I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Music Maker Foundation: Shelton Powe - Self Titled (Listener's Circle Volume 55) - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent Self-titled release, Shelton Powe and it's quite good. Opening with Amtrak Train, Shelton Powe on acoustic guitar and vocal sets a very authentic feel. With his tight Piedmont picking pattern, this is a solid opener. On John Hurt's Since I Laid My Burden Down, Powe adds real richness with his vocals against the acoustic guitar chant. Bukka White's, Shake "Em On Down is one of my favorite tracks on the release with an cool, primitive blues riff on what sounds like a primitive guitar. Excellent! Papa Charlie Jackson's Take Me Back is another captivating number with melody on guitar teamed with vocal, very effectively. I really like the simplicity of this track...what I like about the blues as a whole. Wrapping the release is John Jackson's Railroad Bill, an excellent Piedmont blues with Powe driving the fretboard like a locomotive. This is a really nice traditional blues release.

Shelton Powe Celebrates Another Year of Sharing His Music With the World
Shelton Powe
Happy Birthday Shelton!

Shelton Powe is celebrating his birthday on October 27th! Shelton joined Music Maker in 2011, and since then he's released an album on the Music Maker Label, played gigs across the country, and developed a following among Music Maker supporters. Meeting up with Music Maker couldn't have come sooner for Shelton. His machinery job began limiting his hours and eventually had to let him go - and as with so many of our artists who come to us with their amazing talent, his passion became his livelihood.

Over the past two years, we've worked with Shelton to develop his sound, book him gigs, get him a professional-quality instrument and create promotional items like his CD and photographs. When gigs were scarce, we helped him with basic needs. Shelton has since found work in his original field, but he still wants to share his music with the world. Shelton is an amazing artist with his medley of Gospel and Blues, and we're proud to be able to document his art for future generations.
Our Musical Development Program revitalizes, and in some cases, jump starts careers for artists like Shelton Powe. We help artists share their music with audiences worldwide, ensuring their voices are heard. As we head into our 20th Anniversary year, we hope you'll help us keep this program going with a gift to our Annual Fund today. Thank you for your support!
