Blue Heart Records artist: Skylar Rogers - Among The Insanity - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Among The Insanity, from Skylar Rogers and it's a soulful symphony. Opening with Love In The Left Lane, Skylar Rogers lays down a smokey, swamp funky track. Showing the way on lead vocal, backed by Teresa James and Terry Wilson on backing vocals, WG Snuffy Walden on guitar, Terry Wilson on bass, Bennett Salvay on keys, Brannen Temple on drums and Darrell Leonard on horns, this is a powerful opener. R&B ballad, One Last Kiss has a solid melody and really showcases the melodic strength of Rogers' vocals. This is easily the best radio track on this release. Soulful, Between Friends is another favorite with excellent lead vocal by Rogers, it's dark undertones and keyboard/horn harmony. Wrapping the release is another strong powerful vocal track, Apology Not Accepted, allowing Rogers great air to sing. With primary accompaniment by Salvay on keys and tasty guitar riffs by Walden, this is an excellent closer for a solid release.

Blue Heart Records artist: Sister Lucille - Tell The World - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Tell The World, from Sister Lucille, and it's a contemporary blues rocker with plenty of drive. On title track, Tell The World, Kimberly Dill on lead vocal sets the stage with excellent, wah soaked, guitar riffs by Jamie Holdren, Al Gamble on organ, Chris Stephenson on B3, Kevin Lyons on drums and Reed Smith Herron on bass. R&B influenced, Breakin' My Heart features Holdren on lead vocal laying down a funky rhythm and with a real nice solo making this a solid radio contender. Devil In A Red Suit has a more forward rock style featuring Holdren on lead vocal and a cool retro style. I particularly like  Lyons' drum work and Holdren gets loose with some real nice riffs. Wrapping the release is up tempo two stepper, Soulful Dress and Dill really belts out with bluesy feel. Peter Climie on sax, Will Paladino on trumpet and Freedman Steorts on trombone add some real nice accent work on horns and Holdren's country influenced guitar riffs make this my favorite track on the release and a strong closer.

Blue Heart Records artist: Teresa James - With A Little Help From Her Friends - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, With A Little Help From Her Friends, from Teresa James and it's quite good. Everybody knows the Beatles songbook and many of their tracks have been covered but James has really done a nice job in reinterpreting this list of top tracks. Opening with Ticket To Ride, Teresa James shows all of the style that she's known for and with a Texas saunter and with a strong bottom by Terry Wilson on bass and Richard Millsap on drums, super keys by Kevin McKendree and excellent guitar riffs by Wilson. Don't Let Me Down was an excellent choice for this set. James' voice is made for it and McKendree on piano and organ really works nicely with Wilson on slide. Excellent. Oh Darlin' sets itself nicely as a blues ballad and pairing James' vocals with Yates McKendree on lead guitar really is stellar. Beautiful, You Won't See Me, is really an excellent choice with soulful vocals by James and just the right blend of keys and guitar, making this another standout track of all the outstanding tracks. McKendree takes a real nice key solo keeping this track mellow. Wrapping the release is Think For Yourself with a swaying bluesy feel. James' vocals are blended into a harmony really is sweet and has just the right feel. This is a strong closer for a thoroughly enjoyable release.

Blue Heart Records artist: Tomislav Goluban - 20 Years On The Road - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, 20 Years On The Road, from Tomislav Goluban and it's chocked full of great blues harp. Opening with blues rocker, Express Ride, blues harp wiz Tomislav Goluban really has it cranking, backed by the Tobacco Road Blues Band (Peter Prammerdorfer on guitar, Mike Diwald on guitar, Christian Egger on bass and Klaus Sauli on drums. On shuffle, Searchin' For My Baby features Skylar Rogers on lead vocal and she does a real nice job. With Goluban on harmonica, Hrvoje Funda on guitar, Vid Kotarski on guitar, Jurica Leikauff on keys, Tomislav Kusar on bass and Dragutin Hojsak on drums, a real nice jam. With a twist of country, Ryan Donohue leads the way on No Means No. Mike Sponza and Funda on guitars, Vid Bajevic on trumpet, Mario Sincek on trombone, Damjan Grbac on bass, and Igor Vugrek compliment Goluban on harmonica. Another track with a taste of country is Speedin' Train featuring the super vocals of Teresa James. Goluban really wails the whistle and with a solid bottom compliments of Funda, Kitarski, Leikauff, Kusar and Hojsak, this may be my favorite track on the release. Shuffle, I Can't Take It Anymore has a great feel and saturated with harmonica. Crooked Eye Tommy is upfront on vocal anchoring this bluesy track. Boggie, Everyday's Fear, has a great drive and Goluban sails, courtesy Funda, Kotarski, Jurica Leikauff, Damjan Grbac and Vugrek and featuring Kelly Zirbes on lead vocal. Wrapping the release is rock and roller,  I Love You Baby with Goluban on lead vocal. This is a solid closer for a cool release.

Blue Heart Records artist: Dave Keyes - Rhythm Blues & Boogie - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Rhythm Blues & Boogie by Dave Keyes and it's name says it all. Opening with Memphis flavored R&B on Shake Shake Shake on piano and lead vocal backed by Bernard Purdie on drums, Jeff Anderson on bass, and the power of Chris Eminizer on sax and Tim Quimette on trumpet. Solid opener. Another big swinger, Blues and Boogie has a little New Orleans spice and Keyes piano work shines again with power horns by Eminizer and Quimette and a real nice guitar solo by Early Times. Takin it to the street New Orleans style, Ain't Doing That No More has a great drum beat by Purdie and Eminizer and Quimette punch up the back. John Putnam on slide guitar really nails it and of course Keyes vocal and piano lead is terrific. Not Fighting Anymore is spiced up even more with a Latin beat by Pagano on drums and percussion adds backing vocals, with firm horn backing by Quimette and Eminizer and strong lead vocal by Keyes. David J Keyes has bass on this number and Popa Chubby guests on guitar. Doug MacLeod adds spoken word and lays in a cool acoustic guitar solo on Invisible Man and Keyes on vocal and straight up boogie piano sets the tempo for this one. Wrapping the release is 7 O'clock Somewhere, a rockin boogie with a cool piano lead and Wurlitzer by Keyes, Putnam ripping on guitar and Pagano on drums. This is a strong closer for a very enjoyable release.

Blue Heart Records artist: Lil' Red & The Rooster - Keep On! - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Keep On!, from Lil' Red & The Rooster and it's a lot of fun. Opening with Cool Trap Boogie, the tempo is set by Felton Crews on bass and Kenny "Beedyeyes" Smith on drums and Jean-Marc Labbe' on bari sax really runs the groove. Jen "Lil Red" Milligan on lead vocals on vocal leads the way and Pascal "Rooster" Fouquet adds really nice guitar riffs. Solid opener. Billy Branch joins on Keep On Lovin You adding really nice harmonica lead and in duet with Jen on lead vocals. A laid back blues, gives Fouquet a real nice avenue to solo on guitar and his fluid lead runs really shine on this track. I love the tone that Fouquet gets on guitar on instrumental, Shakin' Em Up, with a strong bari sax support and great flair on solo by Labbe' over a cool rhythm by Crews and Smith, this is my favorite track on the release. Another favorite is Little Girl with Jen on lead vocal, it's snappy back beat and backing vocals by Labbe', Morrow and Caroline Carson Rau. Fouquet lays down some stinging riffs on lead guitar and the bottom is always solid with Smith and Crews. Wrapping the release is Step It Up with it's classic bass lead and Fouquet/Labbe' melody. Fouquet really gets this track working with strong lead guitar phrasing that really makes this track sing.

Blue Heart Records artist: Malaya Blue - Blue Credentials - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Blue Credentials, from Malaya Blue and it's a solid blues rocker. Opening with Your Act Has Worn Thin, Malaya up front on vocals leads this heavy bottomed hi stepper joined by Brett Lucas on lead guitar, Richard Cousins on bass, John McCullough on Hammond and Sam Kelly on drums. R&B flavored, I Can't Find No Love, has a real nice feel. Malaya hits a really nice slot and Lucas' lead guitar response is spot on. Soulful ballad, I'm Having Dreams Again, is my favorite track on the release and also the radio selection from my perspective. With it's solid melody and some of Malaya's best vocals on the release, coupled with some nice slide work by Lucas hits the spot. Funky Good Intentions, Bad Results is another strong entry with a great bass line by Cousins and some strong blues riffs by Lucas backing up Malaya. Blues rocker, Bring Me Your Sin has a terrific beat and Lucas really unloads both with some nice Dobro work and some flashy electric guitar work. Very nice. Howlin' Mercy has real grit with Malaya digging deep vocally over the Dobro work of Lucas. Real stuff! Wrapping the release is Messin' Around, with a laid back strut rhythm. Another track with a pop edge is another radio candidate and a solid closer.

Blue Heart Records artist: Laura Tate - Smokey Tango - New Release review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Smokey Tango, by Laura Tate and it's a bluesy pop oriented release with a lot of style. Opening with Aaron and Joel Neville's, Yellow Moon, and she slides right into the groove with her refined vocals, backed by Terry Wilson on bass and rhythm guitar, Richard Milsap on drums, Jeff Paris on piano and Billy Watts on lead guitar. Complimented nicely by Darrell Leonard on trumpet and Paulie Cerra on sax and perfect backing vocals by Teresa James, this is a strong opener. On Danny Everitt's I Heard A Rumor, Tate spins a love song into a Latin fused track with plenty of spice. With Wilson on Wurlitzer, Paris on piano and Watts on slide, this is another cool track. With sassy, blues infused vocals by Tate and New Orleans styling reinforced by Leonard on trumpet and cool piano by Watts, this track shows real versatility. Ernie K-Doe's A Certain Guy adds a great pop flavor ala R&B with piano lead by Paris and fun vocals by Tate. Wrapping the release is funky, Lover's Game led by Paris on B3, Wilson on Wurlitzer and really nice slide by Watts. Tate not only shows versatility but a sure footing on bluesy, funky vocals. Very nice.

Blue Heart Records artists: The Texas Horns - Everybody let's Roll - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Everybody Let's Roll, from The Texas Horns, and I really like it! Opening with title track, Everybody Let's Roll, The Texas Horns (Kaz Kazanoff on tenor sax, Al Gomez on trumpet, and John Mills on bari sax) come out steaming with Carolyn Wonderland on lead vocal, Mike Keller on rhythm guitar, Sean Giddings on keys, Chris Marsh on bass, and Tom Brechtlein on drums and featuring Anson Funderburgh with some real nice guitar lead. Solid opener. Piano boogie, I Ain't Mad With You, led by Matt Hubbard really rocks with excellent solos from Kaz and Johnny Moeller and a fat fat bottom by Mills. Excellent! A really interesting (bluesy) rework of The Beatles, I Want You (She's So Heavy), has great horn blending with Gomez taking the lead on trumpet. With it's jazzy drum hitch by Brannen Temple, a cool organ solo by Sean Geddings and a blast of blues by Moeller on guitar, this is a punchy track.  Soulful, Prisoner In Paradise, features Guy Forsyth on lead vocal and is the certain radio track with brassy backing and a real nice trumpet solo by Gomez and a warm sax solo by Kaz. Wrapping the release is JB Lenoir's J.B.s Rock with hot drumming by Jason Corbiere and sassy sax work by Kaz. Flanigin rolls in some warm organ tones and Jimmie Vaughan  lays down some trademark guitar riffs making this a great closer.

Blue Heart Records artist: Blues Called My Name - Anthony Geraci - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Blues Called My Name, by Anthony Geraci and its strong. Opening with That Old Pine Box which features Sugar Ray Norcia on lead vocal. A quick moving tempo and poised vocals by Norcia as well as super guitar work by Charlie O'Neal, Geraci on keys, Paul Loranger on bass and Jeff Armstrong on drums and this is a super opener. Boston Stomp is a super piano boogie featuring Geraci at the keys and with a great walking bass line by Loranger and Armstrong on drums this track moves. Slow blues, Corner Of Heartache And Pain features Erika Van Pelt on lead vocal. Solid work between Van Pelt on vocal and Geraci on piano and organ creates a really ice dialog and Geraci's bluesy piano solo caps this track nicely. Blues superstar, Walter Trout sits in on lead guitar on Into The Night and his feel and tone is immediately apparent. With his melodic lead, and Geraic's piano/organ solo work, this soulful track is easily my favorite on the release. With New Orleans flavor on Wading In The Vermillion, Geraci masterfully gets the theme going, joined by Loranger, Armstrong and Anne Harris on violin. Very cool. Wrapping the release is rag piano track, Song For Planet Earth which has a grea melody and excellent execution by Geraci. This is a strong closer for a solid release. Terrific cover by the way.

Blue Heart Records artist: Bobby Gentilo - Gentilo - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Gentilo, from Bobby Gentilo, and it's a solid blend of blues, rock, pop, soul and blues. Opening with Disease, a pop rocker this release is off to a good start with a great melody and rhythm along the lines of Eagles of Death Metal. With Bobby on lead vocal on vocal, bass, keys and guitar, and Jason Hoffheins on drums this is a cool opener. Soul soaked, Tell Me is another track with real commercial potential. Rich vocals by Bobby, B3 by Benjie Porecki, Hoffheins on drums, and Logan Kurtek on sax makes for one of those that sticks in your brain. Hoffheins lays down a snappy drum rhythm on Ghost and with Bobby on guitar and Porecki on keys, this track has the feel of an updated Hill Country blues. Very nice. Shifting gears, The Greatest, has a real R&B feel with smooth vocals and strong bass by Bobby and tight drum rhythms by Hoffheins. Slow blues, Treat Me So Mean is a nice track with blues roots. Bobby on guitar and vocal, supported by Porecki on keys makes for another solid entry.  My favorite track on the release is Tire Fire with a real Hill Country flavor. Featuring Tony Ryder on bass and Bobby on guitar this track really grinds in. Excellent. Wrapping the release is funky bottomed, Higher,  with Chris Engel on drums, Juan Guillermo Aguillar on percussion, Dale Wise on drums and Bobby on guitar and vocal. maintaining the basic stripped down Hill Country like rhythm, this is a strong closer for a solid release.

Blue Heart Records artist: Mike Guldin - Tumblin' - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release,  Tumblin', by Mike Guldin and it's a cool mix of blues boogie and country. Opening with title track, Tumblin', Mike Guldin on lead guitar, backed by Billy Ware on drums, CJ Clark on bass and with some great organ by Tim Hooper these guys are jammin. Taj Mahal's She Caught The Katy really sounds great with Guldin on lead vocal and guitar with Hooper on piano and organ, with a great bass line by Bill Sharrow and featuring some real nice slide by Bill Thatcher. Very nice. Two stepping, Raise a Ruckus is a cool country rocker and features James Pennebaker on slide guitar and Kevin McKendree on B3 and Tim Hooper on piano. Another country flavored rocker, You Just Can't Lose, has solid radio appeal with a stomping rhythm and a strong hook. With Guldin on lead vocal and guitar, backed by Sharrow on bass, Hooper on piano and Wear on drums, this is a strong track. Wrapping the release is Waterfall, a quiet instrumental featuring Guldin on acoustic guitar, Thatcher on acoustic guitar and Sharrow on bass. Solid closer for a cool release.

Blue Heart Records artist: Vaneese Thomas - Fight The Good Fight - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Fight The Good Fight, from Vaneese Thomas, and it's a great mix of R&B and soul. Opening with powerful track, Raise The Alarm, with it's hi stepping Al green styling really gets this release amped up. Thomas has a great voice and plays keys with Wayne Warnecke on drums and bass, Al Orlo on guitars, Jon Cobert on organ, Marc Frankiln on trumpet, Kirk Smothers on bari sax,  Lannie McMillan on tenor sax, and with Emily Bindiger and Kati Mac, this track is a home run. My radio choice for the release is Same Blood Same Bone, a soulful track with excellent lead by Thomas and beautiful backing vocals by Lisa Fisher, a hot guitar solo by Orlo and punchy horns. Very nice. Ballad, Time to Go Home has a gospel richness... Thomas' vocal over Orlo on acoustic guitar and mandolin and the addition of Joe Mennonna on Accordion. Wrapping the release is soulful ballad, Lost In The Wilderness. A strong showcase for the versatility of Thomas' voice and the inclusion of Scott Sharrard on pedal steel as well as lush backing vocals by James Williams and Thomas, this is an excellent closer.

Blue Heart Records artist: Kathy Murray & The Kilowatts - Fully Charged - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Fully Charged, from Kathy Murray & The Kilowatts and  its a cool current day blues rocker. Opening with Expense of Love based around an up tempo Sonny Boy Williamson riff, Kathy Murray leads the release off with supple, lead vocals in front of a band that sounds like it's chomping at the bit to run. With Michael DeSantis on bass, Richard Ross on drums, and Bill "Monster" Jones on guitar, solid opener. Rolling into a great blues track, My Mistake, Jones steps up with some hot riffs over DeSantis' bass line, and with the addition of the Texas Horns (Kaz Kazanoff on tenor sax, John Mills on bari sax, and Al Gomez on trumpet). Very nice! With a modified walking bass line driven by DeSantis, Henny Penny Blues is a cool change up mid disc with a nice exchange between Murray and Jones. With solid riffs and a snappy drum base by Ross, a solid addition. Pulling out Tampa Red's It Hurts Me Too, Jones slips on the slide and with Murry's vocal prowess, really delivers on this classic. Wrapping the release is Extra Nice with Murray sharing the vocal spotlight with Jones (who of course has lead guitar and adds accordion) over a cool bass line by Jeff Botta with Jason Corbiere on drums. Cool closer.

Blue Heart Records release: Blind Raccoon and NOLA BLUE Collection Vol. 4 - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Blind Raccoon and NOLA Blue Collection Vol. 4, and it's a solid mix of blues and rock tracks. Opening with blues rocker, Sorry, Mark Cameron shows solid vocals, slide guitar and harmonica carrying a radio worthy melody. Funky blues rocker, Devil in the Dark is a cool entry by Michele D' Amour & The Love Dealers. With strong organ support and cool guitar and sax solos,  this track has a laid back feel. Trudy Lynn covers a Bluesbusters' track, If Your Phone Don't Ring and with just the right strut, and blues attitude, this is one of my favorites on the release. Wily Bo Walker's I Want To Know has a real nice R&B feel with interwoven bass, guitar and keyboard backing under Walker's infectious lead and backing vocals. Very nice. Super shuffle, Back Door Woman Blues by the Waydown Wailers sets a nice pace with strong vocals and a cool piano/guitar exchange. David Gogo sets up a simple guitar shuffle on Never Gonna Change. His vocals are clean and his slide playing clean and tight. Slow blues vocals on Firebreather by Skylar Rogers stand tall on side one backed by crisp guitar soloing over a potent bottom. Straight up blues track, Hard Times Coming by David Rotundo Band features really nice vocal, slide and harmonica delivered straight. Very nice. Throwing a curveball is Dick Van Dyke, yes, 95 year old Dick Van Dyke singing Is You Or Is You Ain't My Baby. He really does a nice job, backed by a fully big band and a tight rhythm section. Very cool. Piano boogie, Party In The Room Next Door - Live In Calgary is a strong entry by David Vest with potent piano and guitar solos over a beefy walking bass line. Johnny Tucker shows his guitar sting on Do The Rufus, a funky blues with attitude. Backed by punchy horns, Tucker's vocals are great. Idaho Bound is a strong, Southern Rock style jam with all of the characteristics of the Allmans. Driving rhythm and bass, dual lead guitars, and tight drums make this entry by The Mary Jo Curry Band another standout. Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps perform Takes On To Know One with great vocals, punchy horns, heavy bass and Anson Funderburgh on guitar. Wrapping the release is  acoustic guitar driven, This Old Road, a nice ballad by Trevor B. Power. With nicely blended vocal mix and acoustic guitars, a solid closer for this 4th Collection Volume.

Blue Heart Records artist: Peter Veteska & Blues Train - So Far So Good - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, So Far So Good, from Peter Veteska & Blues Train and it's a solid mix of blues and rock. Opening with R&B fused rocker, one With Bad Luck, lead vocalist and on guitar Peter Veteska is joined by Alex D'Agnese on drums, Coo Moe Jhee on bass and Jeff Levine on B3. The addition of Gary Neuwirth on harmonica gives the track a cool texture and Veteska's guitar riffs really make the track pop. Shuffle, My One and Only Muse, is a cool track featuring Mikey Junior on harmonica. Veteska rolls out some real nice riffs and I particularly like his tone on the intro. Very cool. Slow blues, Low Down Dirty Blues really gives Veteska a great opportunity to show his soulful best vocals and over the warm B3 tones of Levine, his solid blues guitar chops. Rockin' East Coast Blues shows Slideman Boddy's slide work over a solid rockin rhythm lead by Veteska and punchy drums by D'Agnese. Very cool. Wrapping the release is soul infused, Can't We All Get Along. Nice vocal blending  with D'Agnese and Jhee this track has solid radio appeal making it a solid closer.

Blue Heart Records artist: Tony Holiday - Porch Sessions Volume 2 - New Release Review

I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Porch Sessions Volume 2, from Tony Holiday and it's a great Chicago style blues party. Opening with She's Tuff, Victor Wainwright and his rhythm section really get things rolling with Wainwright on vocal and piano and Holiday on harmonica. With plenty of attitude in presentation and this dynamic duo, this is a strong opener. Willie Buck has the mic on Honey Bee with Rusty Zinn on slide and Kim Wilson on harmonica. Zinn really conjurs Muddy's tone on guitar and Wilson's sound is fat and rich. Excellent! In more of a Delta styling on Recipe for Love Master, Bobby Rush on vocal and Vasti Jackson on guitar really make a great team serving up a heavy helping of blues. Very nice. Going to Court is a real hot number with James Harman on harmonica and Kid Ramos and Landon Stone laying down pure fire on guitar. Lurrie Bell teams up with harpmaster Mark Hummel on a shortened take on Everyday I Have The Blues but not without playing some blistering riffs. Ace guitar man Johnny Burgin and Holiday play Bad Bad Girl with Kid Andersen on bass. With it's 2 step rhythm, this track is a nice change up. Rae Gordon adds a lot of spice on lead vocals on shuffle,  Find Me When The Sun Goes Down complimented by Holiday on harmonica and backed by her own band. Ben Rice does a real nice job on That's How I Learned with his ultrasoulful vocals and deft acoustic steel resonator accompaniment. Very nice. Mark Hummel & Dennis Gruenling do a great duet on Cake Walk a terrific harmonica shuffle. One of my favorites on the release. JD Taylor on harmonica and vocal and his son Alex do a really nice on Family Tree with harmonica/ guitar backing of a great blues vocal. I particularly like the way Alex plucks his guitar accents. Excellent! Wrapping the release is the lush gospel fused Peace Will Come by Memphis based Southern Avenue. To say that this release is packed with goodies would be an understatement. Very strong release.
