Bman's Blues Report

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Franklin Sessions , from Mike Guldin and Rollin' and Tumblin' and it's a solid set of contemporary blues. Opening with The Franklin Shuffle , Mike Guldin leads the way on vocal and guitar, backed by Yates McKendree on drums, James Pennebaker on guitar, and David Santos on bass. With a nice guitar lope and sparkling piano work by Kevin, this track cuts a nice groove. With a nice soulful feel, The Right Thing finds The McCrary Sisters backing Guldin on vocals, Kevin on organ, Yates adding some real nice lap steel, Bill Sharrow on bass, Tim Hooper on piano and Billy Wear on drums. Very cool. Yates really shines on guitar on Blow Wind Blow with a super bass groove by Sharrow, and Wear on drums. Guldin on lead vocal and Kevin really getting the organ going makes this one of my favorites on the release. Smokin' Woman has a deep groove with Sharrow leading the way on bass.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Crusin' Kansas City , from Mike Bourne Band and it's straight up rockin' blues. Opening with laid back title track, Crusin' Kansas City with my man Johnny Burgin on guitar with Mike Bourne, Patrick Recob on bass, and Dave Creighton on organ. Cool opener. Swing track, Lose Your Rings, Keep Your Fingers features Bourne on lead vocal and beefy organ work by Creighton. Burgin steps up with his hot, stylistic guitar soloing giving the track real sting. Morganfield sound permeates, Hollow Man with John Paul Drum on harmonica and Bourne on vocal. Adam Hagerman on on drums and Recob on bass keep the bottom tight and understated slide work adds nicely to the set. Loose With The Truth is absolutely my favorite track on the release with real nice vocal work by Bourne, a featured trumpet solo by Greg Hopkins a cool sax solo and Johnny Burgin loose with some of the signature, blistering guitar work that makes him on...

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Generations of Blues: West Side Legacy , from Larry Taylor and the Taylor Family and it's strong. Opening with She Treat Me Just The Same , Larry Taylor on lead vocal and drums leads the way. With a bluesy R&B feel, he sets a solid drum line, joined by Joe B. Brinson on guitar, Abraham Avery on bass, Barrelhouse Bonni on keys and hot sax work by Ronnie G. Solid opener. Demetria Taylor steps up to the mic on Bad Girl , a nice shuffle and she's the perfect leader for this track. Her vocals are sassy and tight, backed by Eddie Taylor Jr on guitar and Ronnie G. on sax and Duke Harris on keys.  Brenda Taylor is featured on lead vocal on I Found Out with Jerry-O Mansfield on guitar and Ronnie G on sax. This is a strong track with a great balance between Brenda and Ronnie. Demetria is back up front on funky, You Belong To Me .  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Nosy Neighbors , from Paul Boddy & The Slidewinder Blues Band , and it's a cool, straightforward contemporary blues band. Opening with easy shuffle, Trouble Finds Me Everyday , Paul Boddy on lead vocal and guitar sets a solid platform, joined by Glenn Halo on keys, Chuck Hearne on bass and Dave Hollingsworth on drums. Another shuffle, Hanky Panky Blues has a real nice sway with a strong piano solo by Hale and excellent vocal by Boddy who adds some real nice slide. With it's cool Latin beat, title track, Nosy Neighbors , has strong radio appeal with a great melody, hot drum rhythm and real nice slide work by Boddy. Right Way Up is a real nice blues rocker with nice finger work by Boddy, a driving bass line by Hearne and strong backing vocals. Wrapping the release is Trash Can Head , a laid back bluesy rocker with super jammy piano by Hale, and a cool bass line by Hearne. Backing vocals aren't listed on the ...

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Ridin' The Blinds , from Hudspeth and Taylor and it's an excellent new interpretation of early  Mississippi Delta Blues. Opening with Poor Boy Long Ways from Home Jaisson Taylor on vocal and percussion and Brandon Hudspeth on guitar take this traditional tune and retain the best of it's vintage sound with modern style. Taylor has a strong voice and Hudspeth's slide work is solid. Nice opener. Otto Virgial's Little Girl In Rome has great energy with electrifying slide work by Hudspeth. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Willie Borum's Lonesome Home Blues with excellent vocal power by Taylor and driving guitar work by Hudspeth. Excellent. Waters' I Can't Be Satisfied kicks the set into up tempo mode and the duo is really jamming. With Morganfield trademark slide styling and super vocals, this is a great track.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Six Strings of Steel by Duke Robillard an it's terrific. Opening with Barney Kessel's Git With It!,  Duke Robillard hits the ground running. This is a great tune and Robillard knows how to sell it. Joined by Marty Ballou on bass, Mark Teiseira on drums and with an outstanding solo by Doug James on sax, this is an excellent opener. On, Shame, Shame, Shame , Robillard really gets things rockin. Chris Cote does a great job on vocal and another outstanding solo by James and of course strong guitar work by Duke. Chuck Willis' Love Struck is deep in soul and Cote does an excellent job. Warm organ work by Bruce Bears paves the way for exceptional guitar phrasing by Robillard making this one of my favorite tracks on the release. Leo Parker's Billy In The Lion's Den is an excellent showcase for James and he really does shine. Robillard springboards from the deep throaty work of James with his own light fingere...

  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Painting Stars , from The LH Express (formerly The Lucas Haneman Express) and it's energetic. Opening with Getaway, with it's country rock feel, shows Lucas Haneman up front on vocal and guitar with Megan Laurence on vocal, and Martin Newman on bass and Valera Negovora on drums and percussion. Powerful vocal duet really gives this track a nice push and Negovora's potent drumming really kicks it up a notch. Bluesy, Being Strong , features Laurence with rich vocal lead and one of the most powerful tracks on the release. A cool, rock bottom and firm bass by Newman makes this one of my favorite tracks on the release and Haneman steps up with a particularly soulful guitar solo. Very nice. Funky rocker, When I'm With Her , has a strong guitar riff and Haneman and Laurence's interplay vocally makes this my choice for radio track. Very cool. I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Anahata , from Michael Franklin and Timothy Franklin and there's some cool music on this release. Opening with horn unfused, Shinkansen , Timothy Franklin lays down a relentless bass line and Michael Franklin on keys alternates with him taking turns on lead, all backed by the Tower of Power horns (Emilio Castillo on Alto sax, Stephen Kupka on bari sax, Adolfo Acosta on trumpet, Tom E Politer on tenor sax, Sal Cracchiolo on trumpet) Marc Clement Jr on drums and Steady Joseph on percussion. Excellent opener. Ave For Josephne has a strong melody featuring lead bass by Tim, Larry Coryell on acoustic guitar, Olga Kopakova on violin, Michael on grand piano and Paul Fluery on cello. Very nice. Maynardvishnu is an aggressive track with Blilly Cobham leading the way on drums. With Donnie Rogozinski really hammering the trumpet, and an excellent guitar solo by Tommy Carlton, this track will make you sit up and take notice. Stro...

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Vol. 12, from Andres Roots and it's a solid acoustic blues release. Opening with So It Is, Subhuti , Roots plays a solid, resonator with slide tune and a solid opener. Dromedary is a cool. finger picked acoustic track with a strong melody and rhythm. Roots has a great sense of blues as it fits in todays world. Another favorite on the release is Picnic at Dockery's with a claw like picking style and super slide accents. Years Past Midnight is a cool rout with country blues style picking, again accented with fat slide work by Roots. Wrapping the release is Sherwood with rhythmic strumming setting a firm foundation for Roots' melodic slide work.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Super Soul Session! , by Arlen Roth and Jerry Jemmott and its a cool updated, guitar super charged, soul package. Opening with soul favorite, I'm Just A Mortal Man , African vocalist, Mukamuri, is upfront on lead vocal with a super bass line by Jerry Jemmott and featuring some tasty riffs by "telecastermaster" Arlen Roth. On BB King's The Thrill Is Gone , Roth lays down sensuous guitar lead under the soulful vocal lead of Joe Louis Walker.  Not just a regular cover of King's classic, Roth remakes the sinuses of the song giving it new vitality. Aretha's Chain of Fools maintains all of it's soulful swagger but nobody could ever tough her vocals so Roth takes the melody on guitar giving it a thorough rework and Jemmott rocks the bottom.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Attitude, from Soulful Femme and it's a tight rocker with a blues overtone. Opening with title track, Attitude , Soulful Femme principals Stevee Wellons and Cheryl Rinovato get down to business. Wellons is upfront on vocal, with Rinovato playing a great blues rhythm, backed by Albert Castiglia on guitar, Michael Bram on drums, Matt Raymond on bass and Dave Gross on Hammond. Kevin Burt adds some really soulful lead vocal on Insane Asylum . Rich, warm vocal blending with Wellons and nicely placed guitar lead by Rinovato make this one of my favorites on the release. With an R&B feel, Loser's Game has a strong melody, and with Wellons' vocal lead and a solid guitar solo, just the right feel for a top radio track. Reggae fused, Dysfunctional Funk is another track with strong radio appeal with a strong melody, solid lead vocals and nice addition of Doug Wooverton on trumpet and Mark Earley on sax.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Back To Baton Rouge , from Lil' Jimmy Reed with Ben Levin and it's terrific. Opening with Jimmy Reed shuffle, Down In Virginia , Lil' Jimmy Reed is up front on guitar, harmonica and lead vocal and showing excellent aptitude at both gets this release going. Backed by super piano guy, Ben Levin on piano, Aron Levin on second guitar, Walter Cash Jr on bass and Ricky Nye on drums. On slow blues, They Call Me Lil' Jimmy , Reed gets the chance to show some really tasty guitar riffs, complimenting his strong blues vocals. This track may be my favorite on the release. Fats Domino style blues, Back To Baton Rouge has a war swagger and Reed's trademark guitar sound elevates the track. Another Jimmy Reed track, I'm The Man Down There , has that Jimmy Reed Strut.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Groove Me Baby, by Lady J Huston and it's a cool set of blues, R&B and soul. Opening with Your Call , a cool shuffle with Lady J Huston on lead vocal, complimented by Adrea Rohlehr on backing vocal, Ben Shafer on tenor sax, Darryl Bassett on lead guitar, Frank Dunbar on bass, James Gugle on drums, Jason Cooper on lead guitar, and M. Lew Winer III on bari sax. Huston plays a cool flugelhorn on Tearing Me Apart , a nice slower blues ballad, with Anna C. Allen on backing vocal. Very nice. With a light Latin rhythm on, Corona You Make Me Sick!, Huston mixes it up and adds a sweet trumpet solo. With Dunbar on bass, Winer III on tenor sax and Nichaus Iv on lead guitar, a real cool track. Pure R&B oozes on title track, Groove Me Baby . Adding synth herself, and joined by Rohlehr on backing vocals, with Ashton Channing Proctor on rhythm guitar, Shafer on flute, Bwayne Smotherson on backing vocals, Charles Smotherson ...

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Dirt Woman Blues , from Grainne Duffy , and it's a healthy helping of blues, rock, soul, country and pop. Opening with blues rocker, Well Well Well , Ireland born, Grainne Duffy shows plenty of swagger on vocals, backed by Marc Ford on guitar and vocal, Paul Sherry on guitars, Elijah Ford on bass and JJ Johnson on drums. Upfront lead guitar by Marc Ford gives the track bite and along with Elijah's bass work and Johnson's tight drumming makes this a strong opener. Soul soaked, Running Back To You really is a showcase for Duffy with emotional vocal work, highlighted by a crisp guitar solo by Ford. Another soulful ballad, Hold On To You , is really strong with a memorable melody, strong vocals and plenty of feel, not unlike the music coming out of Muscle Shoals in the 70's. Very nice.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Electric Fox , by Michael Vincent and it's a cool, modern, edgy pop release. Opening with Together , Bay area, singer/songwriter Vincent crafts his lyrics and melodies supported by his band, U No Who. With Anthony Fulgar on drums, Scott Warren on lead guitar and David Mendoza on bass and harmony vocal, these guys rock. Solid harmonies with Mendoza and jangly guitar work by Warren give this track that indie feel. Kinda Like (Forever) is my favorite track on the release with it's almost Kinks like feel with loosely structured guitar work and a tight bottom by Fulgar. Wrapping the release is Travel with an up tempo beat. Vincent uses a call and response setup with Warren on guitar balancing his vocal lead.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Right Man , by D.K. Harrell and if you're looking for a new favorite blues singer who knows how to play a great blues phrase, look no further. Opening with title track, The Right Man , D.K. Harrell on lead guitar and vocal is smooth. He knows how to swing and his riffs are clean. Joined by Kid Andersen on rhythm guitar, Jim Pugh on keys, Jerry Jemmott on bass, Tony Coleman on drums and Jon Otis on congas this is a great opener. With a lot of soul and a funky overtone, Harrell lays down Get These Blues Out Of Me . I really can't think of a more BB King like performer who sounds genuinely original. His delivery is sincere and his counterpoint guitar is effortless and rich. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Hello Trouble with a slower pace and perfect vocal/guitar call and response.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Outside The Lines , by Misty Blues and I really like it. Opening with Where The Blues Come From , MB lays down a heavy bottomed blues rocker with thumping bass lines and vocal by Bill Patriquin, and heavy drum work and vocals by Rob Tatten, and rabble rousing organ by David Vittone with solid contributions by Gina Coleman on cigar box guitar and vocal, Diego Monque on guitar and vocal, Seth Fleischmann on guitar and vocals and  Benny Kohn on keys. On One Of These Days , Matt Cusson on keys and vocals gives the track a cool, Latin feel with Fleischmann soaring on lead guitar, strong sax work by Aaron Dean, and snappy drumming by Tatten. Coleman really shines on lead vocal on funky, Grip Your Soul . Her deep vocal attack, along with excellent guitar work by Fleischmann and screaming sax work by Aaron Dean make this one of my favorites on the release.
