Diamond In A Coalmine - Jake Chisholm - New Release Review

Image
I just received the new release, Diamond In A Coalmine , from Jake Chisholm and I really like it. Chisholm is on of the few younger guys who are embracing the basic rudiments of rock and blues creating a raw but cohesive music. Opening with I'm Gonna Let You Be , a strong mix of blue, rock and rhythm, you can hear Led Zep and Robert Johnson. Powerful drumming by Sly Juhas, ripe guitar riffs and a strong hook allow Chisholm to do his lead vocals in a rustic distorted fashion. Very nice. Let's Do It Again with a driving bass bottom by Chris Banks with early ZZ Top flavored slide work this is another cool track. Robert Johnson's Traveling Riverside Blues is up next with a fresh look. It keeps a lot of the original raw edge but with an updated feel and primitive sounding guitar riffs played forward in the mix. My guess is you'll hear comparisons drawn between Chisholm and other like minded artists such as Stripes and Keys. The music is born of the same mother but the chil...

Cry Over Me - Lonesome Lee

Image
Jimmie Lee Robinson Born: April 30, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois Died: July 6, 2002 in Chicago, Illinois Jimmie Lee Robertson was part of the generation of blues performers who helped establish Maxwell Street in Chicago as a famous blues locale. He was known as "Lonesome" Jimmie Lee, or sometimes nicknamed "The Lonely Traveller". He was related to Bessie Smith on his father's side, and saw his musical roots as lying in Mississippi (his grandparents had moved north). He first played acoustic guitar, but switched to the electric blues style when he joined the harmonicist Little Walter's band. He recorded with musicians like Magic Sam and Jimmy Reed, made records as a leader, and took part in the American Folk Blues Festival package tour of the US and Europe in 1965. He played bass as well as guitar. He took a succession of days jobs in the 1970s and 1980s, but returned to recording in the 1990s, and made several albums for the Delmark, Amina and Apo labels. ...

What Can I Do - Bobby Marchan

Image
Bobby Marchan (born Oscar James Gibson) (April 30, 1930 in Youngstown Ohio – December 5, 1999) was a well-respected American rhythm and blues bandleader, MC, singer-performer, recording artist, and female impersonator, who initially began performing in New Orleans nightclubs, specifically the Dew Drop Inn and the Club Tijuana in the mid-1950s. Marchan also toured with the band of Huey "Piano" Smith, sometimes performing as lead singer / bandleader and substituting vocally for Huey Smith (who reputedly often would stay in New Orleans to write and record while his namesake band "Huey Smith and the Clowns" played clubs and toured on the road). The touring band included James Booker on piano. One of Marchan's vocal performances with Huey Smith and the Clowns can be heard on the New Orleans R&B recording, "Don't You Just Know It", which was released in 1958. Marchan also had a solo #1 hit on the national R&B charts in 1960 with the tune "...

I ain't Drunk - Alex Jenkins & The Bombers

Image
Alex Jenkins & the bombers is a rythym & blues based blues band. If you had to label this band the best way to describe their music is that it has elements of R&B, blues, jazz, rockabilly, roots and Americana with having an uptown, Westside Chicago sound. From the first song until the last song the band will have the audience jumping to their feet to tapping their toes. The bands current release “Creepin After Midnight” showcases the many influences in the playing and vocals. The Cd was on the Illinois Roots Airplay Radio chart for September 2012. The cd also made the top 25 airplay for the month of July 2012 at WEFT radio Champaign Illinois. The song she wants to rock made the top 50 songs for 2011 plays on WKCC radio Kankakee Illinois friends of the blues show. The band is currently working on material for their second release. Rip Cat records artist: Mike Eldred Trio - Elvis Unleaded - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Elvis Unleaded , from Mike Eldred Trio and it's a real rocker. Eldred (vocal and guitar), John Bazz (Bass) and Jerry Angel (drums)breathe new life into music from my dad's generation. Opening with one of my least favorite Elvis tracks ever, Burning Love , Eldred makes it sound fresh and plays a stirring guitar solo to boot. Up next is I Feel So Bad , which I have always identified with Little Milton and Foghat. I can't hear Elvis in it at all (which is good) and this is a true rocker and a great track. Rip It Up , another track that I identify more with Bill Haley or Little Richard is another great track. Eldred really works the rockabilly riffs on this track and the band is hot and tight. Gene Taylor plays some hot piano riffs on this track as well. Don't , more of a traditional ballad is nicely presented with authentic 50's style vocal backing. Bossa Nova Baby definitely has an Elvis sound.... like Eddie Murphy said, Elvis coul...

BOURBON STREET JUMP - RAYMOND HILL

Image
b. 29 April 1933, Clarksdale, Mississippi, USA, d. 16 April 1996, Clarksdale, Mississippi, USA. Tenor saxophonist and singer Hill played with many blues and R&B artists. He was influenced strongly in his early years by Jimmy Liggins and Joe Liggins. A friend and musical associate of then-drummer Billy Gayles, Hill joined up with Ike Turner with whom he first worked in the late 40s. He stayed with Turner for several years, playing in the Tophatters big band and also in the better-known Kings Of Rhythm. Hill appeared on several records, including ‘Rocket 88’, and his honking saxophone was soon an integral part of the sound of Turner’s band. Although Hill appeared on many records with Turner and others, including Howlin’ Wolf, he made only a handful of tracks under his own name. These were for labels such as Highwater Records and Sun Records, and among the best-known tracks were ‘I’m Back Pretty Baby’, ‘Blue Man’, ‘You’re Driving Me Insane’, ‘The Snuggle’ and ‘Bourbon Street Jump’. Blues For Monet - George Adams

Image
George Rufus Adams (April 29, 1940 Covington, Georgia – November 14, 1992 New York City, New York) was an American jazz musician who played tenor saxophone, flute and bass clarinet. He is best known for his work with Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Roy Haynes and in the quartet he co-led with pianist Don Pullen, featuring bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Dannie Richmond. He was also known for his idiosyncratic singing. George Adams's musical style was rooted in the blues and in primarily that of African-American popular music. As a saxophonist his greatest influences seem to have been Rahsaan Roland Kirk, with whom he played in Mingus's band on occasion, as well as the adventurous edginess of John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. He played with tremendous intensity and passion, as well as lyricism and subtlety. At times he bent over backwards when playing, almost ending up on his back. His singing varied from wild wailing blues to ballads.[citation needed] Adams and Don Pullen shared a ...

Joe & Odell Thompson

Image
One of the last links to the prewar African-American string band tradition, banjo player Odell Thompson was born on August 9, 1911, the son of John Arch Thompson, who was also a pretty fair banjo player. Thompson was raised in the northeastern part of Orange County in North Carolina, and when he began playing banjo, he absorbed his father's traditional repertoire, and was soon playing in string bands for square dances and frolics with his cousin, fiddler Joe Thompson. Odell took up guitar (he also played a little fiddle) and began playing the blues in the 1920s, but continued to play banjo in the old style in string bands with Joe until the 1940s, when pressure from bluegrass and other newer musical forms made their approach all but obsolete. In the early '70s, folklorist Kip Lornell discovered the duo and convinced them to start playing the old music again, which led to a new career of festivals and concerts for Thompson and his cousin. Odell played banjo in the old clawhammer...

Boogaloo Down Broadway- The Fantastic Johnny C

Image
The Fantastic Johnny C is an American soul singer. Discovered by Jesse James while singing in a church choir, Corley adopted the stage name "The Fantastic Johnny C" and scored a top ten Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1967 with "Boogaloo Down Broadway", written by James, which peaked at number seven, followed by a minor hit, "Hitch It to the Horse", a year later. One of Corley's lesser known tracks, "Don't Depend on Me", is a staple on the British Northern Soul circuit.   If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, -  ”LIKE” ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Mario Bauza & His Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra

Image
Mario Bauzá (28 April 1911 – 11 July 1993) was an important Cuban musician. He was one of the first to introduce Latin music to the United States by bringing Cuban musical styles into the New York jazz scene. While Cuban bands had popular jazz tunes in their repertoire for years, Bauzá's composition "Tanga" was the first piece to blend jazz with clave, and is considered the first true Afro-Cuban jazz, or Latin jazz tune. Trained as a classical musician, he was a clarinetist in the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra by the age of nine, where he would stay for three years. Bauzá traveled to New York in 1925 to record with Maestro Antonio María Romeu's band, a charanga, shortly after his fourteenth birthday. Bauzá returned to Cuba but moved back to New York in 1930 and reputedly learned to play trumpet in just over two weeks in order to earn a spot in Don Azpiazú's Orchestra. This was in need of a trumpeter to play on recordings for RCA Victor. Bauzá had been hired as l...

Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams - Art Tatum w. Everett Barksdale

Image
Everett Barksdale (April 28, 1910, Detroit, Michigan - January 29, 1986, Inglewood, California) was an American jazz guitarist and session musician, Harold Vick's most used guitarist. Barksdale played bass and banjo before settling on guitar, and moved to Chicago early in the 1930s. His first major engagement there was in Erskine Tate's band, which he followed with a stint behind Eddie South. Toward the end of the decade he began collaborating with Benny Carter. In the early part of the next decade, Barksdale moved to New York City, where he found work in studios and on radio for CBS. Barksdale's credits as a session player in the 1940s and 1950s are extensive. He played with vocal ensembles such as The Blenders and The Clovers, and accompanied vocalists like Dean Barlow and Maxine Sullivan. Much of this work was due to his association with producer Joe Davis. He began working with Art Tatum late in the 1940s, taking Tiny Grimes's spot in his trio alongside bassist Sl...
