Ruf Records artist: Cyril Neville - Magic Honey - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Magic Honey , from Cyril Neville and it's great! Cyril always puts on a super show but this release just has that something special. Opening with the title track, Magic Honey , Nevil puts his own spin on the You Don't Love Me feel of track and it's really cool! Aside from the solid vocals and rhythmic beat that you have to expect from Neville, there is some screaming harp work and also a crisp guitar solo from Cranston Clements. On Dr John's Swamp Funk , a funky New Orleans style track features nice bass lines from Carl Dufrene and super keys from Dr John and Allen Toussaint complimenting Cyril on vocal. Mean Willie Green lays down a nice drum line. David Z opens Something's Got A Hold On Me with some searing guitar riffs and Neville sings some of his strongest vocals on the release over a bluesy melody. Excellent! Another Man has a light pop/island sound with Latin percussion feel. Again Toussaint is outstanding on keys and C...

Flashback to 1980 -- During his maiden session for Don and David Was, Randy Jacobs meets Sweetpea Atkinson on a cold night in the Motor City at Sound Suite Studio (the recording home of the fledgling band Was (Not Was). The connection was immediate and a bond was forged between the two artists. Their combined talents would help Was (Not Was) become a successful act during the 80's and into the early 90's cumulating with the worldwide hit "Walk The Dinosaur" co-written by Jacobs. After their European tour with Dire Straits in 1992 the Was Band went on hiatus and Randy started writing songs for a solo project while earning a living in Los Angeles playing with or recording for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, BB King, Seal, Paula Abdul, Kris Kristofferson, Ofra Haza, Tears For Fears, Warren Hill and others. It's A Little Too Late - Lee Delray

Image
With over a quarter of a century under his belt and 14 years fronting his own band, Lee is causing quite the buzz on a national and international level. In 2013, Lee Delray headlined the 4th Annual Blues Bash in Hackettstown, N.J., along with Blues/Rock Legend Johnny Winter. He was also invited on as supporting act for “Superharp” James Cotton at The Stanhope House, N.J. Lee’s cd “570-BLUES” is getting airplay in over 15 countries and over 40 US states, and rapidly building a worldwide fan base. Lee’s style has been called a ferocious mix of Albert King, Albert Collins, and Luther Allison. He has also been compared to more modern artists like Tommy Castro, Nick Moss, Joe Moss, Chris Cain, and Bryan Lee. If you enjoy any of these artists you will love Lee Delray. Born in Florida and raised in N.Y.C., Lee started playing guitar at age 11 after finding an old flat top in a back corner of his garage. Lee gave up the guitar one year later for the drums after seeing a Krupa/Rich s...

Texas Pete Mayes

Image
Pete Mayes (March 21, 1938 – December 16, 2008) was an American Texas blues singer, guitarist and songwriter. He was variously known as Texas Pete Mayes and T-Bone Man; the latter a reference to his guitar playing resembling his hero, T-Bone Walker. Mayes' made few recordings but For Pete's Sake was released in 1998, nearly fifty years after Mayes first appeared on stage. It was his most widely distributed recording, and won the Blues Foundation's W.C. Handy Award for 'comeback album of the year' Floyd Davis Mayes was born and raised in Double Bayou, Texas. The town was home to a dance hall, which played a significant part in Mayes' life. As a child he learned with a cheap guitar without a full set of strings and practiced for hours each day. Mayes was aged 16 when T-Bone Walker invited him on stage to perform. In the early 1950s, Mayes played with various bands at his local dance hall. After several years he led his own group, opening the show for touring m...

Delmark artist: Toronzo Cannon - John The Conquer Root - New Release Review

Image
I just received a copy of the new release, John The Conquer Root by Toronzo Cannon and it's powerful. Opening with The title track, John The Conquer Root , this release is balls to the wall! With a percussion bottom (Brian "BJ" Jones) worthy of Bonzo himself, this track is heavy and laden with hot guitar riffs and gripping vocals from Cannon. Excellent. I've Been Doing Fine has more of a Chicago blues style with organ by Roosevelt Purifoy and bass from Dave Forte. Cold World is a much more contemporary R&B style number with horns from Kenny Anderson (trumpet), Norman Palm (trombone), Dudley Owens (sax), Jerry Di Muzio (sax) and backing vocals by Kay Reed, Theresa Davis and Vanessa Holmes. Cannon takes the opportunity to lay out some tasty riffs but this some is all about the groove. Gentle Reminder is a rock blues track with a stiff driving funk belly. Cannon uses great vocal phrasing on this track and answers his call with Texas style stinging guitar riffs...

(NEW EP) Yonder Mountain String Band Releases "YMSB EP '13" (Oct. 8, 2013)

Image
Yonder Mountain String Band "YMSB EP '13" (Frog Pad Records: October 8, 2013) Bluegrass is a music steeped in tradition, but over the past decade and a half -- much of it spent on the road -- Yonder Mountain String Band has spearheaded a renegade movement to rewrite the definition of the genre. Alongside other neo-bluegrass friends such as Leftover Salmon , Sam Bush , Bela Fleck , The Travelin' McCourys , and Railroad Earth , YMSB has thoroughly revitalized and contemporized bluegrass and introduced it to many thousands of new fans. Rolling Stone said that YMSB "liberates bluegrass' hot-shit riffing and blue-sky harmonies from its hidebound formalism," while Paste Magazine wrote, "The Yonder Mountain boys have found a formula that works: take rootsy bluegrass influences, add in some rock 'n' roll, and seek out an adventurous audience." That adventurous audience will eagerly embrace YMSB EP '13 , to be re...
