Yellow Dog Records artist: Cassie Taylor - Out Of My Mind - New Release Review

Image
I just received a copy of the new release, Out Of My Mind , by Cassie Taylor and she just keeps getting better! This release of 12 original tracks opens with Ol' Mama Dean , a soulful strut with a great pop hook and in addition to sweet vocals from Taylor includes rippin nice slide guitar work from Steve Mignano. Some Spare Love is a particularly cool blues track with soft but rich vocals supported by clean guitar riffs by Mignano and minimal drums by Larry Thompson and bass by Taylor. Mignano really has a nice hand on the fretboard and adds significantly to the overall feel of the track. I really like this. Lay My Head On Your Pillow is a real nice R&B style track done lightly backed by acoustic guitar and drums. Taylor continues to demonstrate her individuality in vocal style, not going over the top with vocal pyrotechnics but singing solid tracks with certain feel. New Orleans shows a definite period style with solid pop style vocals and is strengthened by addition of tr...

Alligator/Proper Records artist: JJ Grey & Mofro - This River - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, This River (June 24, 2013), by JJ Grey & Mofro and I really like it. Opening with Your Lady, She's Shady , Grey lays down a hip hop style rhythmic attack with ultra cool horn, harp and guitar solos. On Somebody Else , one of my favorite tracks on the release, Grey sounds a lot like Al Green in arrangement and style with it's prancing strut. With reverb on the guitar, Stax style drumming and horns on the bottom, his song is really sweet. 99 Shades of Crazy is a straight up rocker with a blues twist. Grey knows how to use rhythm and the vocal blending and horn support makes this a strong radio candidate. The Ballad Of Larry Webb is an extremely tasty track. Strong melody and vocal execution with only minimal instrumentation for atmosphere, this is another of the best tracks on the release. Florabama is a funky pop like track and actually reminds me a lot of Kiss (Prince). Addition of sax and trumpet work on this track gives it a lot of...

Blues Leaf Records artist: Jumpin' Jack Strobel - Things Have Changed - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Things Have Changed , from Jumpin' Jack Strobel . Opening with Mother Earth , a Memphis Slim track, Strobel takes a very earthy approach, exhibiting extreme dexterity and creativity on the keyboard. Listening to this track it's hard to believe that it is the same track as performed by Gov't Mule. Backing vocals by Layonne Holmes, Ricky Laurie Collins and Big Joe Fitzpatrick add a particularly warm richness. Next up is Dylan's Things Have Changed with a jazzy Latin beat. I particularly like the low fretboard guitar work on this track. On Get On The Right Track Baby , Strobel gets a good polished delivery of a Texas swing track. Andy Riedel plays some tasty swing guitar riffs adding some sparkle to this swinging track. Strobel again steps up with dazzling key work and Steve Brown (drums) and Mike Lamps (bass) are tight on the bottom. On I Don't Want To Know , Strobel keeps the driving swing going with dominate piano riffs and stir...

Blue Hoss Records artist: Frank Bang & the Secret Stash - Double Dare - New Release review

Image
I just received the new release, Double Dare from Frank Bang & The Secret Stash . Bash, an ex Buddy Guy band member delivers his 5th release and it's quite unpredictable and interesting. Opening with the title track, Double Dare , Bang has the joint rockin. Having traces of Rory Gallagher and Jimi Hendrix, Bang plays some wicked slide. Burnin' Up The Wind is a cool modern blues rock track with traces of Willie Dixon. Russ Green plays some drifting blues riffs on harp and Bang sings the blues complimented by nice slide work. Next up is Lose Control demonstrates a unconventional approach to the blues such as that shown by Chris Duarte or Eric Gales. Bang has a sound all his own with hot horn interludes from Greg Ward and interesting guitar work.. God Fearin' Man is a great blues rocker with a crisp drum rhythm by Bobby Spelbring and continuing a strong set of driving blues rock tracks. Wonder Woman has a more solitary sound featuring excellent vocals and resonator sl...

Rounder Records : History's Swamp People Celebrate The History and Culture of the Deep Delta - New Release Review

Image
I just received History's Swamp People , and new release from Rounder Records. This 13 track compilation showcases current and past masters of regional music. Opening with Steel Bill 's Swamp People , this is a Cajun house party. Dominated by a contemporary blend of funk, fiddle and blues rock, this track also features a nice clean guitar solo from Bill. Next up is a 1969 hit track, Amos Moses , by Jerry Reed . This track was always a crowd favorite and has just a taste of country picking on an otherwise rock track. Buckwheat Zydeco comes on pure cajun with Zydeco La Louisianne and an accordion romp. Everybody loves Tony Joe Whites Polk Salad Annie , up next and another top track from 1969. Amanda Shaw plays French Jig , a cajun fiddle track accompanied primarily by drums. Nice track. The Neville Brothers come on with the high polish on Fire On The Bayou , a funky track with sophisticated instrumentals and vocals. This is a track with real movement and voodoo overtones. V...

Carson Diersing

Image
Stammering, 8-year old Carson Diersing mustered up every ounce of guts he had to tell his harmonica teacher, Indiana music legend Tony Cooley, that “Skip To My Lou” (his first assignment) was not his style. Mr. Cooley looked Carson straight in the eye and proclaimed, “You’re 8 years old. You don’t have a style.” Two weeks later Tony encouraged Carson’s family to go to The Bean Blossom Blues Fest and enter young Carson in his first harmonica contest. Carson did—playing “Skip to My Lou,” naturally. However, Carson was stunned when he was announced the first-place winner. He walked onto the huge stage at the Bill Monroe Campground—and from that point his life changed: “Looking out at that huge crowd that day did something to me—the energy was astounding!” Carson recalls. He never looked back—deciding there that he would make his life making music. Carson began playing as much as he could, and continually sitting in with other artists—and his life became a whirlwind. By 12, he wa...

24 Pesos

Image
24 PESOS is a band from London, UK that is formed by four musicians with a passion for Blues, Soul, Funk and the rhythms of New Orleans. Not content to simply rehash and imitate, 24 PESOS twist the traditional Blues form, blending the raw energy and down home grooves of the Meters with the sophisticated feel and harmony of John Scofield, John Mayer and Ray Charles while staying true and respectful to their Blues roots. Once upon a time guitarist, singer, songwriter Julian Burdock had a dream. Wouldnt it be great to be in a band called 24Pesos. In 2006 Silas Maitland and Julian Burdock wrote and produced a record for legendary soul singer Geno Washington. The idea for that record was to capture Genos live energy and improvisational approach. The album was a return to form for Geno who regards this record as his most exciting and original to date. It was during the recording of that record that Burdock and Maitland decided to put together a group to play live and record their own mater...

Am I Losing You - Sherman Robertson & The BluesMove

Image
Sherman Robertson (born October 27, 1948, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, United States) is an American blues guitarist, songwriter and singer, who has been described as "one part zydeco, one part swamp blues, one part electric blues and one part classic rhythm and blues." Robertson was born in Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. At the age of 13, he watched a performance on television by Hank Williams. Duly inspired and equipped with a cheap guitar purchased by his father, he started playing the songs previously performed by Freddie King and Floyd London. As he lived close to the Duke/Peacock recording studio, Robertson took the opportunity to acquaint himself with some of the musicians who recorded there. At the same time, in his late teens, Robertson played in a band in various bars of his Fifth Ward, Houston neighborhood. In 1982, Clifton Chenier heard Robertson's band playing at the Crosstown Blues Festival. Robertson moved back to Louisiana, learned to play slide gui...

I55 Productions artist: Eric Hughes Band - Drink Up - New Release Review

Image
I just received the new release, Drink Up , by the Eric Hughes Band and it's quite good. Starting off with the title track, Drink Up , a classic jump rocker. This track not only has the beat but it also has great unusual guitar riffs and a little bit of sense of humor. That's My Baby's Mama takes a whole new turn with a pop R&B sound and solid radio vocals. Blues Magician is a great track with a slick guitar hook. I really like the choice of rhythm guitar harmony. This is extremely solid and in addition to the the funky bottom really sets the tone. Lead guitar riffs from Hughes are hot and this is definitely one of my favorite tracks on this release. Frostina is another funky track with great key work from Robert Nighthawk Tooms. With Texas guitar rhythm and overdriven guitar solos this is a track with a lot of character. The first real straight forward blues track, Tested Positive For The Blues , is a great swingin boogie blues with great harp and piano work. Talki...

Palaver Records artist: Lance Whalen - Sweet Sugar Pie - New Release Review

Image
I just received a copy of the new Lance Whalen release, Sweet Sugar Pie and although not very bluesy, it scratches an itch. Whalen has a scratchy voice and song style very similar to one of my favorite contemporary songwriters, Frank Black. Opening with What The Hell Was I Thinking , a light folksy but European sounding track, this is the beginning of a quite clever EP. Accompanied by a simple drum beat, minimal banjo, bass and understated but tasty guitar work this is a really great song. Best I Can is a very traditional sounding track based over a simple waltz structure. Again, strong vocals by Whalen are the highlight although there is a nice simple violin solo on this track as well. The title track, Sweet Sugar Pie is a simple ballad with a strong melody and smooth instrumentation. Completing the EP is The Way You Love Me , cool folk ballad with experimental sounding looped electric guitar work under the surface. This is a short but interesting release demonstrating strong wri...
