Sergio Pereira is a Rio-born guitarist and composer whose music seamlessly bridges traditional Brazilian groove with American jazz sophistication. Growing up in Rio during the vibrant 1960s and 70s, he picked up the acoustic guitar (violão) at age eight, heavily inspired by bossa nova legends like João Gilberto and Tom Jobim.

 His journey took a major turn in the 1980s when he relocated to New York City to study under jazz icons like Chuck Wayne and Sal Salvador. By the 1990s, Pereira was taking his global sound on the road, performing across Europe, Africa, and beyond. That lifetime of travel and training shines through in his latest album, Colors of Time, released on May 18, 2026.

 The record is a beautifully relaxed masterclass in contemporary Latin jazz, layering warm South American moods with smooth, atmospheric bossa textures. Pereira captures a rich sense of memory and quiet sophistication across the tracks, effortlessly blending his signature acoustic strings with sleek woodwinds and brilliant guest features.

The Deep Dive

The album hits the ground running with So They Sleep, a standout opener driven by a rich, atmospheric groove of heavy bass and percussion. Ariel Ramirez on bass really lights up the track, locking into a tight pocket with Mauricio Zottarelli on drums and percussion. A vibrant horn section elevates the sound, featuring Chipi Chacón on trumpet and Felipe Lamoglia on alto sax, alongside an excellent trombone solo by Rafael Rocha. Complemented by Oriente Lopez on piano and flute, this powerhouse lineup delivers a deeply sophisticated Brazilian jazz tone right out of the gate.

The momentum carries beautifully into the light and breezy title track, Colors of Time, featuring the lush phrasing of Pereira on guitar and the snappy drum work of Zottarelli. The energy shifts beautifully on Up the Hill, which pushes Camilla Pereira's vocals and Oriente Lopez's flute straight to the forefront. Supported by crisp percussion and rich strings from Frederika Krier on violin and Zachary Brown on cello, the track builds into a joyful, rolling samba groove that manages to be incredibly relaxing all at once. The brilliant instrumental piece Keep Shining features smooth, fretless bass lines by Mark Egan, a super piano solo by Luis Guerra, and crisp drums by Dan Pugach. Every element interlocks perfectly with Pereira's guitar, delivering a luminous and uplifting vibe that absolutely lives up to its name.

Wrapping the release is Rain Fall, a peaceful and reflective track that beautifully balances Pereira's intuitive guitar phrasing with Oriente Lopez's flute. Backed by the rhythmic drums of Mauricio Zottarelli and Carlos Lido on percussion, the song strips things down to a gentle bossa rhythm mixed with earthy textures. It serves as the perfect, soothing wind-down to a stellar record.
