Smithsonian Folkways has been the ultimate vault for American roots music since 1948 , when founder Moses Asch started capturing raw, unvarnished sounds that mainstream labels ignored. Asch made it his mission to document the blues as living history, tracking legendary artists across decades. When the Smithsonian took over the catalog in 1987, they promised to keep every single recording permanently available, preserving the foundational DNA of American music. For years, their absolute gold-standard blues anthology was a 26-track CD from 2003 called Classic Blues . It packed 50 years of music—from the 1940s to the 1990s—into one masterclass collection, covering everything from gritty Delta styles to smooth Chicago electric tracks. It became a massive hit for the label, but vinyl fans had to wait more than twenty years to finally get it on wax. Simeon "Blind Simmie" Dooley (July 3, 1881 - January 17, 1961) was an American country blues singer and guitarist. Dooley was born in Hartwell, Georgia. Dooley met Pink Anderson in 1916 and taught him to play guitar. The two played on the street and at parties when Anderson was not traveling with Dr. Kerr's Medicine Show. In 1928 Dooley and Anderson went to Atlanta to record four pieces for Columbia Records. Two were published in the same year, the other two the following year. The records sold well. Anderson was invited to make further recordings without Dooley, however Anderson refused to be without Dooley. Dooley died from heart disease in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the age of 79. Pinkney "Pink" Anderson (February 12, 1900 – October 12, 1974) was a blues singer and guitarist, born in Laurens, South Carolina.
