💿 ALBUM REVIEW: Leigh Pilzer - Keep Holding On

Image
Get ready to groove with Dr. Leigh Pilzer , the Washington, D.C. baritone sax powerhouse who proves that jazz is meant to be a living, breathing party, not a dusty museum piece. Described as a pure force of nature with a gruff, punchy, and assertive sound, Leigh brings a heavy dose of soulful grit to the stage. She has traded licks with the legendary Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and even arranged horns for local legends like Chuck Brown and Eva Cassidy , and now she is bringing that deep, soulful swagger front and center with her vibrant new album, Keep Holding On. This record is a masterclass in pure, undeniable groove, packed with plenty of attitude, low-end bark, and raw energy that blues fans will instantly appreciate. Keep Holding On strikes the perfect balance between paying respect to the jazz heritage and absolutely cutting loose, making it an essential, high-energy addition to your playlist.   🎵 LISTEN & SUPPORT THE ALBUM   Keep Holding On by Leigh ...

VizzTone Label Group artist: Tony Holiday - Soul Service - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Soul Service , from Tony Holiday , and is solid throughout. Opening with Payin' Rent on a Broken Home , a strong blues rocker, Tony Holiday on lead vocal and harmonica sets a cool strutting pace, backed by Landon Stone on guitar, Max Kaplan on bass, Danny Banks on drums with Ori Naftaly on guitar and Victor Wainwright on keys. Low slung shuffle She knocks Me Out , has a great feel and Holiday's harmonica tone is full and a tasty work solo by Stone is poised and tight. A cool island feel spins Day Dates (Turn Into Night Dates). With simplified drum rhythms and airy guitar work Holiday crafts this track nicely and blends vocally with Kaplan, complimented by melodic harmonica. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Ol' Number Nine, a rumbling blues rocker with nicely paired vocals and a rumbling bass line by Kaplan. Holiday's vocals are strong and his harmonica work reinforces the "train" theme of ...

New Release: A True Friend (Is Hard To Find) - Ori Naftaly - Review

Image
I just received a copy of Ori Naftaly's new release, A True Friend (Is Hard To Find). The release is packed full of blues tracks. The recording consists of 10 tracks, many of which are covers of contemporary songs. The first track, Devil Red Blues , is an acoustic number with Ori, an acoustic guitar and harmonica. It is obviously recorded on modern equipment but captures the spirit of the Delta. Most of the instrumentation is done by Ori but he does have the help of fellow vocalists Sagol 59, Roy Young, Tempa Singer Nave, Dive Hammer, Dor Nagar and Eleanor Tsaig. I'm A Woman has a modern feel and Ori is joined by Nave on vocals giving Ori the chance to show off his electrical guitar talents. Ori covers Sonny Boy (Help Me) , Elmore James (Dust My Broom) , Muddy (I'm A Man and She's 19 Years Old) , Willie Dixon (Don't Go No Further) , David Crosby (Almost Cut My Hair) , James Brown (It's A Man's World) and finally the title track which I believ...
