SHE GOT IT FROM THE START - GOOD ROCKIN' ROBINSON

Image
Louis Charles Robinson, 15 May 1915, Brenham, Texas, USA, d. 26 September 1976. "Good Rockin'" Robinson began playing guitar at the age of nine, and was reputedly taught to play bottleneck style by Blind Willie Johnson. Western swing musician Leon McAuliffe introduced him to the steel guitar; Robinson was also a blues fiddler of note and gave Sugarcane Harris some lessons on the instrument. He moved to the San Francisco area around 1939, where he often played together with his brother A.C. Robinson. They recorded for the Black And White label in 1945 as the Robinson Brothers. L.C. recorded for Rhythm Records in the early 50s, for World Pacific in the 60s, and for Arhoolie and Bluesway in the 70s, and also accompanied Mercy Dee Walton and John Lee Hooker on records. He died of a heart attack in September 1976. If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! I'm Gonna Murder My Baby - Pat Hare

Image
Auburn "Pat" Hare (December 20, 1930 - September 26, 1980) was an American electric Memphis blues guitarist and singer. His heavily distorted, power chord-driven electric guitar music in the early 1950s is considered an important precursor to heavy metal music. His guitar work with Little Junior's Blue Flames had a major influence on the rockabilly style, while his guitar playing on blues records by artists such as Muddy Waters was influential among 1960s British Invasion blues rock bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds He was born in Cherry Valley, Arkansas. He recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, serving as a sideman for Howlin' Wolf, James Cotton, Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland and other artists. Hare was one of the first guitarists to purposely use the effects of distortion in his playing. In 1951, he joined a blues band formed by Junior Parker, called Little Junior's Blue Flames. He played the electric guitar solo on "Love My Baby...

Bad Whiskey And Bad Women - Lil Son Jackson

Image
Melvin "Lil' Son" Jackson (August 16, 1915, Tyler, Texas - May 30, 1976, Dallas) was an American blues guitarist. He was a contemporary of Lightnin' Hopkins. Jackson's mother played gospel guitar, and he played early on in a gospel group called the Blue Eagle Four. He trained to be a mechanic and did a stint in the Army during World War II, then decided to pursue a career in blues music. He recorded a demo and sent it to Bill Quinn, the owner of Gold Star Records, in 1946. Quinn signed him to a recording contract and released "Freedom Train Blues" in 1948, which became a nationwide hit in the U.S. He recorded for Imperial Records between 1950 and 1954, both as a solo artist and with a backing band. His 1950 tune "Rockin' and Rollin" was recast by later musicians as "Rock Me Baby". He was hurt in a car crash in the middle of the 1950s and gave up his music career, returning to work as a mechanic. In 1960 he released albums for ...

TEXAS FLOOD - The Ramblin' Matt Trio

Image
RAMBLIN' MATT plays bold and faithful to the original arrangements of country & delta blues classics from the likes of Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Skip James, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Rev. Gary Davis, and Mississippi Fred McDowell among others featuring only lead vocals and guitar, played with or without slide. I am willing to perform in any types of venues, the act fits very well in small spaces such as coffee shops, small clubs, pubs and hotel bars and such. Also 1 hour sets for night live music venues. Since I can remember I have been fascinated by the blues in all its forms but to me there is nothing like the raw sound of the Country Blues from the pre-war years. In between the decade of 1920 and the beggining of the Second World War and thanks to the field recordings of Alan Lomax and others we have a legacy of many of the artists of the Mississippi Delta region. Names like Robert Johnson, Son House, Johnny Shines, the early Muddy Waters, Charly Patton a...

Long Distance Call - The Bornia Boys

Image
The Bornia Boys debuted at the Monterey Bay Blues Festival last year, on the silver, 25th Anniversary, and are thrilled to be back in the lineup for 2011. The band is a collection of stellar South Bay, CA musicians, unified by their common passion for the original blues legends. The Bornia Boys are Gene Parodi - vocals, Chris Berry - guitar, Chuck Fike - bass, David Parodi - drums, Alan "Eye Bone" Eglington - harp, and Steve Carlino - keyboards. There is a chemistry among the Bornia Boys that is rare, genuine and a joy to witness. The band was formed to pay tribute to the early blues music that has influenced so many musicians around the world and helped shape the sound of music today. Their commitment to honoring the blues as an original, American art form, with the elements of honesty, warmth and humor intact, is truly inspiring. Although they have only been together for a few years, they have quickly developed a sound that is both rooted in the traditional and uniquely ...

Blue Monday - Mark May

Image
Born Mark Thomas May, September 29, 1961, in Colombus, Ohio, Mark started to play guitar at the age of five. From a musical family, Mark was exposed to many different styles of music. His mother's love was Bluegrass and Country music. His brother, Ken, was into Rock and played with Craig Fuller, who formed Pure Prairie League, and wrote the song "Amy". At the age of 14 or15, Mark began playing with various bands and had his first professional club date around the age of 15 or 16. Mark moved to Houston in 1982 and played in numerous country bands in the Houston area. Numerous rock bands followed which allowed Mark to further express his talents as a guitarist. Blues-oriented music has always been an interest to Mark. One of his earliest influences was Hendrix. When Mark started to host the Monday Night Jam at The Crew Quarters in Seabrook, his love for the blues really took hold. Not only were the crowds responsive to the Blues, but Mark never felt more at home, both ...

Delmark Records artists: Mississippi Heat - Delta Bound - New Release review

Image
I just received the new recording, Delta Bound by Pierre Lacocque's Mississippi Heat . The Heat is packing some big time talent with Lacocque on Harp, Inetta Visor on vocal, Kenny Smith on drums, Billy Flynn on guitar, Chubby Carrier on accordion, Dietra Farr on vocals and Carl Weathersby guitar. The recording opens with Granny Mae , a stylized Chicago blues runner with Visor taking the lead and PL playing up a storm. Look - A - Here , Baby remains cradled in the arms of Chicago. Flynn plays a crisp guitar solo on this track of course in compliment to the solid vocals of Dietra Farr and smokin harp work of Lacocque. New Orleans Man takes a real look south as is indicated by the title with Carrier adding toe zydeco feel on the drumming of Smith. My Mother's Plea slows it down a little bit giving Visor a chance to dig in a little and opening the door for Flynn to play some cool riffs on guitar and for Cameron to show his stuff on keys. One particular treat on the recording i...

Eller Soul Records artists: The Bopcats - 25 Years of Rock n' Roll - New Release Review

Image
This is definitely not a recording that I would automatically say... this should be good. But you know...it's great! Lindy Fralin, famous pickup designer and manufacturer along with John and Gary Fralin are the Bopcats . They have put together a versatile set called 25 Years of Rock n' Roll which includes styles from blues to country (and everything in between. Often when you hear that, your first thought is watered down and indecisive but in this case, what you hear is a group of guys playing what they like and having a blast doing it. Ten of the seventeen tracks to be released on October 2, 2012, are originals and this recording is great listening. First up is Don't Want To Be Alone , a rock styled country song focused more toward dancing. Everly style vocal harmonizing enriches the track. Dark Train is even a little more country and is a really cool track. Who Drank My Beer has a lot more Chicago swing to it. Gary Fralin plays some pretty nice keys on this track. B...
