Zac Harmon & The Drive - Live - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live , from Zac Harmon & The Drive and it's super! Opening with soulful, NTRO , Nate Robinson on bass and Gino Iglehart on drums set a solid foundation, with Corey Lacy building on keys and lush guitar work by Zac Harmon and Kingston Livingston really setting the bar. Terrific opener. Blue Pill Thrill has super movement and soulful vocals by Harmon. Lacy on keys works the rhythm with Robinson and Iglehart and Livingston and and Harmon play stinging riffs on guitar really giving this track some kick. Deep blues track, Feet Back On The Ground features Albert King like stinging riffs and super soulful vocals by Harmon. Keeping the music floor low allows Harmon plenty of space to go dynamically from soft to wow quickly adding real emotion to the track. Excellent! Boogie Down is a strong jam with a firm piano base by Lacy giving Harmon plenty of headroom for vocal corralling. Lacy lays in some real tasty keyboar...

Stony Plain Records artist: Sue Foley - One Guitar Woman - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, One Guitar Woman , from Sue Foley and it's an acoustic solo release in tribute to female pioneers of guitar. Opening with Elizabeth Cotten's Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie , Foley on vocal and guitar delivers this classic blues track with clarity and nicely articulating Cotten's classic guitar styling. Mother Maybelle Carter's, Lonesome Homesick Blues is a nice showcase for Foley vocally and her Davis like turnarounds work really nicely on this track. Spanish styling on Foley and Lydia Mendoza composed, Mal Hombre , is really tasty and Foley singing in both Spanish and English really suits this track. One of my favorites on the release. Classical composition, Romance In A Minor is a beautiful addition to this set. Composed by Niccolo Paganini, this track is all feel. Very nice. Sister Rosetta Thorpe song, My Journey To The Sky is a really soulful composition and Foley does it justice with clean vocals and a ...

Guitar Woman Records artist: Sue Foley - Live In Austin Vol. 1 - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Live In Austin Vol. 1 , from Sue Foley and it's an energetic blues rocker. Opening with New Used Car , a straight up rocker, Sue Foley is locked and loaded on guitar and with her adept vocals she has it going. Backed by Jon Penner on bass, Corey Keller on drums and  Derek O'Brien on guitar this is a potent opener. On Willie Dixon's Howlin For My Darlin , Foley shows plenty of swagger. I really like her guitar work on this one, working with O'Brien with just the right blend of blues feel and sting. Jodi Williams' Hooked On Love with it's Latin rhythm is really nicely done. Foley grinds out the lead with double stops and flair and Keller's drum work sets a great pace. This is a tasty track with tasty riffs. Excellent! Little Son Joe's, Me And My Chauffeur Blues , really is a nice showcase for Foley on vocals. Low slung, Better, shows plenty of vocal swagger, it's boogie theme, reinforced b...

Stony Plain Records artist: The Duke Robillard Band - They Called It Rhythm & Blues - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, They Called It Rhythm & Blues , by The Duke Robillard Band ,  and it's another stellar performance by the Duke and his crew. Opening with swing blues, Here I'm Is , Chris Cote on lead vocal really does a nice job with excellent fluid guitar lead by Robillard, and solid backing by Bruce Bears on keys, Marty Ballou on bass, Mark Teixeira on drums and Doug James on sax. Fools Are Getting Scarcer , James really does a great job stepping out on bari and tenor sax solos over a hot R&B feel. Excellent! Kim Wilson takes the lead on Tell Me Why with his trademark vocals and solid harmonica work. Robillard's guitar lead is impeccable and the band is solid. John Hammond is up front on Homeless Blues with his delta based vocal and playing style. I really like Hammond and am glad to see him on this release. With distinctive drum work by Teixeira and piano by Bears, this track is one of my favorites. Freddy King...

Stony Plain Records artist: Sue Foley - Pinky's Blues - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release (October 22, 2021), Pinky's Blues , from Sue Foley and I think it's her best yet! Opening with title track, Pinky's Blues, Foley digs in on guitar, establishing that this is a going to be a blues guitar release right up front. Her riffs are stinging and relentless. Angela Strehli's blues strut, Two Bit Texas Town has a great aggressive, Willie Dixon feel featuring Foley on vocal and with vicious SRV like riffs,  Jon Penner on bass, and Chris Layton on drums. One of my favorite tracks on the release is Southern Men and it's story telling format. Foley not only does a great job on vocal  but with bends and a lot of vibrato, really whammy's this track. Excellent! Another Strehli penned track, Say It's Not So really works nicely with rich vocals and double stopped rhythm work by Foley. Here soloing throughout is really nicely phrased and emotional. Excellent! Clarence Gatemouth Brown's Okie Dok...

VizzTone Label Group artist: Gabe Stillman - Just Say The Word - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, Just Say The Word, from Gabe Stillman and it's a solid blues release. Opening with slide exdplosion, Give Me Some Time , Gabe Stillman on guitar and vocal really gets it rockin. With Elmore James like flair, Stillman really ramps it up, backed by Colin Beatty on bass, Ray Hagen on drums, Taylor Streiff on B3 and the Texas Horns doing the rest. Excellent opener. R&B flavored, Let It Go , gives Stillman a chance to not only show his wares vocally but excellent guitar phrasing. No Time For Me has a lumbering pace and Stillman turns up the gain for a saturated tone on his guitar to grind over the full tone of Streiff's B3. This track has more rock but in the tone of a ZZ Top like jam. Very cool. Ballad, Heartbreak Makes A Sound , is a mellow, radio track, with solid vocals and guitar by Stillman, Streiff on piano and with a nice sax solo by Mark Kazanoff. Anson Funderburgh and Sue Foley take turns on shuffle, No ...

Stony Plain artist: Sue Foley - The Ice Queen - New Release Review

Image
I just had the opportunity to review the most recent release, The Ice Queen , from Sue Foley and I think it may be her best yet. Opening with Come To Me with Charlie Sexton joining on vocal and slide guitar, Foley adds a little funk to her already bluesy deal with Chris Maresh on bass, Chris Layton on drums and Kyle Thompson on maracas. Run has a country 2 step feel and Foley really drives this one with her ambitious guitar rhythm. Slow blues and title track, The Ice Queen , shows Foley at her purest with George rains on drums and Billy Horton on bass. Her riffs are right off a Hooker release and her vocals are simple and direct. Very nice. Shuffle track, The Lucky Ones features Jimmie Vaughan trading lead vocal and guitar riffs. With the addition of Mike Flanigin or organ, the track has an additional dimension and Foley's guitar riffs play nicely against Vaughan's. Billy Gibbons joins on Fool's Golds and his vocals really work great with Foley's. his solo work...

Chance of Rain - Peter Karp & Sue Foley

Image
Gifted singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist and American troubadour, Peter Karp, is a master songsmith with an art for spinning true-to-life emotions, humor, and candor. With an upbringing that was equal parts southern Alabama and the swamps of New Jersey, Karp¹s music is fueled bythe Yankee-Rebel juxtaposition. He first caught national attention with help from Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who recorded and toured with Karp on his first label release "The Turning Point." Karp further established himself on the national scene as a critically acclaimed songwriter, and accomplished guitarist and pianist with the release of his Blind Pig debut entitled "Shadows and Cracks." On the road across the U.S. and Canada, Karp repeatedly transfixes his live audiences. Critics compare his songwriting to John Hiatt and John Prine, with impressive guitar and slide licks infused by his love of Freddie King and Elmore James. Peter Karp personifies the amorphous Americana sou...

New Pinetop Perkins & Karp/Foley titles from Blind Pig!

Image
NEW RELEASES FROM BLIND PIG RECORDS! Noted roots music label Blind Pig Records will release new titles on April 17th by beloved blues piano icon Pinetop Perkins and the dynamic performing and songwriting duo of Peter Karp and Sue Foley. PINETOP PERKINS "HEAVEN" (AVAILABLE ON CD and LP) If there is a heaven - and God knows there ought to be for those blues musicians of The Delta who endured grievous deprivation and suffered countless indignities yet brought joy to so many - Pinetop Perkins is certainly there. It is unquestionably a little slice of heaven for us to hear Pinetop once again on this previously unreleased after-hours set of masterful music. The beloved dean of blues piano players and three time Grammy winner passed away last year, just four months shy of his 98 th birthday. Heaven captures a beautifully intimate 1986 studio performance by Pinetop when he was "only" seventy three, and still at the peak of his powe...

Blind Pig Records Artists: Peter Karp and Sue Foley - Beyond The Crossroads - New Release Review

Image
I just got a copy of the new recording, Beyond The Crossroads , by Peter Karp and Sue Foley . This is a happy go lucky blues cd with 12 self penned tracks that will likely see very broad interest. We're Gonna Make It is a blues themed song with Foley and Karp trading vocals over a strong melodic theme. Foley's vocals are particularly strong presented over the Swingadelic horn backed band. I also found particular enjoyment of Analyze'n Blues . Foley takes the lead on vocals again and there is a particularly cool saturated tube amp sound in the background that always gets me amped up. Karp takes a great resonator solo on this number that brings to mind old Little Feat and Lowell George. At The Same Time gets a little grittier and has a great trombone solo as a special treat. More Than I Bargained For is definitely the song that will hit the airwaves. It is strongly written and has a cool guitar hook. Resistance has a different flair with Foley using a talking type singing...
