Zac Harmon & The Drive - Live - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live , from Zac Harmon & The Drive and it's super! Opening with soulful, NTRO , Nate Robinson on bass and Gino Iglehart on drums set a solid foundation, with Corey Lacy building on keys and lush guitar work by Zac Harmon and Kingston Livingston really setting the bar. Terrific opener. Blue Pill Thrill has super movement and soulful vocals by Harmon. Lacy on keys works the rhythm with Robinson and Iglehart and Livingston and and Harmon play stinging riffs on guitar really giving this track some kick. Deep blues track, Feet Back On The Ground features Albert King like stinging riffs and super soulful vocals by Harmon. Keeping the music floor low allows Harmon plenty of space to go dynamically from soft to wow quickly adding real emotion to the track. Excellent! Boogie Down is a strong jam with a firm piano base by Lacy giving Harmon plenty of headroom for vocal corralling. Lacy lays in some real tasty keyboar...

Interview and performances - Savanna Coen

Image
Hmmm. I guess I began my singing career at age five, when, as the story goes, I sang the Cinderella classic, “So This Is Love,” at my kindergarten talent show, leaving numerous moms in tears. However, it took four more years without singing, followed by a show-stealing number in a local play, for me to realize that singing and music are my passions. I’ve since opened for the Slug Queen competition, perform regularly on stage at Saturday Market and venues in and around Eugene, and was the surprise highlight of the Willamette Valley Blues & Brews Festival. I’ve been part of the Kidz Rock lineup, as well as the Grrrlz Rock Festival for the past few years, and this past summer, went to Chicago to a first-of-its-kind blues camp, where I studied with some of the genre’s greats. Now at age 13, I’m exploring interests in many musical genres — from rock and pop to jazz — but blues is what touches my soul. Medely - Mountain

Image
This is another super group fron the 60-and 70's. Three terrific players. Felix, Corky and Leslie. Today is Leslie's birthday. What a creative genius. Pappalardi was born in the Bronx, New York. A classically trained musician, he graduated from New York City's prestigious High School of Music & Art, and attended the University of Michigan As a producer, Pappalardi is perhaps best-known for his work with British psychedelic blues-rock power trio Cream, beginning with their second album, Disraeli Gears. Pappalardi has been referred to in various interviews with the members of Cream as "the fourth member of the band" as he generally had a role in arranging their music. He also played a session role on the songs he helped them record. As a musician, Pappalardi is widely recognized as a bassist, vocalist, and founding member of the American hard rock band/ heavy metal forerunner Mountain, a band born out of his working with future bandmate Leslie West's so...

Maxwell Street - 24 Pesos

Image
24PESOS is one of the fastest rising bands in the blues scene today. Emerging from the roughneck dives of London, 24PESOS burst on to the blues scene in 2008 with their raw and rootsy live shows and debut album “The Boogie Worm”. The band’s latest album “Busted broken and Blue” (release 19 July 2010) showcases the evolution of the 24Pesos sound – 11 boot stompin’ originals drawing from influences as diverse as Ray Charles, The Meters, James Brown, Freddie King, Howlin Wolf, and the Roots. Featuring saw-tooth Dobro guitars, searing harmonicas, a funky old school rhythm section and a greasy Hammond B3, the album showcases an eclectic and infectious blend that is the unmistakable 24Pesos sound. Hines Farm Blues Club

Image
Frank "Sonny" Hines and his wife Sarah bought a house and a farm on 30 acres of land from the Hallet Realty Company in Swanton, Ohio and the Hine's Farm Blues Club was born. As was common in the area for the late 1940s the Hineses began holding house parties and suppers in their basement. These parties eventually grew to the outside and the Hineses built the still standing Juke Joint in a heavily wood section of their property. This helped to draw even larger crowds and more musicians like Big Jack Reynolds, B. B. King, Freddie King, Jimmy McCracklin, Bobby Blue Bland and John Lee Hooker. When the crowds grew even bigger a large pavilion was built as a joint venture with Mr. Luke onto the back of the main club. With it's large area and raised stage at the back it was more than capable of holding all of the fans who came for the shows. It also doubled as a skating rink during the warm months and became known as "Mr. Luke's Outdoor ...

How About Some Hot Horns - Julius Pitman and the Revival

The ‘Revival’ features some of the most talented musicians in Virginia combined with the unique vocals of keyboardist/leader Julius Pittman which brings to the audience, sounds and dynamics reminiscent of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Buddy Miles, Jack Mack & The HeartAttack and Tower of Power. The ‘Revival’ features founder/keyboardist/vo...

Sitting Here Drinkin" - MARION JAMES

Image

As a child, James first experience with blues music came from watching vaudeville shows, checking out local performers or listening to her mother's record collection of 78s. During the early 1960's, Marion's touring band included guitarist, Jimi Hendrix, and bassist, Billy Cox. In 1966, she recorded the top-ten hit "That's My Man" for Nashville's Excello Records. Since then, Marion has played to sold-out audiences in Europe and the Southeastern United States. Recently, she was part of the Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit "Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945-1970" covering the rich R&B music history of Nashville.
