I started a quest to find terrific blues music and incredible musicianship when I was just a little kid. I also have a tremendous appreciation of fine musical instruments and equipment. One of my greatest joys all of my life was sharing my finds with my friends. I'm now publishing my journey. I hope that you come along!

Earwig Music artists: Chris James and Patrick Rynn - Barrellhouse Stomp - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Barrelhouse Stomp , from Chris James and Patrick Rynn and it's a roller! Opening with contemporary Chicago style blues track, Goodbye, Later For You , in traditional fashion, Rynn and James open the release featuring super harp support from Rob Stone and piano work from Aaron Moore. James is always solid on vocals and he lays down nicely phrased riffs on guitar. Just Another Kick In The Teeth has a funky swing to it featuring Eddie Shaw on sax (as well as Jonny Viau, Norbert W Johnson) and Jody Williams on guitar. Viau opens I Feel So Good with a honkin good sax solo and James does a nice job of delivering on this classic blues track with contributions from Willie Big Eyes Smith (drums) and Aarom Moore on piano. Messin' With White Lightning has a spankin quick pace and Jody and James are on it with guitar riffs. Hot piano riffs from David Maxwell highlight this track and Willie Hayes is tight on drums. On slower paced swing track, Befo...

The Comeback Kid - Marina Rocks - New Release Review - Ellis James Guest Writer

Image
The cuts on Marina Rocks' latest release ‘The Comeback Kid’ are a wonderful mix of passionate, emphatically energetic vocals and skillful musicianship. Marina’s vocals remind me of the throatiness of Kim Carnes/Melissa Etheridge and the brass-in-pocket of a Lucinda Williams. This CD is one that continues to improve as it marches through the cuts. It would be easy for the first time listener to initially pigeon-hole this as a Country release-but would be mistaken to do so. Some reviewers in the music industry bemoan the demise of ‘real Country.’ This may be a release which is helping to redefine and save it. Fans of the Blues are encouraged to put their ears on and accept a rare treat. Do not expect a cliché’ rehash of Chicago, Texas or West Coast Blues. This is an opportunity to hear a refreshing difference. The first single ‘Stuck in the Mud’ is now playing in 13 Countries; Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, England, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark...

Ready Or Not - Jawbone

Image
Jawbone is a one-man blues/garage/punk band based in Detroit, Michigan. His self-released, basement-recorded 2004 album 'dang blues' was discovered by legendary BBC Radio 1 dj John Peel, who championed the cd on his national UK broadcast over a period of several weeks early in 2004. A visit to London soon followed in April 2004 for a series of club gigs and a live session for Mr. Peel at Maida Vale studios. Jawbone was signed to London-based Loose Music in July 2004. A Jawbone cover version of Johnny Cash's Sun Records classic 'Get Rhythm' was included in the October 2004 Mojo Magazine Johnny Cash tribute cd. The end of 2004 saw Jawbone return to the UK for another small tour, and 2 songs from 'dang blues' ending up in the top 20 of the annual Peel Festive 50 listener’s poll. 2005 included an appearance at SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas, gigs in and around Detroit, and another UK tour, which included a set in a special Peel Tribute concert at Que...

Ruf Records artist: Samantha Fish - Black Wind Howlin' - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Black Wind Howlin' , from Samantha Fish and it's a romper! Opening with hard driving Miles To Go , Fish rides a hard rain with fat slide work and solid vocals. Pushed by Charlie Wooton on bass and Yonrico Scott on drums this is a straight up slammer. Mike Zito joins on Kick Around , a country style track featuring stylistic riffs and a little duet action with Zito and Paul Thorn. Go To Hell has a lot of guitar grind and bottom with Scott really hammering it out. A very strong radio style rocker with plenty of rowdy riffs. Sucker Born features Jumpin Johnny Sansone on harp and some razor sharp slide work under Fish's strong vocal attack. Fish penned blues ballad, Over You , is a sure winner with a nice melody, sweet guitar riffs and euphoric backing instrumentals and vocals. (put your money on it) Who's Been Talking , again featuring the hot harp of Sansone is a smokin Chicago/Latin style blues track. The guitar riffs are understa...

Out Of The Past Music artist: Steve Howell & The Mighty Men - Yes, I Believe I Will - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release, Yes, I Believe I Will from Steve Howell and it is really hauntingly good. The release opens with I Had A Notion , a simple acoustic country rocker not unlike contemporary Eric Clapton on JJ Cale tracks. Walk On Boy is a cool track written by Mel Tillis and long covered by Doc Watson having a distinctive Hot Tuna/ Gary Davis sound. Very cool. Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning has long been one of my favorite acoustic blues with spiritual overtones. I was first introduced to this track on the first Hot Tuna release and it has always stuck with me. Howell, who plays most of the acoustic guitar on this release is joined by Chris Michaels on electric guitar on this track and he adds some really cool riffs that are almost unworldly in tone. Love it! Another real eerie sounding track, Country Blues originally written by Dock Boggs is performed here with a lot of authenticity and feeling. There is a real humble but warm feel conveyed by this type of ...

NEW BLUES RELEASES FROM BLIND PIG RECORDS! American roots music label Blind Pig Records returns to its traditional blues origins with the release of new titles from Shawn Holt and the Teardrops and Roosevelt Sykes. Shawn Holt & the Teardrops   "Daddy Told Me" Shawn Holt is the son of the late legendary blues master, Magic Slim. After twenty-four years and ten releases as Magic Slim's label, Blind Pig Records is very proud to announce the debut recording by Shawn Holt & the Teardrops, Daddy Told Me.  John Primer , a distinguised and long time member of the Teardrops, is a special guest. When the blues world mourned the passing of Magic Slim this past spring at a tribute at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago, Bill Dahl of the Chicago Blues Guide wrote, "'A Night For Magic' commenced in true torch-passing fashion with Slim's guitar-wielding son, Shawn Holt, leading a second-generation lineup of Teardrops that prove...

MONKEY ON MY BACK - "Sir" Oliver Mally & Frank Schwinn

Image
I need to make music like I need to breath. without music the world would be a depressing place to me. I have to do it, period The real truth I can only find in art. Because of this I can not play or produce music that is made for other reasons. Today there is the tendency to see art as a gourmet thing. Music has to fit to your dinner like wine, the new painting has to fit to the furniture of your living room.... that´s terrible for me, art has to be the sting in your flesh... I have to feel the shit, I don´t care if it´s perfect or played well, I have to feel the urge behind it. I need to feel freedom and anarchy, pain and protest, joy and humor, darkness and light.. Because of this I like Coltrane, Miles, Hendrix, Marley, Aphex Twin, Brötzmann, Fennesz, Plasticman, Can, Feist, Björk, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Einstürzende Neubauten, Sex Pistols, Thelonious Monk ....... "musicians" are boring, "artists" are inspiring to me   If you support live Blues acts, ...

Blind Pig Records artist: Shawn Holt & the Teardrops - Daddy Told Me - New Release Review

Image
I just received the newest release (September 24, 20130, Daddy Told Me , from Shawn Holt & the Teardrops and I really like it. A know that this is sacrilegious to say but I believe that it is the best Teardrops release in years. Opening with Buster Brown's Fannie Mae ,Holt, backed by Levi William on guitar, Chris Biedron on bass and Brian B.J. Jones on drums, does a great job or breathing fresh life into a blues standard. Guitar work is clean energetic and vocals are strong. On title track, Daddy Told Me , Holtsteps up as songwriter and lead vocalist with vocal style in the tradition of Morganfield. Grinding boogie track construction gives the band pure opportunity to groove and Holt delivers really nicely on vocals as well as guitar. Slow groove track, Hold You Again , is really a strong track with passionate vocals and stinging guitar riffs. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the release. Jimmy Reed's Down In Virginia , a loose shuffle, features Holt and ...

Spontobeat - Walter Tore

Image
I have traveled the highways of the world for the past 40 years. I resided in Austin, SF Bay Area, NYC, Brussels, Oslo, Ohio, Arizona, seeking the blues greats and places where my approach to music would be accepted. I have lived with Lousiana Red, and played and toured with many of the blues greats. I have lived the high life and the low life during this journey. The countless experiences I have had are being written to a book by Nigel Price, an author from England . I got tired of dealing with the struggles to keep at top band intact, and became a full time, 1 man band(bass drum, snare, high hat, guitar, piano, vocal, harp all played at once) about 10 years ago. I learned this from Wilbert "Kansas City" Harrison, in the 70's, back in Newark, NJ. Wilbert had the biggest 1 man band commercial hit to date with -Let's Work Together. This has allowed me to have that band sound behind me 24/7. All the songs you here have me playing everything at once, one take, no overd...
