Alligator Records artist: Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials - Slideways - New Release Review

 I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Slideways , from Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials and it's terrific! Opening with Bad All By Myself , Lil' Ed on lead guitar and vocal, gets things rocking right off the bat. With Michael Garrett playing a strong rhythm line reinforced by James "Pookie" Young and Kelly Littleton on drums, this is a great opener. The Flirt In The Car Wash Skirt is a great blues rocker with raucous slide work by Lil' Ed and Ben Levin on piano really gets this track boogieing. Vital rhythm guitar work by Garrett and a rock solid bottom makes this one of my favorites on the release. Elmore James flavored, 13th Street And Trouble , is a strong track with a pounding bottom and super piano work by Levin. Lil' Ed has this track by the short hairs and is really shaking it. Cooking! Laid back Chicago blues , More Time , has solid pacing and features Lil' Ed upfront on lead vocal. Garrett showcases his lead gui...

Just received a copy of the newest release cd by The Hamburg Blues Band. The recording has twelve tracks and a number of impressive names including Chris Farlowe, Clem Clemson and Maggie Bell. Immediately noticeable are great blues riffs from Clemson throughout. Bells vocals on Free's "Wishing Well" are still strong bringing back recollections of Stone the Crows and solo efforts. Into the night, an original song, has strong appeal with again nice guitar work by Clemson. It Ain't Right and Trouble Man vocal harmonies put you in mind of Steely Dan if they played the blues. Nice guitar work again by Clem. Both of these songs demonstrate that Clemson hasn't been sitting around on his laurels. Sing The Blues for You , an update on a BB King style song has a few tasty extended instrumental solos. Overall this album is worth a good listen. These guys are workin it.

It's funny how life comes around. One of the best all around blues rock albums I have ever hear is Humble Pie "Smokin". If you havent had the chance, you gotta listen. Humble Pie was originally Peter Framptons band but he had a dispute with his friend Steve Marriott and decided to go his own way and go solo. He was replaced by Clem Clemson and they cut the hottest crossover album made in it's time. If you don't know Steve Marriott watch for another post. He was one terrific singer.
