One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Louise - Wesley Jefferson

Image
Bassist, vocalist, and bandleader Wesley Jefferson has been a stalwart of the Clarksdale blues scene since the mid-1960s. He was born in Roundaway in Coahoma County on March 23, 1944, the oldest boy of thirteen children. As a youth he picked and chopped cotton, plowed with mules and later with a tractor, and lived in extreme poverty. He recalls being influenced by his grandfather, Claude Jefferson, who played guitar at his home in Clarksdale. He also furtively listened to records by “deep blues” artists at a juke joint run by his mother “way out in the field,” where they sold catfish and moonshine made by his stepfather. Local musicians who he saw playing at small venues in the country included the one-man-band “Popeye,” guitarist Ernest Roy—“the best guitarist I ever seen,” and the band led by Tutwiler’s Lee Kizart, who hauled his piano from gig to gig. Jefferson first played blues on a diddley bow on the wall of his house, and was first able to buy a guitar after he moved to Memphis ...

Don't Explain - Beth Hart - Joe Bonamassa - New Release Review

Image
I just received the long awaited release by Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart. Every release that Joe is doing now seems to be reaching in a different direction. He appears to be exploring the musical universe. Where earlier releases we mostly pure blues with a few ballads mixed and exploration into album oriented rock music, in and the later releases "Black Country Communion" he got a little heavier edge. In this release he has teamed up with "Star Search" Winner Beth Hart and really more showcasing her vocal talents with his guitar as a featured instrument. Where Jeff beck has staid the course with only a few vocal interludes with female vocalists, Joe has jumped in with both feet. The duo explores old blues traditional songs, a Melody Gardot ballad,a Billy Holiday number and even a Delaney Bramlett (Delaney and Bonnie) song. The recording is very well done and although not dominant like on many earlier releases, there are still some real biting guitar solos throughou...

Delmark Records Presents: Bad Girl - Demetria Taylor

Image
First I have to comment on the cover of this release. I am so used to all of the fancy covers on all cd's that this one kinda caught me off guard. It is very reminiscent of the covers of old soul albums old the 60's. I don't know if it is intentional or coincidental but it's what's inside that counts. And after listening to the release, I think the cover is respectful. I had not been earlier exposed to Demetria or knew of her through her father, the great Eddie Taylor. Now with all this against her, I am listening to the cd and i got to tell you I am pleasantly surprised. The release sounds authentic and not a clone of everyone who came before her. She has a grindy blues voice and the band is tight. The recording isn't just Demetria singing but there is a chance for the band including Billy Branch, Eddie Shaw, Eddie Taylor jr., Shun Kinkuta, Roosevelt Purifoy, Greg McDaniel, Pookie Styx and Luke Pytel to stretch out "Chicago style". Of the new cd's...

I'll Play the Blues for You - Terry "Big T" Williams

Image
Terry “Big T” Williams has dedicated his life to his music. Born in Clarksdale in 1960, he spent his early years on a plantation in Farrell, Mississippi, hearing stories about Muddy Waters attending Sunday picnics in his grandmother’s yard. These influences, as well as the music he was hearing on the radio by Deltans such as B.B. King, had an impact on him at a very young age. At nine, Big T’s father gave him a guitar and so he took it upon himself to learn how to play. Eventually, Big T came under the tutelage of legendary blues educator Johnnie Billington He was twelve years old when the Jelly Roll Kings (Big Jack Johnson, Frank Frost and Sam Carr) took him under their wing and eventually even took him on the road all over the world. But Big T knew he eventually wanted to front his own band, and over the years he has been with bands like The Creative Funk, The Stone Gas Band and Big T & The Family Band. Today, Big T and his Review Band play gigs all over, but he is especially fon...

A Hundred White Lies - Shane Dwight - New recording release review

Image
I have been listening to this cd for the past 4 or so days because I wanted to pin it down and write an appropriate review for it. No I'm not one of those guys who puts on a cd, listens to a track for 10 seconds, listens to the next one,,,reads the promo materials and then writes a review... so sometimes it just isn't that simple. The cd is strong. It's just hard to get your hands around. There is a mixture of sounds and great guitar playing here and I just keep listening to it. It doesn't have the big hook of ZZ Top or the stellar playing of Joe Bonamassa but it is just a great strong recording and I'm just not getting tired of listening to it... plain and simple. Good singing, good guitar, good rhythm, good piano... I can't tell you what it sounds like. All I can tell you is I've probably heard it 20 times and I'm not tired of it yet. Buy a copy and write me and tell me what it is! Enjoy!

Chicago bluesman 'Honeyboy' Edwards dead at 96 - Chicago Tribune

Image
David "Honeyboy" Edwards, a bluesman who was a living, breathing link to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday morning of congestive heart failure while resting at home, according to the performer's official website. He was 96. Born in 1915, Edwards left home when he was 14 years old, to perform with Big Joe Williams. It was a life on the road that the classic Delta blues player continued right up to April of this year, when his health took a turn for the worse. His last live outings were in Mississippi, on April 16 and 17. The list of musicians that Edwards played with is immense, also serving as a Who's Who of great blues artists. Edwards has worked with Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Big Joe Williams, Rice “Sonny Boy Williamson” Miller, Howlin’ Wolf, Sunnyland Slim, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Walter, Little Walter, Magic Sam, Muddy Waters. Edwards’ career included several hit songs, such as “Long Tall Woman Blues,” “Gamblin Man” and “Just Like Jesse James.” H...

Nobody's Fault But Mine - Led Zeppelin

Image
Led Zeppelin were an English rock band that formed in 1968 and consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. With their heavy, guitar-driven blues rock sound, Led Zeppelin are regularly cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal and hard rock, even though the band's individualistic style drew from many sources and transcends any one music genre. Led Zeppelin did not release songs from their albums as singles in the United Kingdom, as they preferred to establish the concept of album-orientated rock. Led Zeppelin disbanded following Bonham's death in 1980, but continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band is widely considered to be one of the most successful, innovative and influential bands in the history of rock music. Led Zeppelin have sold over 200 million albums worldwide according to some sources, while other sources state sales...

Nobody's Fault But Mine - BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON

Image
"Blind" Willie Johnson (January 22, 1897 – September 18, 1945) was an American singer and guitarist whose music straddled the border between blues and spirituals. While the lyrics of all of his songs were religious, his music drew from both sacred and blues traditions. Among musicians, he is considered one of the greatest slide or bottleneck guitarists, as well as one of the most revered figures of depression-era gospel music.[citation needed] His music is distinguished by his powerful bass thumb-picking and gravelly false-bass voice, with occasional use of a tenor voice.

Let me Love You Baby - Lightnin' Malcolm

Image
Music has always been part of Lightnin’ Malcolm’s heart and soul. From the moment he discovered an old raggedy guitar w/ a couple of strings and cassette of Muddy Waters his life and the music world would change forever. Malcolm’s journey began near the railroad tracks in rural Southeast Missouri. For several years Malcolm traveled the world spreading his love for the blues. It wasn’t until Malcolm settled in North Mississippi that he had a musical epiphany. He was drawn to the hill country blues first made famous by Fred McDowell and later R.L. Down The Road a Piece - Amos Milburn

One commentator noted, "Milburn excelled at good-natured, upbeat romps about booze and partying, imbued with a vibrant sense of humour and double entendre, as well as vivid, down-home imagery in his lyrics. Born in Houston, one of thirteen children, by the age of five years Milburn was playing tunes by piano. He enlisted in the United States Navy when he was fifteen and earned thirteen battle stars in the Philippines, before returning to Houston and organizing a sixteen-piece band playing in Houston clubs, and participating with the Houston jazz and blues musicians. He was a polished pianist and performer and during 1946 attracted the attention of a woman who arranged a recording session with Aladdin Records in Los Angeles, California. Milburn's relationship with Aladdin lasted eight yea...

Edmonton's LaBatt Blues Festival reflections- correspondent Bob Corritore

Image
Edmonton's LaBatt Blues Festival reflections. Thanks to festival producers Cam Hayden and Carrol Deen for an amazing experience last weekend at Edmonton's Labatt Blues Festival, in the Canadian province of Alberta. What makes this festival so special is the loving, knowledgeable lineup that Cam and Carrol book each year, combined with a great venue, stage, and sound system, an impeccable volunteer staff, and a warm and appreciative blues-loving audience. I had the privilege of playing 2 slots on 2 separate days at the festival: Saturday with the Dave Riley / Bob Corritore Juke Joint Blues Band bringing a rural Mississippi flavor to the proceedings, and on Sunday with the Delta Blues Harp Blast which boasted a top shelf lineup of Randy Chortkoff, Mitch Kashmar, Bob Corritore, and Big Pete plus Kirk Fletcher, Paris Slim, Rob Rio, Willie Campbell, and Jimi Bott. I was very proud of my contributions to the festival which also included being called up for a couple numbers on the s...
