Bman's Blues Report

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Slim Pickin' , from Mississippi MacDonald and it's strong. Opening with Trouble Doing The Right Thing , Mississippi MacDonald shows his ability to deliver in a big way with just a mic and an acoustic guitar. His soulful voice and R&B guitar styling is backed by Brent Cundall on bass and Phil Dearing on percussion. Super opener. My Bad Attitude , another track with a firm R&B feel, gives Mac a great stage for his gritty yet soulful vocals and acoustic guitar backing and light snare work is just the right touch. An interesting take on Blind Willie McTell's Statesboro Blues is fresh with none of the trademark feeling that Taj Mahal or Duane Allman put on the track, propelling it into rock fame. With a more original Piedmont fingerpicking style, this is a terrific addition. St. Louis Jimmy Oden's Going Down Slow really is cool with a slow, easy roll and acoustic style backing.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, I Got What You Need , from Mississippi MacDonald and it's a strong blend of blues and soul. Opening with rumbling blues, I've Got What You Need with it's stinging Albert Collins like lead guitar and thick bluesy lead vocals by Mississippi MacDonald, backed by Eliott Boughen on bass, Jim Kimberley on drums, Phil Dearing on guitars and keys and Lucy Randall on backing vocals, the release is off to a great start. Slow blues, Stop! Think About It! is one of my favorite tracks on the release with gripping Albert King influenced lead guitar work MacDonald really knows how to pour it on. 3.35 AM is a cool guitar instrumental with a rocking beat. Very cool. Gospel classic, If I Could Only Hear My Mother Pray Again with excellent lead and backing vocals and excellent lead guitar work over Dearing's organ. Very nice.   I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Heavy State Loving Blues , from Mississippi MacDonald and it's a R&B infused blues rocker. Opening with Howlin' Wolf a driving R&B track with Booker T like rhythm and Albert King style overlay on guitar by Mississippi who also leads on vocal this track is humping. Phil Dearing on guitars and keys, Elliot Boughen really romping the bass, and Texas Joe McRoury on drums holds the bottom tight. Another driving R&B flavored track, Blind Leading The Blind really shows just how soulful Mississippi's vocals are. Again Boughen's contribution on bass is vital and Vaneese Thomas on duet vocal is terrific. Mississippi's guitar work is stinging and keyboard horn work by Dearing really balances things out. Really nice. Heading South is dripping with funk with smoking hot guitar riffs by Mississippi and a strong vocal line that pays the bill.  I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Do Right, Say Right , from Mississippi MacDonald and  I really like it. Opening with easy shuffle, I Was Wrong , Mississippi MacDonald is firing on all cylinders with a great soulful voice and fat, BB King like guitar phrasing, joined by Phil Dearing on keys, Elliot Boughen on bass and Mark Johnson-Brown on drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release is funky blues, It Can't Hurt Me with it's Albert King influenced guitar riffs and MacDonalds solid vocals. Organ and horn accents throughout buy Dearing really punch up the track and aggressive bass lead by Boughen adds real bottom. Check out the tasty guitar lead on Drinker's Blues . MacDonals's fat bends and double stop accents really sets this track with strong backing vocals by Lucy Dearing. Mississippi MacDonald is a blues musician from London, UK. He has been playing since he was 11 years old and has travelled extensively on the US blues trail. He has met BB King, Pinetop Perkins, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith and Lucky Peterson.
