Dewayne Pate - On The Up Side - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, On The Up Side, from Dewayne Pate, and it really is a strong release with a jazz spine and blues, funk and rock undertones. Opening with a tight fusion drum rhythm by Dennis Chambers on 4 the 5 of It and featuring Norbert Stachel on soprano sax, this track is moving. With Dwayne Pate punctual bass riffs and well adorned by Ray Obiedo on guitar, Peter Horvath on piano, David Kirk Mathews on synths and Frank Martin on synths. Excellent opener.  Funky blues, Iceman, showcases Tony Lindsay on lead vocal and the excellent guitar work of Chris Cain. Satchel again shines , this time on tenor sax with the power section of Johnnie Bamont on tenor and bari saxes, and Joel Behrman and with Brian Collier on drums, Obiedo on rhythm guitar, Matthews on B3 and of course the romping bass line of Pate. This track will have you moving. Another cool funky track, Imperial Strut, this time with an obtuse bass line and time signature by Pate  really scratches that itch. With Satchel on flute, lush piano by Matthews, Michael Spiro on percussion, and featuring Juan Luis Perez on vocal, Robben Ford showing adventurous guitar lead, and David Garibaldi on drums this track really shines. Cool shuffle, Blues Ala Monmouth features slick guitar lead by Ford and Marc Russo on alto sax. This track will have you tapping your foot with a romp of a bass line from Pate, Kevin Hayes on drums, Mathews on organ, Bamont on tenor and bari sax, and Behrman on trumpet. Very cool. Wrapping the release is Curtis Mayfield's, People Get Ready, with a soft approach. With Amikaeyla Gaston on vocal, Pate with complex counterpoint on bass and Karl Perazzo on percussion. This is a quiet yet solid closer for a strong release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Terry Hanck - I Still Get Excited - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, I Still Get Excited, by Terry Hanck and it's jam packed with sax infused blues. Opening with a rumble, title track, I Still Get Excited has a real nice boogie feel with excellent piano work buy Jim Pugh and cool guitar work by Johnny Cat Soubrand, with backing vocals by Whitney Shea and Lisa Leuschner Andersen, bass by Kid Andersen and drums by Butch Cousins. On Smooth Tyrone, Hanck leads on vocal and soulful sax with really nicely styled guitar work by Soubrand and again really nice piano work by Pugh. On Early In The Morning I particularly like Hanck's vocals and Chris Cain adds really strong lead guitar. I like Andersen's bass attack on this track and the backing vocals by Lisa are really nice. Pugh's B3 work on this track adds that additional dimension and June Core's drumming sets up a solid opening for Hanck to solo. Very nice.  Harmonica great, Rick Estrin joins in on Come On Back playing tag with Hanck on sax. With a cool shuffle feel and a slick guitar solo by Soubrand, this is one of my favorites on the release. Slow instrumental, Rosita (No Wall Can Hold Our Love) is a really nice showcase for Hanck on his sax with warm undertones by Pugh on B3. Howlin' Wolf's Howlin' For My Darlin' maintains it's original arrangement and spunk. Soubrand's stinging guitar work are nicely highlighted on this track of course sharing the spotlight with Hanck on sax. Very cool. Tracy Nelson joins Hanck on lead vocal on Spring with Tim Wagner on bass, Butch Cousins on drums and a soulful sax solo by Hanck. Super. Wrapping the release is Feel So Bad with a lot of spring in the rhythm. A Stax feel really gets the blood flowing on sax and Hanck really knows how to play it. Soubrand plays some of his flashiest solos on this one and Hanck's vocals work really nicely with this style. Solid closer for a real cool release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Mighty Mike Schermer - Bad Tattoo - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Bad Tattoo, from Mighty Mike Schermer, and I really like it. Opening with She Won't Be Coming Back, a cool Latin rhythm rocker features Mighty Mike on vocal and guitar and in particular Eric Bernhardt on bari sax. Nancy Wright slaps down a really nice tenor sax solo of her own and with Paul Revelli on drums, Steve Ehrmann on bass and Austin Delone, this is an excellent opener. Slipping into a really nice R&B groove on Lover's Hall Of Fame, Schermer shows his outright style on vocal and guitar backed by D'mar on drums, Kid Andersen on bass and organ and Dennis Love on congas and vocal. Shifting gears again on How Much Longer, Schermer gets on a country track with a really nice Cajun spice. With Revelli on drums, Ehrmann on bass, Delone on piano/Farfissa and Lisa Lueschner Andersen on backing vocals this track has great radio flavor and sets up explosive guitar riffs by Schermer. Title track, Bad Tattoo has a great loping swing and a solid, funny, story. With horn warmth and slick riffs by Schermer, this is definitely one of my favorites on the release. Tex Mex track, Hey Francine, is another of my favorites with tight drum rhythms, a cool guitar riff and nice lead and backing vocals by Schermer and Andersen. Excellent! Baby Down The Well is another track of specific note with Aki Kumar on harp, a slapping drum beat and a solid vocal delivery by Schermer, not to mention his hot slide work. Very cool. Make sure you check out Suffocating Love, in Johnny Guitar Watson style. Yeah, I'm talking that funky R&B blues, with a real back beat. Schermer doesn't mimic Watson's guitar style but plays twin leads and alternating solos with Chris Cain. Very very cool! Wrapping the release is Up All Night with a bright, Clapton/Cale style. Delone takes a nice piano solo, Schermer flashes his cards a few times and harmonizes with Andersen but holds back on an explosive ending. This is a nice track keeping you wanting more. This may not be the flashiest releases you will hear all year, but it may be one of the most solid end to end. Very nice work!

VizzTone Label Group artist: Deb Ryder - Enjoy The Ride - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Enjoy The Ride, from Deb Ryder and is has a great feel. Opening with high stepper, A Storm's Coming, Deb Ryder is back sounding as powerful as ever. Johnny Lee Schell and Coco Montoya on lead guitar plays nicely off of the steady beat of Ric Ryder on bass, Mike Finnigan on keys and Tony Braunagel on drums. Exceptional ballad, For The Last Time, is a terrific showcase for Ryder's voice and also features Finnigan on vocal as well with the sweet guitar lead of Montoya. What You Want From Me blends New Orleans feel with pure gospel vocals from Maxanne lewis, Ricky Nelson, Leslie Smith and Kudisan Kai Regalot. Very nice. Got To Let It Go has a real nice BB King style groove featuring Cain and Ryder on a cool vocal duet and slick guitar lead. Sweet Sweet Love has a tight Latin beat with nice piano work by Finnigan and featuring fat guitar riffs by Debbie Davies. Wrapping the release is Red Line featuring the strong harp work of Pieter van Der Pluijm. With Schell on bass and lead guitar, this is a solid closer for a solid release.

VizzTone Label Group artist: Nancy Wright - Playdate! - New release review

I just had the opportunity to review the newest release, Playdate!, from Nancy Wright and it's smokin! Opening with funky, Why You Wanna Do It, Wee Willie Walker takes the lead on vocal and Nancy Wright really sails on sax. Joe Kyle Jr. sets the pace on bass with some heavy lines and J. Hansen's drum work is tight. Excellent opener! On Willie Dixon's I Got What It Takes, Kyle again sets a strong bass line and Tommy Castro brings a real nice guitar solo. This track is in the groove and Wright delivers a great sound on sax backed by Tom Poole on trumpet and Faris Jarrah on trombone.Yes He Do is a great swinger with Victor Wainwright really taking control on piano. Wright takes it higher and the two hit it out of the park. Super. Eddie Shaw's Blues For The Westside is an absolute screamer with Wright really digging in. Chris Burns' piano work on this track really stands out and Joe Louis Walker stands tall with soulful guitar riffs fluidly added throughout as well as featured in solo form. Really tasty! R&B track, Been Waiting That Long features Frank Bey on lead vocals and with it's swampy beat martin Winstad adds cool percussion to an already gritty track. Wright really squeezes the horn on this one getting it to squeal. The thoughts of Jr Walker come around as Trampled blows from Wright's horn with Kid Andersen echoing the guitar retort and Jim Pugh showing his stuff on organ. Very cool. Satisfied has a distinct revival/gospel sound with the Plymouth Church of Jazz and Justice Choir bringing up the chorus. Wright sails on sax backed by Chauncey Roberts on tambourine and handclaps. Another track with deep funk, Warranty, features Terrie Odabi on lead vocals. This track is so well crafted it is likely to get strong airplay across a number of stations. Andersen sets in some real nice guitar riffs and Wright crafts a hot sax solo giving the track real heat. New Orleans flavored, Cherry Wine, has super cool drum work and Lisa Leuschner-Andersen brings cool backing vocals. Wright down right swings it when she comes in for her solo taking it to the house. Instrumental, There Is Something On Your Mind, is a great blues track with Wright really winding up her sax and Mr Elvin Bishop answering with Red Dog on slide. This track has Bishops name written all over it and Wright really knows how to stack these cards. Excellent! Mike Schermer takes the lead on guitar on the swinging, Back Room Rock. Burns and Kyle really get the track cranking and Wright seals the deal with fat sax work on this one. Wrapping the release is laid back, Soul Blue, with Wright and Chris Cain setting the stage. Cain's guitar work cuts like a hot knife, searing through the horns and keyboard work giving the track a relaxed but crisp sound. Burns takes a real nice piano solo leading up to Wright tying everything up tight with her final chorus. This is an excellent release with plenty of blues for everyone. Check it out!

Cozmik Records artist: The JC Smith Band - Love Mechanic - New release review

I just received the newest release, Love Mechanic, from The JC Smith Band, and it's a ripper. Opening with jump track, Jump For Joy, Smith is out of the box on lead vocals pushed notably by Donnie Green on drums and Tommy Maitland on trumpet. Abraham Vasquez and David Sandez rips it up with nice sax work and Smith lays down a nice guitar solo as well. A rock version of Mr James Brown's infamous Cold Sweat is up next with an almost JB like roll. It cool hearing someone taking James Browns hottest track and using what is his trademark rhythm solid bass line and turning it back on itself by Robert Green. Very Cool idea. Smith wails again on lead guitar backed by the horn section making for a cool cover. R&B ballad, Come On Home To Me, is up next with a nice piano solo by Richard Palmer. Title track, Love Mechanic, is a blues rocker with a bit of chug a lug compliments of Green and Green. Cool rhythm work with horn backing and JC cuts loose with a real nice guitar solo and Todd Reid is hot on the organ as well. On shuffle track, Ring Around The Tub, Smith lays down a nice guitar solo adding to his clever lyrics. Elmore James' track, Yonder Wall gets a total make over with a heap of funk. I really like Green's drum work on this track and Vasquez and Sandez set down some real nice sax work. Smith lays in a real nice solo of his own but for me on this track it's the Green's that make it happen. Bad, Bad Feeling has a totally different feel with a simple almost train style blues rhythm and what to my ears sounds like banjo solo. Little Walter track, Last Night, takes the slow road and Smith digs in nicely on the guitar intro. Todd Reid really lays it out nicely on organ on this track making it one of my favorites on the release. Super star guitar man, Chris Cain, joins on Elmore James' shuffle track, Talk To Me Baby, and he really rips it. Staying in shuffle mode, Rocket To The Moon, has a real nice feel with a nice muted trumpet solo by Maitland and sax solo by Vasquez and Sandez. Eddie Boyd's, Five Long Years, gives Smith a chance to stretch the strings out a bit again and he does a nice job. Smith's vocals on this track are probably his best and with excellent backing by Reynolds and Maitland, a real fine track. Wrapping the release is Toronzo Cannon's Ain't No Stranger. Smith and Vasquez trade solos and Maitland and Reynolds provide solid horn support over a nice driving bass line by Green.

Chris Cain Relief Fund

Friends and fans, thank you, thank you, thank you....for all your generous contributions to Chris Cain. Dave and I are overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support this site has generated from friends and fans all over the country. I hope to print out a complete list of all the donors for Chris to see, along with all your kind words of encouragement and appreciation for the amazing man that Chris is. Thank you to those of you who have shared this to others as well. Please keep the love coming. -Tracy Pain Subscribe to Updates A message from Dave Mathews (bandmate and longtime close friend of Chris Cain): Due to some recent sudden personal changes in his life, Chris Cain has fallen on hard times. All of his fans need to know that as great a musician and as wonderful a person as Chris is, he struggles to make ends meet in day to day life and needs all of your support right now. In spite of his tremendous talent, Chris never has a lot of money. It's difficult for him to travel (he doesn't drive), he can't get enough gigs to pay his bills, and he struggles to keep the business end of things together. And, to top it off, Chris is now faced with the financial challenge of moving after being in the same place for years. That's just not his way; he's about MUSIC. Chris is a genius on many levels besides music, incredibly funny, witty, an incredible mimic of some of our most beloved celebrities from the 60's thru today, well read, very observant of humanity in general, and loyal to ALL of his many fans. I'm a friend, but I've also always been a fan, since the first time I heard him play, in about 1981 (although I didn't get to play with him until about '87). I love Chris like a brother, and try to play with him whenever I can. Myself, along with Chris' longtime friends, Louis and Tracy Pain, set this site up so his many fans can give back what he's given to us all these years. Our goal is to get Chris some funds needed to give him a fresh start as he goes through a difficult phase in his life. Please donate what you can. Every dollar helps. If you are unable to donate, you can also help Chris in other ways. PLEASE come out and support him whenever you can. Buy his CDs, hire him for a private party, whatever you can do for this amazing artist and human being...let's raise the roof for Chris! All the more reason to try and help our very gifted friend sooner than later..... Thank you, David K Mathews
