager to cheer for their favorite musical family. And when TUF took First Place in the competition and Nick won the Albert King award for best guitarist, it was a sweet victory for the Schnebelen family and for Kansas City itself. I just received the newest release (February 18, 2014), Somewhere Else , from Lydia Loveless . This new release is quite pleasing with a pop country style but more meat than you would expect from the genre. Opening with Really Wanna See You , an uptempo rocker, Loveless has a sweet "Stevie Nicks" like voice and the band is quite tight. Wine Lips , a slower but mid tempo track has strong radio potential waith just a pinch of country in the guitar riffs setting it apart. Chris Isaak is a real nice track and showcases Loveless' vocal style quite well. With just a tinge of retro styling this is one of the best tracks on the release. To Love Somebody has light airy feel sound and a clear hook. Another track that could easily garner strong airplay. Hurts So Bad has a Philly soul with pop country style but with distinctive Loveless touches making it one of the most memorable tracks on the release. I've just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Nothin' But Blood , by Scott H. Biram and it's really cool. Opening with Slow and Easy , Biram finger picks his way through a authentic western (cowboy) sounding track with not only clever dexterity but with an authoritative voice. Gotta Get To Heaven has a springy country feel with acoustic guitar and tambourine. Country riffs are inserted on electric guitar and Biram rattles off lyrics in a rhythmic pattern. Sounding like he's playing the track just for me and possibly a small intimate crowd gives the song a real personal feel. Alcohol Blues has a rockier feel with gruff vocals. You can just hear the the track getting ready to burst through the grind of the electric guitar and amp. A one man band, overdubbed electric guitar for soloing is necessary but cool.
