Hot Monkey Love are a blues band with a rock edge that combines the heart and soul of blues artists such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and John Lee Hooker, with the groove and vocals of British blues-rock bands like The Rolling Stones and Free. Band members have performed, recorded and toured with Bryan Adams, David Johansen, Noel Redding, Bon Jovi, Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. Now and again I feel the need to present releases that I have collected on my own which have not been sent to me for review by record companies or artists. In this case, Ry Cooder 's Pull Up Some Dust & Sit Down . Cooder opens the release with a classic No Banker's Left Behind . This is a great social commentary done in civil war/county fashion and could just as easily be from one of his early depression era releases. With military drumming and acoustic stringed instruments, it's a treat to the ears. Next up is a Tex Mex El Corrido De Jesse James .This track has the very traditional waltz rhythm with horns and accordion. Superb! Dirty Chateau is a melancholy ballad with a sweet melody and warm harmonies. Cooder plays some characteristic slide work with strings and this track is a bit more polished than I typically expect from the slide master. I just received the newest release (September 17, 2013), Road Dog's Life , from Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King and it may be their best yet! Opening with Big Money Sonny , King tells the story sounding more and more like Curtis Mayfield (a high compliment from me) and playing a high stepping R&B style blues track, Kubek plays some really nice riffs joined by Willie J Campbell on bass and Jimi Bott on drums. On Come On In , King plays a cool double stop rhythm under the melody and Kubek slips in some crisp blues riffs making this a cool track. On Nobody But You , a cool shuffle tune, Randy Chortkoff joins on vocals and Kim Wilson trades riffs with him on harp. On the title track, Road Dog's Life , the band sets up a more straight forward blues rock track with riffs traces to the Yardbirds. Kubeck steps forward and spits some hot riffs on the guitar adding quite a different flavor for a nicely rounded track. On one of my personal favorites on the release, K9 Blues ...

Mike Henderson was born in Independence, Missouri, just outside Kansas City. He grew up in a household humming with music and he’s grateful to his mother for spinning the records of everyone from bluesman John Lee Hooker to big band leader Tommy Dorsey as she did her housework. Listening to Top 40 radio in the 60’s opened Mike’s ears, too. “That was the old Top 40,” says Mike, “there was Slim Harpo, Ray Price, Ray Charles, and The Beatles and everybody was on one station. That’s what you heard. So, I grew up hearing a really wide variety.” Beginning with the harmonica at the age of five and graduating to guitar at around the age of twelve or thirteen, Henderson dove head first into music. I just received a copy of the newest release (September 17, 2013), Dangerous , by Sugaray Rayford and it's quite impressive. Rayford, well know as the featured voice of the Mannish Boys, has cut loose with his own release and he is backed by a huge list of talent. Opening with Country Boy and a strong smell of Chicago, Rayford's robust voice paves the way and Sugar Ray Norcia has the harp screaming. Anthony Geraci adds really nice key work on a solid bass by Willie J Campbell (bass) and Jimi Bott on drums. Stuck For A Buck has a bit of the James Brown shuffle going with Gino Matteo rippin fine guitar lead and Fred Kaplan warms the track with organ play. Rayford of course nicely handles lead vocals and a solid horn section made up of Ron Dziubla and Mark Pender cooks the track. On I'm Dangerous , Rayford and Norcia really grind deep in the blues.
