If you’ve spent any time around the mid-Atlantic roots scene over the last forty years, you’ve likely crossed paths with J.P. Reali. He is the kind of picker who feels less like a performer on a stage and more like an old friend sharing a lifelong obsession from a front-porch rocking chair. For decades, Reali was a pillar of the Washington, D.C. blues circuit, collecting award nominations and heading down to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge, all while mastering the bouncy fingerpicking of Piedmont ragtime and the heavy slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta. Now based out of Newark, Delaware, his latest creative detour feels like his most personal one yet. On his new late-2026 EP, Grateful Blues, Reali revisits his college days at American University when he was a dedicated Deadhead catching as many Jerry Garcia shows as possible. Recorded up the road at Turtle Studios in Philadelphia, the record strips away the stadium-sized jams of the Dead and runs them through the smoky, raw lens of a late-night juke joint, making it a wonderfully loose, affectionate bridge between counterculture jam bands and pre-war acoustic blues.

The Deep Dive
JP Reali has reimagined a few key Dead tracks for his new release, Grateful Blues. Instead of chasing giant stadium sounds, J.P. splits the difference with producer Jim Larson (on drums), Monty Cullum (on bass), and Rich Budesa (on keys) to lock down a super tight, funky blues groove. It skips the trippy space jams completely and heads straight for that gritty, old-school vibe from the Dead’s early days when Pigpen was running the show.

Easy Wind is an easy rocker with chugging guitar rhythms under Reali's vocals. With Rich Budesa on keys, Month Cullum on bass and Jim Larson on drums a solid opener. Loose Lucy is one of my favorites on the release with a lumbering bluesy feel. Reali on vocal trades call and response with Budesa and Trina Meade on backing vocals. Reali takes his guitar for a walk on West LA Fadeaway with understated vocals and glistening keyboard work by Budesa. Wrapping the release is Tennessee Jed with slick, jangly guitar feel and stumble drum work making this an excellent closer
