I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Dancing Bear artist: Sunnysiders - The Bridges - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Bridges , from Sunnysiders and it's a cool blend of 60's rock and blues. Opening with shuffle track, Crossroads of Your Own , Croation  blues duo, Antonija Vrgoc Rola on vocal and tambourine and Boris Hrepic Hrepa on vocal, acoustic guitar and harp set out on their 4th release. With backing by Manu Lanvin on slide guitar and the Norman Beaker Trio featuring Beaker on bass, Steve Gibson on drums, Nick Steed on keys and Kim Kishikawara on sax to is a solid opener. Blues rocker, Tiny Soul has a real interesting melody highlighting Rola on lead vocal and melodic slide guitar adding very nice dynamics. Blockstop is a real rocker with raging drums and solid sax work by Kishikawara. My favorite track on the release is blues ballad, You're Not That Good For Me To Cry with  melodic electric guitar lead throughout and strong vocals by Rola. Not The One of Those is a solid rocker with a strong rock beat and cool ha...

Spona artist: Tomislav Goluban - Chicago Rambler - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Chicago Rambler , from Tomislav Goluban and it's quite entertaining. Opening with barn burner, Pigeon Swing , Croatian harp player, Goluban, blows the doors off. If there's any question if the blues is alive and living in Croatia, there shouldn't be now. Excellent jam with Eric Noden on guitar, E.G. McDaniel on bass, and Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith on drums. Bag Full Of Troubles is a cool shuffle track with Goluban on lead vocal and joined by Filisko on harp. Catching a Latin trade wind, Jerry Ricks On My Mind is a really cool track. I like it's unconventional melody and both Goluban and slide player Noden step up with interesting solos. Surf rocker, Home Made Honey , has a really cool beat and Noden's guitar riffs nicely accent Beedy Eyes' tight drum riffs leading into Goluban's ending solo. BoDiddley tom tom beat on Do The Right Thing really makes for a great showcase for Smith. Al...

Velvet Space Love - Tomislav Goluban, Featuring Toni Staresinic - New release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Velvet Space Love , by Tomislav Goluban , featuring Toni Staresinic and it's quite unusual for items I review. Opening with Zero Gravity , a somewhat spacey, atmospheric, composition featuring Goluban playing soulful harmonic melody over Staresinic's synth work. Space Drive is a continuation of a sonic fusion with what sounds like computer rhythm, Theremin, atmospheric keys and harp and guitar soloing. Very nice. One of my favorite tracks on the release is The Busiest Woman I've Ever Loved with a crisp jazz like rhythm. Goluban solos nicely over the key work of Staresinic backed by snappy drum work of Igor Vugrek, and bass of Damjan Grbac and punched up by Zvonimir Bajevic on trumpet, Robert Pulgar on sax and Mario Sinck on trombone. Very nice. Zero Gravity , Space Drive and Tsmk all get remixes with an emphasis on electronica, my favorite being Tsmk. Wrapping the release is Man With A Harmonica , an int...

Ruf Records artist: Vanja Sky - Bad Penny - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (August 17, 2018), Bad Penny from Vanja Sky and it's a pop rocker with zip. Opening with title track, Bad Penny , Vanja Sky wastes no time in demonstrating her no prisoners attitude with a swaggering track that could easily be from the Lynyrd Skynyrd songbook. Leading the band on guitar and vocal Sky is backed by Mike Zito on guitar, Terry Day on bass, Matthew Johnson on drums and Lewis Stephens on keys. Low Down And Dirty is my favorite track on the release with what to me sounds like Mike Zito on vocal and slide guitar. This track has a gritty two step feel with cool guitar lead and vocals by Sky making this track hot hot hot! All Night has a poppy/rock feel with firm rhythm guitar and polished vocals by Sky. Ballad, Inside Pain has a smooth Mark Knopfler guitar feel and a solid radio melody. Another of my favorites is Give Me Back My Sou l with a great SRV /Texas lope with Dave Smith on bass and Yonrico Scott ...

Key To The Highway - Joe Filisko and Eric Noden with Predrag Lovrinčević on harp and Ivan Gilić on piano

Image
Joe Filisko gets a wide variety of sounds from his harmonica including soaring melodies and driving percussive rhythms. He can make his harp cry, flutter, sing or sound like a train from one moment to the next. He is known around the world both as a player, historian and as a customizer of this often misunderstood instrument. Filisko’s customized Marine Band harmonicas have been played by many world renowned artists including Charlie Musselwhite, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy Arnold and Wade Schuman of Hazmat Modine. Eric Noden sings, shouts and stomps while conjuring old spirits from the strings of his acoustic guitar. Varying his approach from song to song, Noden draws from a deep well of American music that fuels his high energy performing style. His right hand thumb often lays down a driving bass figure that weaves around intricate melodic parts played with his fingers. This style, favored by early bluesmen like Charley Patton and Blind Blake is rarely used by modern guitar playe...
