Andy and Nick have become one of the
most acclaimed duos in the blues. Andy T’s jazz-tinged guitar style is
influenced by T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Magic Sam, and Albert Collins among
others, yet it remains his own. The velvet-voiced Nixon, part of Nashville’s
thriving blues and R&B scene in the 60’s and 70’s, sings in a style that
recalls Jimmy Witherspoon and Billy Eckstine. Even though he’s now in his
70’s, Nixon’s voice still has all the power and energy of a man half his age
and it’s crystal clear that this man was born to sing the blues.
As Blues Underground Network said, “Simply put, Andy T and James ‘Nick’ Nixon have quickly risen to the top of many people's lists of Great Collaborations.” The previous two releases by the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band, produced by noted Texas guitarist Anson Funderburgh, were critically acclaimed, with both garnering coveted Blues Music Award nominations
Elmore magazine said of Numbers Man, "Anson
Funderburgh again produces and this time adds the Texas Horns as well as Kim Wilson
on one track. Andy T plays a clean guitar, mostly in the style of T-Bone
Walker while 74-year-old Nixon is as good a blues singer as any. This band
just gets better with each recording."
Said Andy, "We are thrilled to debut on the Billboard Blues Chart with such an amazing group of artists. Many thanks to Blind Pig Records for their support." |

I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Delta Groove Music artist: Andy T - Nick Nixon Band - Livin' It Up - New release Review
I just received the newest release (June 17, 2014), Livin' It Up, from Andy T - Nick Nixon Band and it really hits the spot. Opening with Baby Right Now, a cool 12 bar number highlights Nick Nixon on vocals and Andy T with some sweet guitar riffs. On Best In Town, a Jimmy Reed like tune, Christian Dozzler steps in with a cool harp solo and Larry Van Loon provides solid piano work in support of Nick and Andy. Delbert McClinton's Livin' It Down, a light Latin twist give this track just the right amount of spice. Bassist Sam Persons adds rhythm guitar on this track and Ron Jones beefs things up a bit on sax. Jim Klinger keep a tight rhythm on drums and Nixon really does a nice job on the vocals on this track. T - Bone Walker's, My Baby Is Now On My Mind, gives Andy a really nice format to play some tasty T-Bone inspired riffs. Dossler takes the piano role on this track pushing Andy just enough to get him swinging. Very nice! Good Man is a deep Texas blues and Andy is diggin in from the first note playing some of the bluest guitar riffs on the release. Nixon has great voice and complimented by Van loon on piano, this track is perfect for highlighting his style. Excellent! One Note Shuffle is a great romp featuring Dana Robbins on sax and Van loon on B3. Andy steps up laying down some really nice riffs for a really cool, easy going instrumental. Back Down South is a low slung blues number with hot vocals from Nixon and stinging guitar riffs from Andy. Ron Jones adds a roundness to the overall track as well as a cool solo with his solid sax work. Boogie rocker, Last To Leave, features Dozzler on slick piano riffs, some hot horn work from Robbins and Andy lays down some tasty guitar riffs supporting Nixon with his powerful vocals. On Let's Say It's For Good, an easy swing track, Van Loon and Andy each lay down some really nice licks. Snake In The Grass has a funky beat and Nixon gets right in the groove. Van Loon on B3 does a really nice job and Andy plays more slashing style riffs on rhythm guitar before laying out a cool funky guitar solo grabbing it up tight. Spiritually infused, Whatever You Had You Ain't Got It No More is a really cool track and not only are Nixons vocals powerful, I really like the effects created by Jones on sax. Andy stands tall with his guitar followed by a really cool sax solo from Robbins. On R&B track, Oh Baby, the band is steppin high and Andy gets right on the top with pure style. This track is particularly well suited for Nixon's vocal style. Robbins puts up a full sax solo adding to the muster on this track. Wrapping the track is Love At First Sight, a soul style ballad, featuring heartfelt vocals by Nixon, gospel style piano work from Van loon and nice sax soloing from Dana Robbins.
This is a solid release which is quite soothing.

Delta Groove Music artist: Andy T- Nick Nixon Band - Drink Drank Drunk - New release Review
I just received the highly anticipated Andy T - Nick Nixon Band release, Drink Drank Drunk and it's a scorcher! Opening with Midnight Hour, Nick Nixon shows why he is highly regarded as a top vocalist. A Texas swing blues, this track features hot guitar riffs by Andy T and Ron Jones on sax. Don't Touch Me Baby, a classic R&B style blues again spotlights Nixon on vocals with really sweet filler leads by Andy T. Andy holds back on the chance to just blow out every note in the neck and perfectly tweaks out an incredibly soulful solo. The title track, Drink Drank Drunk, has a really nice groove and features Jones again on sax. Andy plays a really tasty solo on this track showing his flair for dynamics rather than constant filler. Have You Seen My Monkey opens with Christian Dozzler on accordion giving it a definite Louisiana flare. This is a comical track painting graphic imagery but again featuring hot riffs from Andy T on guitar and excellent vocals from Nixon. This is bound to be a crowd favorite. Dos Danos opens with Jones playing a sax melody and setting the mood for guest guitarist Anson Funderburgh to lay down a hot instrumental track with John Garza (bass), Dozzler (piano), John Street (organ) and Danny Cochran (drums). No End To The Blues opens with a hot riff from Andy playing in what I'd term as BB King style with Nixon sharing the mike with Markey. Andy plays some of the tastiest riffs on the recording on this track with Steve Mackey (bass), Kevin McKendree (piano),Larry van Loon (organ) and Jim Klingler (drums). On Hi Heel Sneakers, Funderburgh joins the crew again with some hot riffs of his own but really only in a complimentary manner to Nixon's voice. Another favorite from the recording, Life Is Too Short, finds Nixon really singing from the heart and Andy playing some of that guitar that makes you nod your head on the off beat because it just catches you in "that spot"! You Look So Good adds Brian "Hash Brown" Calway on harp and again joined by Funderburgh the band cranks out a real sweet Texas blues number. Wrapping up the recording is Ray Charles' I've Got A Woman. Not many people could pull off a Ray Charles track without it sounding stale but Nixon sounds great and the addition of Dozzler on accordion gives the song a party feel.
It's a little early in the year to start to talk much of "Bman's Best of Yea"r list, but this will definitely be a candidate!
