Brother Dege - Farmer's Almanac - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Farmer's Almanac , from Brother Dege and it's a more refined progression on his earlier foundations. Opening with Partial To Bitters , a somber instrumental, Dege crafts a very interesting fabric of music on guitar and slide joined by Doug Belote on drums and Kent Beatty on bass. The Shakedown has a really strong feel with Greg Travasos on kick drum and Deje on vocal and resonator. The drumming by Travasos and the frenzied playing by Deje really gets this one cranked up. The Ballad of Ingo Swann is a solid rocker with powerful vocals and a jagged beat and almost UK euro rock feel making this a definite stand out track. Laredo is on of my favorites on the release with swampy rock roots and penetrating slide work. Very nice. Wrapping the release is Partial To Bitters Pt. II . As it begins ... so it ends with a haunting melody and well crafted scenes. Very cool.    If you support live Blues acts, up an...

Brother Dege - Scorched Earth Policy: Deluxe - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Scorched Earth Policy: Deluxe , from Brother Dege and it's a smart blend of swamp blues, rock, pop and psychedelia. Opening with Set It Off , a marching rocker, Dege's slide work paired with intense drumming and sonic vocals makes this a natural radio track. With a more rural feel, Pay No Mind has the sound of the pure south utilizing slide resonator behind solid vocals and basic rudimentary percussion. Somewhere has a polished feel with a cool bass line from Ian Guidros and supporting drums from Greg Travasos. Dege's vocals and guitar work are almost hypnotic. Day I Was Born has a real somber melody accompanied by resonator slide and including guitar work by Howie Wells and Danny Devillier on drums. This is a cool track with a heavy feel, kind of like a southern Led Zep. Black Sabbath's Supernaut has a lively almost European feel. Lead slide resonator and a solid drum beat moves this track. Yellabone is an interesting composit...

BROTHER DEGE HITS THE ROAD IN SUPPORT OF HIS NEW " SCORCHED EARTH POLICY " DIGITAL SUMMER MIXTAPE OUT NOW!   DEGE SHARES HIS NEW SONG "SET IT OFF" CLICK HERE TO LISTEN AND POST Ever since his music has been featured in Quentin Tarantino's film Django Unchained as well as the Discovery Channel and the National Geographic Channel, Brother Dege (AKA Dege Legg) can no longer lay claim to being "one of the best kept secrets in the Deep South." Dege is a musician, writer, workingman and heir to a long line of unusual characters born and raised in the southern U.S. Like the mad lovechild of Son House, Faulkner and Patti Smith, Legg has burned a crooked trail to the Promised Land. Avoiding traditional career paths, he has spent as much time exploring the backwoods weirdness of his home state as he has forging his own brand of incendiary, "psyouthern" roots music. The journeys are parallel. Since the late '90s...

BROTHER DEGE PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR HIS TRACK "TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG" - THE SONG QUENTIN TARANTINO HAND-PICKED FOR HIS NEW FILM "DJANGO UNCHAINED"   CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE TO WATCH BROTHER DEGE'S "TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG" Brother Dege ("deej") (aka Dege Legg) is one of the best-kept secrets in the Deep South. A musician, writer and Southern enigma, Dege is the haunted face of 21st century Delta blues . Like the possessed offspring of Faulkner and Son House, he plays slide guitar in the age-old tradition of the blues greats, yet manages to breathe new life into this revered Delta idiom. The reclusive Louisiana Cajun's song "Too Old To Die Young" was recently selected by Quentin Tarantino to appear in the soundtrack of his new film Django Unchained , which just opened in theaters on Christmas day. Tarantino was recently interviewed on SiriusXM Radio’s show Little Steven’s Underground Garage ...
