Bman's Blues Report

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, All In , by Gil Livni and it's terrific! Opening with Wonder Woman , Gil Livni is hot out of the gate with scorching hot guitar riffs with Amit Friedman on sax sharing the floor. Yonatan Riklis on organ and Yonatan Rosen on drums round out the band for one of the hottest openers I've heard in a long time. Excellent! Bluesy shuffle, All In is led by Friedman on sax and Rosen on drums. Holds it tight. Friedman really gets this track rolling with incredible phrasing warmed by Rikles on organ. I love Livni's jazz blues fusion soloing  with great contrast by Riklis who lines up his own organ attack. Really stellar. A Latin fusion twist on Lennon/ McCarthy composition , I Want You , is so cool. With it's spot on rhythm by Rosen, interesting rework, excellent guitar lead by Livni, and earthy exploration by Friedman and deep organ tension by Rikles... wow! I just received the newest release (July 1, 2014), All In , from Dave Fields and it's quite strong. Opening with Changes In My Life , a blues shaped rocker, Fields,playing most all instruments lays out a pop blues rocker with a catchy feel and blues riffs blended with modern tapping techniques making for an interesting change of pace. Voodoo Eyes is up next with more of a ballad style but with a cool rhythm. Fields again steps up with some really nice guitar riffs and key work that nicely highlights the track. Let's Go Downtown has a really happy feel and pacing march rhythm not a lot unlike what you might expect from Wet Willie or Elvin Bishop. This is a cool track with strong blues guitar riffs. Yeah, he has a better voice than my pal Crabshaw, but I ain't holding that against him. Nice track. Dragon Fly takes a much more serious approach to the music with more of an orchestral arrangement, powerful bottom and soaring guitar. Cream's (Robert Johnson) Cross Road ...

I just received the newest release (August 21, 2014), All In , from Lefty Williams and it's quite good. Lefty, who gets his nickname from the amount of work he can get done on the guitar using primarily his left hand, has put together a short list of slick tracks which blend, pop, jazz, blues and R&B. Opening with Crescent , a funky jazzy track with a flavor of New Orleans, Williams shows he has a great sense of style and a strong voice. He is joined by Richie Mays (slide guitar), Steve Mays (bass), Kofi Burbridge (keys), Yonrico Scott (drums), Ethan Levitt (sax), Hardian Mendoza (trumpet) and Joseph Jenkins (bari sax). This is a tight unit with a great sound. Let It Roll On has a bit more of a laid back style with more of a southern rock flair and slide guitar/piano riffs bridging the vocal lead.
