I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Hard Garden Music artist: Hard Garden - Blue Yonder - New Release Review

Image
I just received the new release (January 7, 2014), Blue Yonder , from Hard Garden and they are putting their own contemporary spin on the blues. Opening with I Feel Evil , a shuffle track with cool harp by Michael Wilde and vocals by Son Jack Jr. Son House's Depot Blues get a bit more of a light upbeat rock tempo but still holding onto blues roots. Hey Now Mary has a definite hill country blues sound with authentic style fingering. And simple rhythmic percussion. Cool track. Papa's In The Juke Joint maintains the primitive guitar sound but with a more modern drum rhythm. Vocals on this track have a modern spoken rhythm and slide guitar and harp give it a fuller dynamic. A cool electric guitar solo on this track is also particularly interesting. I Can Tell goes full force into a "smooth" Latin rhythm. This track has the most potential for airplay on the release. The Valley has a different vocal style from the rest of the release and actually puts me in mind of...

Delmark 60 Years of Blues - New release review

Image
I just received a new release, Delmark 60 Years of Blues and it's terrific! Opening with Studebaker John's Maxwell Street Kings and When They Played The Real Blues . John on harp, guitar and vocals drives a hard Chicago line on this super track from Kingsville Jukin'. Really hot! Following this track is Junior Wells and Rock me Baby from the Southside Blues Jam sessions. With Otis Spann on piano, Louis Meyers on guitar, and Wells on vocal and harp, this is a band that is hard to beat. Wells is on top of his game and Spann is one of my all time favorite blues pianists so this track is primo! Lindsey Alexander plays Raffle Ticket with Mike Wheeler on guitar Roosevelt Purifoy laying down some excellent piano. Alexander leads a tight ship on this track released on Been There Done That. Magic Sam plays I Don't Want No Woman , from his Live At The Advant Garde. His guitar work is finely articulated and his vocals are inspired. This track is swinging! Quintus McCormic...

Fabbo! Boffo! Smasho! - Halley DeVestern Band - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release (January 7, 2014), Fabbo! Boffo! Smasho !, from The Halley Devestern Band and they have their own power sound. Opening with horn infused funky pop track, Muscle Memory , the band sets a dance grove and Halley immediately shows influences of Joplin. Kangaroo Momma has a real nice strut to it with solid lead vocals and cool backing vocals. The band is made up of a who's who, Halley (vocal) of Big Brother; David Patterson (guitar) of Shawn Mullins; Rick Kulsar (drums) of The Zen Tricksters, Toasters and Mickey Dolenz; and Tom Heinig (bass) of Lamont Cranston and Mill City. Blues track Money Ain't Time is a direct hit from Big Brother's song back with Edd Kelhoff on organ (very nice Edd) and Halley demonstrating a strong sense of Joplin's phrasing and feel. Tore Up (From The Floor Up) is a cool composition which really sounds like it's from the Frank Zappa song book. Mark Mancini plays some cool funky keys on this track adding a ...

Walter “ Wolfman” Washington and the Roadmasters – Live at dba New Orleans - New Release Review - Stilladog - Guest Writer

Image
As soon as I heard that Walter “Wolfman” Washington had a new live album out I had to get a copy. I have been a fan of his ever since Bman turned me on to him back in 1991. But back in October I met and made friends with him out on Duval Street in Key West. This album was recorded shortly after and was released on November 21, 2013 at the dba music club on Frenchmen Street in the Marginy. The Roadmasters consist of Jack Cruz, bass; Wayne Maureau, drums; Antonio Gambrell, trumpet; and the hardest working tenor man I know of, Jimmy Carpenter, sax. This is exactly the same band he had with him on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise when I last saw him. The horns of Gambrell and Carpenter are a frequent feature on nearly every song and they are fantastic. Better on this record than I remember on the cruise. The album starts off with an instrumental introduction, Funkyard , from the Funk Is In The House album. It’s a tune that features solos by both horn men as well Walter ...

Geoff Whitehorn

Image
Geoffrey Charles 'Geoff' Whitehorn (born 29 August 1951, London, England) is a guitarist and singer-songwriter, who has played as a member of If, Crawler and Procol Harum. In August 1973, Whitehorn joined the pioneering British jazz-rock band, If, in what was their third and final line-up, appearing on their last two albums, Not Just Another Bunch of Pretty Faces (1974) and Tea Break Over, Back On Your 'Eads (1975). During that period, he recorded his first solo album, Whitehorn (1974, Stateside), featuring fellow If members Dick Morrissey and Cliff Davies. This was followed by two largely instrumental solo albums, Big in Gravesend and Geoff Who? which he also re-recorded and expanded as Geoff Who? 2002. In 1976-1979, Whitehorn played in the band Crawler (formerly known as Back Street Crawler), replacing the band's founder Paul Kossoff after the latter's death. Geoff also played as lead guitarist with Chuck Farley with Steve Simpson, Boz Burrell, Poly Palmer and...

MORBLUS stands for American Blues made in Italy and captures the audience with its exceptional sound of Funk, Blues, Rhythm & Blues and Soul. The band founded in 1991 has a wide repertoire of blues classics, modern soul pieces and original compositions. Its power and groove, infused with its many musical influences, carries its audiences away more than any other act in the European music scene. In Spain, the Netherlands and even in the Home of Blues, the USA, MORBLUS has made its mark as the most fiery Funky Blues Export from Italy. In performing with various international Blues artists, the MORBLUS sound has matured to an individual and distinctive Blues that grabs the fans right from the start. When lead singer and guitarist Morbioli leaves the stage and with his Telecaster dives into the audience, everybody shakes a l...
